October Snow in Vermont

When I woke up this morning, I saw snow all over the ground. I was so excited! The snow is still falling gently over the landscape. The sun has not entirely come up yet, so it is still a bit dark out. I took the above picture just a few minutes ago. It is part of our back property.

When it snows out, I am inspired to cook and bake. I want to read near the hearth and just stay home.  It  puts me in the best of moods.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Safe and Happy at Home

Tea Time

There are several things going on right now that are distracting me. It is hard to focus on just home. I was thinking about when I was a young mother with babies. I used to walk several miles to the house of my sister-in-law so we could visit. She had one child who was the same age as my oldest ( around 4 years old at the time). I would bring a radio flyer wagon with me so my two girls could ride or pull as they wished. Rachel was 4 and Nicole was 3. I was also expecting Matthew (who is now 17). Life was so simple in those days. I had my daily routine. We lived near the beach and it was just beautiful!

I would walk all those miles so the children could get plenty of exercise and fresh air. Then I would sit and have tea with my sister-in-law and we would talk for hours about homemaking while our children played. Then I would walk all the way back home. My girls loved the adventure. They would giggle and smile and chatter away.

By the time we got home, it would be late afternoon. They would play quietly while I made supper. We knew Dad would be home soon and we all wanted to rest and enjoy our time at home.

I love those old routines. Right now, I have to drive the children places and do errands. This just happens when you have teenagers and older children. I am teaching one to drive, and getting ready to teach another one to drive. There is always something we need to do that is not "home related."

It takes a tremendous amount of effort for me to push all those extra worries and activities out of my mind so I can create a home here. I love to clean and bake and cook and need to focus! I need to just shut the door, close the shades and make this precious home a happy place!

I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing weekend!

Upcoming Review

I have been given the opportunity to do another review for CSN stores. They have over 200 different stores with plenty of items to choose from.

I love their furniture selection. They have tea carts, dining room chairs, tables, and even fashionable bedroom sets. There is something to love in each of their stores!

I am not sure which item I will pick, but am very excited about it. Last time I received a pretty retro-red bread box and toaster, along with a few other items for my kitchen. I will have to browse around to see what I want this time.

Fit Mommy (Week 43)

The following is my check-in for Fit Mommy Friday. It is hosted by Denise. This is a way for many of us to encourage one another, to share our progress and to meet our own fitness goals. When you visit our blogs and read about our week, would you take a minute to share an encouraging comment?

~ This is the first check in for the 10 week challenge. ~

Here's my week:

Monday - 20 minute workout, target toning  - no weights.

Tuesday - 20 minute workout in the morning; 10 minutes at night.

Wednesday - 30 minute workout in the morning; 10 minutes at night.

Thursday - Rested.

Friday - I plan to do a 10 minute workout later tonight.

Last Friday night, John (13), Amy (15) and I were at a football game. When it was over, it was very dark and cold! We ran, 3 parking lots over, to get to my car. It was so cold, but it was so much fun! Of course, I was wearing my heels and skirt. (I hate regular shoes, and am much more comfortable in heels.) I remember seeing John smile. It was a good workout for all of us!

I also did lots of brisk walking anytime I had to go somewhere. I usually park my car at the far end of the lot so we can get some extra exercise and fresh air.

I have been eating healthy all week, but seem to have lost my appetite a few days ago. Not good - that is making me weak and tired. I am trying to eat more, but it's not going well. Hopefully I am just fighting an illness and it will get better in a few days.

I want to start using light weights again next week. I had to stop for several weeks because of an extended illness. I think I am ready to use them again.

Fitness Goal: To have strength and endurance. I do not have any weight to lose, but need to keep my energy levels high. ( I recovered from my soda and junk food addiction by week 37. It took 37 weeks!!!)

How was your week?

Blessings

Review - Buckets - O - Fun

TOS Crew Review

Product -  Packets of Yuck. (Science)

Company - Buckets - O - Fun

Buckets - O - Fun provides a variety of hands-on products such as finger rockets, water balloon launchers, silly swords and yuck.

