My teenagers listen to some kind of music that I don't understand. They hang out upstairs in a large bedroom, where there are plenty of projects to do. My son, 16, is a writer. My daughter, 19, is an artist. They live in the real world, while I am sheltered and protected here at home. . . Yet, I worry about them. I worry about their choices and their troubles. When they want to do something, and I am concerned, they comfort me. They look at me with tender eyes, hug me, and smile as if to say, "Little Mother, sweet Mother, it is not for you to worry about. Everything is okay. I will handle this." .... I wear an old fashioned country apron and my hair is often all swept up off my face. I am always making something in the kitchen or reading a book in a chair near the hearth. They sit beside me and tell me about their troubles, or their dreams. I listen to their accomplishments. I am the first person they go to with their creative writing or art. I delight in their presence. Yet, I don't understand their generation. I don't understand the way they talk or dress or their interests. ..... But it isn't for me to understand. It is for me to be here, and to love them. In turn, there is a mutual respect and adoration. . . They are very protective of me. They are like bulldogs that protect the home and their "Little Mother."
There is always going to be a generation gap. Things will always change. We do not have to change with it.. . We housewives.. . We have to stand for our own generation and the old paths, like a living history to the young.

Driver's License for Women?
I really want to know what you all think about a woman having a driver's license. What I mean is, what if you don't want one? What if you don't want your own car and you just want to stay home?
I find myself going through a bit of a rough phase in life right now. I have two older children who need rides to work and such. Then I have a middle child who needs rides to classes (music, dance). We have no public transportation here and are in a rural area, but I do not like being taken away from home so often. It interrupts my peaceful spirit here at home and it tempts me to do a little shopping or buy quick meals instead of making them myself.
I know two people who don't have a license:
1. My sister-in-law. She walks or rides her bike for regular visits and such. She is in good health and good physical shape. She is a housewife with two older teen daughters. She lives near the beach and if she has anywhere else to go, her husband drives her, or does the errands on his way home from work.
2. My mother-in-law (who has recently passed away). She was home all the time. It was precious! That home was such a creative place to be. She didn't have to go anywhere.
Growing up, our family lived in a busy suburban neighborhood. I walked all over the place. We also had public transportation so we could travel on longer trips (like the mall) when we needed to. I also could take the bus to work or school (as a teenager) if I had to.
I understand that I have no choice at this time. We cannot walk where we have to go in this area. But I do long for the day when I can be home more. In the meantime, I bring a book or sewing project with me so I have something to do while I sit and wait through appointments or for the children's classes to be over and such. Sometimes, I even bring a notebook to plan goals, homemaking ideas and menus. I know this phase will pass, and I just have to find a way to make it a joy.
In the old days, it was an "event" to "go into town" and didn't happen very often. People had so many things to do at home and didn't venture away too far or too often. I know things are not the same and times change, but I would like things to be more of the ideal I crave.
I am really wondering if anyone else feels the way I do?
Blessings

Getting Into Homemaking
The last few days have been rough, (with my son being ill), but life is getting back to normal. The best thing for me is to get back into my homemaking. I am going to tidy up my kitchen, prepare a nice supper and just enjoy listening to some good old southern gospel music. It is raining here in Vermont. The landscape is beautiful as the sun hits the dark green grass out front. Our house is quiet. But life stirs inside as we go about our regular routine. All is well.
Here is a quote that I find inspiring:
" Upon three things the world stands:
The Torah (Scripture);
The Worship of God;
The bestowal of Lovingkindness." - Shimon the Righteous
The greatest thing a housewife can do is keep a pleasant disposition and make her home a peaceful and loving place to be, for all who gather there.

A Tough Night
I have been sitting here with tears in my eyes for the last hour or so. I was reading emails and visiting some blogs and just found so much comfort. I really needed it tonight. You see, My son (16) is having health problems. We are going to the hospital with him tomorrow for tests. He has been sick off and on for the last several months and we keep taking him to the doctor. But now he has gotten worse, so they are running all kinds of tests.
One of the things I am doing to distract myself, is finding these lovely quotes or passages with some pretty, soothing image. Then I copy them into a Microsoft word file and print out the page. I then take the page and staple it to some construction paper (to make a frame of sorts). Then I have been hanging these on my walls.
I have to hold my head up and smile with faith and trust in God. That everything will be okay. It is all in His hands. And it is important that my son and I are smiling and making jokes and being happy because that's what will get us through each day.

