Winter Homeschooling Plans

Christmas Glow

I am having a hard time getting my teenagers to start school with me in the mornings. I also have errands to run, almost daily. I realize I have to make a change. The best thing for us, at this time, is to have our lessons in the afternoon.

The children will still have their busy work - textbooks, reading, Math (comptuer or DVD) and worksheets. They can do these throughout the morning or early evening. This is independent work.

We will also do our morning Bible time. (Dear Lord, please burden me not to forget this!)

The Afternoon lessons with Me, for the entire winter season will include:

1. Institute for Excellence in Writing (A Review Item)

2. The Prairie Primer (A Review Item)

3. Latin's Not So Tough (A Review Item)

4. Spelling, McGuffey, Math Drills, Writing Assignment

5. Teaching Textbooks

6. Positive Action for Christ -Their High School Level Bible Study - (A Review Item)

I am looking forward to cozy afternoons at home. We will have a lovely view of snow from the window. The Prairie Primer requires us to read several of the Little House on The Prairie books. I can't wait! What fun! We will have a pleasant, relaxed pace of learning at home.

Blessings

We too are struggling to keep our work going. This time of year can bring such a relaxed feeling about it that all anyone wants to do is sit in front of the wood burner and read or sew. Not bad things, but it's not keeping up with our schedule as I would like.

Looks like you have some fun review items to work on!

If I could do it all over I would do what the Swann family did-all 10 children had their high school diplomas from American School Correspondence by 11 years old(book-No Regrets). The high school diploma took them 18 months. They homeschooled year round and took off weekends, New Years Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas etc.,-any day the father had off. They worked 8:30-11:30 and in the afternoon. I read an article in Readers Digest years ago about how it is difficult for teens to go to bed early and wake early. I saw that with all 6 of mine. My 4 sons liked Farmer Boy(set in NY) and my 2 daughters liked the first book of the Little House series the best. We weren't fans of the tv series.

It sounds like you have a great plan in motion! Congratulations! :)

I will be sure to check back to see how you like using the Prairie Primer, too. We had an opportunity a year or two back to review either that or Further Up, Further In on C. S. Lewis' Narnia books. It was a very difficult decision, but we opted for Narnia. Now I would like to have the Prairie Primer. :)

I am a 56 year old who LOVES the Little House books. I re-read them every year. I have worn out two sets and am on my third. I love the illustrations and the fact they were drawn with black crayon to give them that older, rustic feel.
I would have loved to live with the Ingalls family. My own was much different but when I read those books I feel like I am part of the family.

Enjoy.

I would like to hear about the Prairie Primer, sounds fascinating.

My favorite Little House book is Farmer Boy. I read that whenever I need a kick in the pants in the homemaking accountability department. ;-)