I received 2 packages for review. 1. Snowy, Saucy and Chunky Yuck and 2. Sticky Yuck.

These are colorful packages with complete instructions for mixing and creating the Yuck. There is also a brochure with sections for the student to write down their observations as they  mix the yuck and begin working with it. The observations include: Color, texture, shape, smell and other.

There are pictures to help illustrate the instructions. You will also find a list of basic materials needed to complete the experiment. (You'll need things like water and a bowl.) There are also several suggested games you can play using the Yuck, and some nice Scientific explanations.

This product would be good for families who enjoy Science experiments. This is not something I would personally have chosen since we don't have a big interest in this kind of thing. But I know there are plenty of students who would greatly enjoy some Yuck!

Bible Treasure Box

Mountain Woods Recipe Box

Many housewives have index card file boxes they use to store treasured recipes. They look through this daily and consider it an essential tool for homemaking.  This same kind of box can be used for homeschoolers.

I came up with a fun idea and then ordered two boxes and two packages of index cards for my youngest children. I am going to introduce them to the Bible Treasure Box. Here is the plan:

There will be three divider cards. One for bible Verses.  One for Prayers.  One for Charity (Mitzvah - Jewish term for good deed or commandment.) -

1. Each day, the student will search the treasured Bible to find a special verse. This will be any verse the student wants. He will then carefully copy this down on an index card. He will then draw on it or decorate in some way. I will provide colored pencils, drawing pencils and crayons. Perhaps they will sketch tree branches, flowers or birds in the corner of the card?

2. The student will write out a prayer request or read over ones they've already written. They will then have private prayer time. They will be able to look over old cards and see which prayers have been answered and write them on the back of each card.

3. The charity section (Mitzvah) is for good deeds, commandments or donating money. They will write out one thing they did that day. Perhaps they helped someone without being told? Or maybe they gave some of their own money in the offering plate at church? Maybe they surprised grandpa by shoveling the snow off the front porch before he woke up? Just maybe, they told the truth at a time when a lie would have been so much easier.

Daily, I will say to my children the normal things:

1. Did you do your homework?
2. Did you do your chores?
3. Did you do your Treasure Box?

Soon it will become an essential routine and a precious part of their childhood.

I want them to get excited about this box which will contain important words, and prayers. I can just see my children sitting at the table with a Bible, searching for Treasure - finding just the right verse to write down for the day. I can see them decorating the card to make it look beautiful. I can imagine them looking through the prayer cards and closing their eyes and saying a short prayer.   I envision them getting excited about doing good deeds and coming up with ideas! They will look over past cards and have a sense of joy in their hearts!

The Treasure box will help teach them many lessons in the coming years. It will help discipline them to have daily religious duties.  This sounds so good. . . I think I will get one for myself as well!

Creating Home Life

Mother's Welcome

Home is a sanctuary for the family. It is the place where Mother teaches and guides her children to a beautiful, productive life. Each morning, she must come up with ideas and inspiration to create a home.

Boredom has no place in loveliness. Too much television, movies or even video games will distract and interfere with Mother's imagination. She needs to have a sharp mind to keep the family together and happy. She must be clever and full of ideas to keep the family motivated and heading in the right direction.

She can do this quite well at home. She can prepare herself each morning for the daily meals and housework. She can do the laundry, baking and cooking while smiling and chatting with her children. She can ask them ideas for re-arranging furniture, planning a special holiday meal, inviting guests, or preparing for a winter storm.

She might decide to have some fun family nights - with an Italy theme, complete with checkered tablecloth, Italian music and a delicious pasta dinner.

She might encourage the children to have cleaning contests - whoever has their room decorated and clean by 6 pm will win a prize!  Perhaps she has a few treasures, from the dollar store, hidden away for such occasions.

She might give the children a chance to create a menu and make a special supper, on their own, to surprise the family.