Dresses and Skirts
I was reading from other blogs and was a little surprised. I guess I just didn't realize that many women don't wear dresses and skirts all the time? And they seem to find it difficult? Very interesting....
Okay, so here are some adorable posts I found from some other blogs about this:
http://followingtheancientpaths.wordpress.com/2008/07/16/my-social-experiment/
And here is another one:
http://sahmissionary.blogspot.com/2009/05/challenge.html
And a third:

What do you all think about this? I absolutely love these posts. They are darling.
Do you all wear dresses or skirts all the time? Or do you find it difficult?
Blessings

Working in the Kitchen
Everyone in my house is worn out. I am letting them all rest. I will rest later. Right now I am making pizza dough for supper. I have terrible chest pains and shortness of breath, but I am slowing kneading that dough. I love the quiet in my kitchen and working to make a healthy, filling meal for my family. One of our daycare children has pneumonia. So we will probably all end up with something similar. We take care of two little sweethearts in our home. They are precious.
Tonight, as I am making our pizzas, I am remembering my Rachel. She is our oldest at 21. I remember all the cooking she did growing up and all the good food she made. I miss having her home. ...
Recently, she was in her own kitchen with her fiancee. She was looking through a large cookbook I bought for her and she was planning out their menus. She told her boyfriend she would make some homemade bread. He couldn't believe she knew how to do that. I was so happy that she still loved to cook and bake after all these years.
There is just something about working in the kitchen that makes home a precious memory......

TV Mothers
The last few nights, at the end of long days, I have sat cozily in my room and watched some DVD's. I've been watching early episodes of The Brady Bunch. I love that there are no commercials. Modern television is a nightmare (smiles)! DVD's are a great invention.
My three favorite TV Mothers are from the following programs: "The Donna Reed Show" ; "Little House on the Prairie" and "The Brady Bunch." What is interesting about the three of these programs is the tremendous glimpse you get into the history of housewives.
1. Mrs. Brady is home almost all the time and is always there for her children. She is neatly dressed and loving to her family. This is the way it should be in our homes today!
2. Donna Reed is always nicely dressed, has a cheerful disposition and is completely dedicated to her home and family. Again, this is the way it should be.
3. Mrs. Ingalls is an excellent wife and mother. You get the poorer, more religious perspective here and I love it.
There is no reason why we, today, cannot be as good, if not better, as housewives. Here is a little questionnaire:
1. Do you get dressed up each morning? (or: a. stay in your pajamas? or b. wear sweatpants?)
2. Do you enjoy cooking and cleaning?
3. Do you smile throughout the day?
4. Are you delighted when your husband and children come home?
5. Are you content at home?
6. Any other comments?
If you'd like to answer these questions, just copy and paste them into the comment section.

I Just Love it Here
This blog is precious to me. I have set up my favorite, spiritually nourishing resources and come here almost daily to enjoy them.
1. My playlist is full of godly music that really touches my heart and makes me almost cry. I just hit the play button and they all play over and over again, while I tidy up my room or do some other work.
2. The "featured sermon" at the bottom of the page is by Dr. John R. Rice and is on the Home. This precious saint (who being dead still speaketh), has such incredible, heart-changing wisdom. His voice is so sincere and conveys the fact that he is a dearly, beloved saint. He certainly is receiving many heavenly rewards for having lived a devoted godly live. Whenever I listen to him, it always "puts me back in my place!!"
3. I like to see the list of blogs that I check on to see who has posted recently.
4. I like that there are no frills or anything un-necessary. No clutter. I realize that I have no awards or community links or blog group/ clubs. I also realize that I may receive only a few visitors, but that is okay. This is just my quiet place where I can be refreshed and nourished.
Hope you enjoy it too.
I have to give you my sewing update: I cut out the pattern this afternoon and started sewing. While I was working on it, I had many ideas, thoughts about home and such. I will write an article about it in this coming weekly newsletter. (sign up for this free resource at the bottom of this blog)
Have a wonderful night!
Blessings

Sewing an Apron
I bought some lovely fabric this week, and a pretty apron pattern. I am planning to cut it all out and pin my pieces together. I enjoy doing all my sewing by hand. It is relaxing and I take the project along with me on car trips (errands and such), so I have something to do when I have to wait in the car.
Sadly, I haven't been doing any sewing for quite some time. The hard part is always getting the motivation to actually CUT the pieces and get them ready.
I want to do this tonight. I think I will turn on some nice classical music or some gospel music and listen to it while I work.
I will also make myself some nice tea.

Home: the Way it should Be

Buy at AllPosters.com
I found this lovely quote on a very precious blog:
"""""I am going to suggest that praising God through serving people is the only reason for domestic art...The American home is being pulled in two non-biblical ways. One is to become a mere refueling stop...The other non-biblical direction home environments have taken is to become shrines of materialism."""""..............Mary Pride, The Way Home
The link to this blog is: A Wise Woman Builds Her Home
This made me think of my grandmother's home. In her day, there were very few possessions.
Simple Furniture.... A very clean Home.... Simple living and the beauty of a calm environment, which had very little to distract one from the very basics of life.

Pause for the Soul
The house is quiet. It is night-time and dark. I had an unsettling feeling all day, and seemed to be pulled in many directions. Now it is time to pause. It is time to relax and nourish the soul. I am going to cuddle up in a warm bed with a nice book. Then I am going to read until I get so tired, that I fall asleep.
No matter what is going on around us in this life, we have to pause for the soul. We have to find refreshment and nourishment in spiritual things. . . . There is always going to be drama in our lives. People are always going to need us. And there are going to be problems. Yet, we have to just step away from it and rest, not just so we can survive it all........ but so we can face it again. . . . with joy. . . . and a peaceful soul.
goodnight,
Blessings