Or, she may just wake up, begin her day with joy and happiness that spreads throughout the home and makes everyone feel safe and secure.

Everyday, through sadness, depression, good times or bad - Mother has to create a home life. No one can do it for her.  This is her time of shining. It is her legacy. All the days of her life become the center of the family's history. It will be their childhood memory. What Kind of mother will you be? And what kind of home will you create?

Mother, what is your personality? What is your charm? What kind of culture are you joyfully transferring to your children?

Blessings

Review - PG Key

TOS Crew Review

Product - PG Key

Price - $49.99

Company Description:

"PG Key was created and endorsed by a team that includes internet security specialists, law enforcement, educators, parenting experts and family psychologists to give you the first complete internet safety solution. PG Key gives you everything you need to keep your children and teens safe online and be alerted and informed when dangers do come up – all with one simple, plug in device."

Featured in  Forbes, Women's World, MSNBC, and CNN.

My Thoughts

There are some great features with this product.

Time Lock - This controls whether or not the computer can be used.

Safe Search - This is an essential feature. When your child enters a "keyword" to look up, your computer is protected from harmful results or images. Safe Search blocks inappropriate results.

Alerts - Parents are sent an email message when your child doesn't follow the computer rules.  This will help you keep them protected and on-task.

Encryptor - If your child tries to disable PG Key or look for information online, this will be recorded for the parent to check up on later.

Session Recorder -  "Records up to 60 hours of computer activity." You, as the parent, can go back and view exactly what your child did on the computer.

This is such a great idea! I wish I had something like this when my older girls were younger! At this point, we do not need PG Key. We have two computers in the house- 1. Mine (which is in the main living area and no one is allowed to use. If they do, it is rare, and I am right beside them.) 2. The children's computer. This is not connected to the internet whatsoever.

The Early Morning Writing

Spanish Moss Draped Tree and Small House in Morning Mist

Years ago, I read the autobiography of Mary Higgins Clark. She was a widow with 5 small children, and a writer. She would get up every single day at 5 am and write for 2 hours, before her family was awake. Then she would stop for the day and take care of everyone. I have always been inspired by that.

Sometimes I worry that the sound of my typing will wake everyone up. I try so hard to be quiet. I love the silence and darkness in the early morning. I love to start a fresh new day with great plans and ideas. I want to clean and play games with the children. I want to be cheerful and happy and pleasant. I don't want to be rushed or hurried or pulled in all kinds of directions. I love the idea of being wide awake with a welcoming smile when the noises and stirrings of family begins to echo throughout the house.

Now is the perfect time to read the bible. I will have some hot tea and sit in my favorite chair. I will read and pray for awhile. It will bring me courage and strength and peace. I need that right now. I am a little shaky and flustered from the activities of the last few days. I need my morning quiet. I love my time for the early morning writing.

May your day be lovely and beautiful. May your heart be filled with peace and joy.

A Happy Autumn Homemaking Day

Forever Autumn

This morning, I could not get motivated to start my daily housework. John (13) and I finally went out for a walk to the post office. There was a crisp Autumn chill in the air. We wore our winter coats and walked through all the pretty fallen leaves. It was beautiful outside. When we got back home, I was ready to work! I wanted to get in a "holiday" mood, so I put on a pretty apron. I was already dressed in a skirt and heels. It was going to be a special day. When I am feeling lazy or tired or grumpy, I get extra dressed up in heels and it puts me in the right frame of mind for homemaking, and delighting in home tasks.

I spent the next couple of hours cleaning and organizing while listening to pleasant music by Bing Crosby and Dean Martin. I smiled as I drank ice cold water from a wine glass. The house was looking more pleasant by the moment!

By Lunch time, I was ready for a break. I was still washing dishes when Amy (15) walked in.  I told her I was tired. Sometimes when I start cleaning, I don't want to stop! She sent me to bed for a rest and said she would take over.

We had a lovely afternoon of errands. Now I am back home again. The fire is blazing in the wood stove. Everyone is quiet. We had an easy supper (Chinese food for Mr. White and Matthew; and Subway for the rest of us.)  Everything is still clean and neat. We are going to have a restful, happy night.

Blessings,
Mrs. White

The Eyeglass Saga

The following is a sponsored post:

Ever since Amy was 9 years old, she wanted to wear eyeglasses. She used to pretend to have blurred vision, difficulty reading and trouble doing schoolwork.

There were times I caught her wearing her sister, Nicole's, prescription glasses. I worried this would cause her to have headaches.

Finally, I decided to take her to see an optometrist. The doctor did a thorough exam and said she had perfect vision. Amy did not need glasses!

That was not the end of our family troubles. Last year, we waited until the last minute to fix Nicole's broken glasses. The problem was, she loved her current pair and couldn't find the exact frame to re-order. We ended up ordering a replacement pair of glasses online. It was a happy ending.

Mother's Health

Two Little Girls Help their Mother with the Laundry on Washday

In the old days, Mother had so much work to do at home, it helped her stay fit. She would churn the butter, knead bread dough (by hand), wash clothes outdoors, beat rugs, tend to animals, garden, and so much more.

The food she ate was often home grown and home cooked. Junk food and chemical preservatives did not enter the general marketplace until the 1950's. Even then, Mothers had to be convinced by advertisers that these foods had a place in her kitchen.

We need mothers to be healthy and strong. I have some suggestions that might help. There are two topics I will discuss. What we eat and how much we move. I hope you are able to glean some ideas that will work for you!

What We Eat

1. We are bombarded with temptation in the stores, in our homes and in advertisements, to eat as much as we want. The variety of temptations are astounding. Anything from donuts to chips to ice cream are available to us for impulse splurging. But snacks and treats used to be occasional or once a week!

One way to help curb this problem of overeating - set up a schedule. Here is an example:

8 am breakfast
Light serving of real oatmeal -not the sugary instant kind. Sliced Apple. Tea

10:30 am Carrot sticks and crackers

1:00 pm Lunch
Sandwich or soup or leftovers

3:00 pm Apple

6:00 pm Supper
Whatever the family meal consists of - such as meatloaf, potatoes, corn, etc.

That's it for the day. (Dessert once a week.)

If we are busy and active with housework, projects or errands, we will not have time to eat all day long. We will also look forward to our scheduled snack or meals.

Or, if eating too often makes you think about food too much, and you are not suffering from diabetes (where you need to maintain your blood sugar levels) eat only the three simple meals with no snacks. Just do whatever works for you. But do not eat all day long. Do not snack all day long. Your body needs a break. It cannot digest food all day because then it won't have time to rebuild your cells or heal.

Do not
eat until you get full. Only eat a portioned amount and then get busy with something else. Don't think about food all the time.

Remember this the next time you are tempted by a sweet treat - all you really need is one small bite - one taste. If you continue to eat and eat and eat that snack (getting seconds and thirds or fourths) you are going to cause damage to your body. All you really wanted is to taste it. Then go do something else.

Don't kill me for saying this...... But, one of my older daughters bought a t-shirt that says, "Please don't feed the models."  Honestly, models do not eat junk and snacks all the time. They are on strict food plans to maintain their health and that healthy glow in their faces. (I am not talking about the models who are suffering and have eating disorders, but the professionals who take excellent care of themselves because of their work.)

Drinking water -

Have you seen the common recommendation to drink 8 glasses of water a day? I have never heard of anyone successfully doing that. But I will say this - If you drink too much (even water)you are going to put a strain on your system. All things should be done in moderation. We should replace some of our normal drinks with water or sip on water when necessary. But drinking water all day long and forcing large amounts, is not good for us.

Moving More -

Many Mothers have serious health problems. Some have swollen legs, severe diabetes and other conditions that make it almost impossible to exercise normally. Here are some ideas to help:

1. Sit in a chair and do leg lifts, move your arms, and tighten your ab muscles. Do whatever you can while sitting in the chair. Increase reps as the weeks go on.

2. Make it a rule to park at the end of the parking lot so you have to walk *briskly* in all kinds of weather to get to a store. Even though this is difficult, it is an excellent and efficient way to build up endurance, strength and discipline.

3. Find a few times during the day when you are able to walk (even if it is just around the house). Walk briskly.

4. Do one or two extra household chores each day - like vacuuming or washing floors. Something that will  provide a good workout while cleaning.

What if you fail?

What if you eat way too much one day, or don't exercise at all? This reminds me of when we sin. It is going to happen!! We will have plenty of days when we eat junk or are "lazy." That is just part of our nature. But we will also have many good days! The point is to keep trying. Keep trying on an hourly basis. Never give up! Results will come for those who don't quit! It may take weeks or months or even years, but the goal is to have good health and that is worth putting in all the effort and suffering it requires!

What ideas can you add to this list? Have you found easy ways to exercise? What about tips for avoiding junk food or overeating? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Sometime today I will be posting a giveaway that relates to your health. I know you will love it. Stay tuned!

Entrusted with Arrows

Documentary - Entrusted with Arrows - Entrepreneurial Home School Fathers

Company - Movie Makers

Facebook Page - Entrusted with Arrows.

Description from the Publisher:

"Entrusted With Arrows highlights the efforts of a few Christian men who take extreme measures to directly train up their children in the way they should go. They do this by not only educating them at home, but by developing businesses which allow them to be with their children on a regular basis, living side by side with them, following the commands of Deuteronomy 6."

My Thoughts:

When I first heard about this documentary, I was extremely curious. I am always interested in godly families doing what they can to raise their children. I am even more interested in seeing how Fathers are able to start their own businesses and work with their children. I was able to watch an online preview of this movie. It was a little over an hour long. It held my attention from the very first moment.

The host, Greg Lammiman offered a compelling and convicting narration. He shared quotes, statistics and studies to seriously educate us. He also lead us through the interview clips of 5 Fathers, who shared about their work, families and blessings.

Here are the families in this movie:

1. Dale and Lisa Jost - (11 children)
They have a variety of income sources including: Woodworking, Raising Dogs and a Music Ministry. (I have actually seen some of their videos and heard their music. Do a search for the Jost family online. You'll love them!)

2. John and Kyrsten Brown - (3 children)
They operate a coffee business.  Their family is endearing! John says their children have always had Dad home and think it's normal!

3.  Greg and Bonnie Munger - (4 children)
They started a painting business, and now offer homeschool testing.  Their son Paul and his wife have 6 children, who are also homeschooled. I love their dedication!

4. Sam and Kathy Clemons - (8 children)
Sam runs a surveying business and keeps it small so he can spend plenty of time with his family. Sam's wisdom is enlightening and I loved seeing his wife and children, all working together.

5. Harold and Cindy Rushton - (2 children)
They run a Playground construction business. They offer great advice.

I loved "meeting" these Christian families and "visiting" their homes and lives. We get to hear from the Moms and see the children as well as listen to the advice and stories from the Dads. There is so much information here and you will be greatly inspired to make a change in your own life. Whether you are able to have Dad come home to work, or just find a way to spend more time to "Raise" these arrows we have been given, this video is an outstanding resource!

Review - The Thorn by Beverly Lewis

Book - The Thorn (1st book in The Rose Trilogy) by Beverly Lewis

Publisher - Bethany House

Description from the publisher:

"Lancaster County, with its rolling meadows and secret byways, may seem idyllic, but it is not without its thorns. The Rose Trilogy is the stirring saga of two Amish sisters, and the events and decisions that change their lives.
Spirited Rose Ann Kauffman has long enjoyed a close friendship with the bishop's rebellious foster son. Rose's older sister, Hen--who knows more than she should about falling for the wrong man--cautions her against him, but Rose is being courted by another, and so dismisses the warnings.

Hen Kauffman Orringer's impulsive marriage to an outsider divided her from the People, a decision she regrets now that she has a daughter of her own. As Hen struggles to reclaim aspects of Amish culture, her very modern husband pushes back, and the two soon come to an impasse. Can she find a way to reconcile her longing for the Old Ways with the life she has chosen?"

My Thoughts:

Bevery Lewis is a master storyteller. I have read several of her books and this one is the best she has ever written. Her seamless ability to change a "scene" from chapter to chapter amazed me. I was intrigued by this story and adored the characters. I loved stepping into the world of the Amish for a time and didn't want the book to end!

I saw some parallels between our Christian culture struggling with worldliness compared to The Amish families in this story, losing their children and interacting with the world around them. I was absolutely thrilled when the main character stood her ground time and again for what is right. Beverly provides plenty of godly wisdom through this story. I learned many things and was encouraged. I was entertained and educated. I highly recommend this book!

Winter and Fashion

The Wintry Road to Market

We had some snow here yesterday. It covered the rooftops, ground and cars. Throughout the day, we had light snow gently falling from the sky. It was beautiful!

Amy (15) put on her new winter coat for the first time. It is a soft, creamy white. We found it at Chadwicks. She looks so cute in it! It made her want to wear dressier clothes. She has some lovely fashionable items which are hand-me-downs from her older sisters.  Rachel (22) and Nicole (21) live and work near the city. They have access to all the best shops! They are able to find the most adorable clothes. Amy always benefits from this since she gets their cast-offs!

Amy and I also love to shop at J.C. Penney.  They have a comfortable sitting area in their dressing rooms. It is an elegant setting.

My favorite place of all has to be Marshalls or T.J. Maxx. We have to drive 2 hours to find these stores. I remember last year finding such pretty purses, matching shoes and a lovely long coat designed by Anne Klein.  Their prices are incredible and I always find some decorative item to bring back to make our home more inviting!

Very soon, Amy and I will have to head into the city for some winter shopping. We all need some new winter clothes and boots. Since we are in an extremely rural area, we rarely have an opportunity to shop in the nicer stores. We do our shopping once or twice a year which is a delightful treat. We will plan a fun excursion very soon. I can't wait!

Time for Homemaker to shop at the Market

Shoppers at Butcher Counter in A&P Grocery Store

It is time to head out to the market. I laid out the grocery ads and carefully planned my menu for the week. Then I made a list of all the ingredients I needed. I went through the pantry shelves, and checked off each item I already have on hand. My grocery list is fairly small, so I am happy.

I have to spend an enormous amount of time in the kitchen today. I need to clean, put away groceries and prepare a late supper.

I will also post an elegant menu on the wall near the kitchen. Everyone will be able to see what our "nightly" suppers will be. I want them to look forward to eating home cooked meals.

I also need to do some baking- fresh muffins and cookies and cake. These will be the snacks to fill in the gaps throughout the day. There will also be biscuits during the week.

I will buy oranges and grapes, and serve a little on the side of our supper plates on some nights.

In a little while, I will leave my cozy, warm home and head to the shops. I will select groceries to fill up my kitchen pantry. Then I will come home and dutifully, and happily get back to my homemaking.

Blessings,
Mrs. White

Fit Mommy (Week 42)

The following is my check-in for Fit Mommy Friday. It is hosted by Denise. This is a way for many of us to encourage one another, to share our progress and to meet our own fitness goals. When you visit our blogs and read about our week, would you take a minute to share an encouraging comment?

My last check in was for week 39.  I did exercise during the last couple of weeks, but not as much as I should have.  I started working with Nana (who, along with Grandpa, lives with us). Her health is frail and I wanted to encourage her to eat healthier and find some way of exercising each day.  We are working on a plan to help her get well for 2011.

Here is my current check -in:

Monday - Rested.

Tuesday - 20 Minute workout - no weights.

Wednesday - 10 Minute workout in the morning. Then another 10 minutes at night. This was target toning - no weights.

Thursday - 15 Minute workout in the morning. Then another 10 minutes at night. This was target toning - no weights.

Friday - (today). I plan to workout for at least 10 minutes.

Fitness Goal: To have strength and endurance. I do not have any weight to lose, but need to keep my energy levels high.

FIT MOMMY NEWS -

Denise, our hostess, and I have come up with a plan to help motivate our Fit Mommy group. Whether you have joined us once or twice in 2010 or want to join us now, I created a 10 week document to help you get fit between now and December 31st. We will be offering a reward (prize) to be announced later. Please join us!

Please download the free  "Fit Mommy 10 Week Program 2010" document. It is a daily checklist to help keep you on track. It is 28 pages long and runs from Monday, October 25th through Friday, December 31st.

Blessings,
Mrs. White

Acting Happy to Cheer Up

Bouquet of Roses

As I was working in my kitchen yesterday, one of my moods came on. (smiles) It was a somber, sad mood. Those things happen from time-to-time for no apparent reason. It is not pleasant. I tried everything I could think of to cheer up. I didn't want to alarm the family. I didn't want the children to see me sad. I knew if they were laughing and happy, it would gladden my heart. So I turned on some Christmas music and it helped tremendously.

Sometimes we just have to act happy, and wait for the feeling or emotion to follow.  I cannot tell you how many times I've smiled, with a joyous glow in my eyes, and a warm remark to a child or stranger, despite some misery in my soul.  It is not that I hide the occasional pain. It is more like pushing it away and refusing to let it overcome me.  I cannot dwell on sadness.

Today, it is time to focus on spreading rainbows and happy thoughts.  I will do a little housekeeping this morning. I will do some baking. I will listen to Christmas music and get dressed up. Then I will spend the day playing games with the children and reading them stories. I will be enchanted by whatever delights them!

It will be a lovely day!

The Pathway Home

The Path Home

~ The happiest place to go. . . is home ~

It is the lunch hour... Food is cooking on the stove. We are getting ready to enjoy a quiet afternoon. Later, we will rush around to do errands. . . and work. . . and deal with normal daily trials.

But, just for now, we will have a pleasant rest.

My children are calling and I must go. . .

The Perfect Day for Chores

Sunny Days

It is a sunny day and everyone is home. There are no errands, or work outside the home for the guys. It is a perfect day for chores!

I will go through my list from "A Beautiful - Clean -House in Just 30 Days" and check off as many items as I can. The children and I will divide some of these up. There is no way we can get it all accomplished, but it will be fun to do several of the items on the list. I think I will print out an extra copy of this so we can cross things off!

Next, we will take an afternoon break to spend time outdoors. I might even sit on the porch and read for a bit.  Once we get most of the work finished, I will bake some delicious cookies. Then I will head out to my porch and ring the supper bell! We have this lovely antique bell attached to the side of the house. It is so loud, even the neighbors can hear it. Sometimes, after I ring the bell to call the children, I can hear one of the neighbors call out "Supper time!"

Yesterday, I bought some beautiful glassware and bowls from the dollar store. They are elegant! I bought 12 glasses and 6 bowls. They will look so pretty when I set the table. There will be a glow and warmth from the light of our wood stove. It will make the end of our work day, just lovely!

Blessings

Animal Throw Pillow for Children

Product - Animal Pillow (Bear)

Company - ThrowPillows.org

I was offered a special throw pillow. I had no idea when it would arrive. On one of our errand days, we stopped at the post office before heading into town. There was a large box just for us! Amy (15) immediately got into the front passenger seat and opened it up to find a cute blue bear. She was so excited!

It lays flat, but you can Velcro the bottom part so it turns into a "stuffed bear!" Amy thought it was adorable and I let her keep it.

She named it "Romeo the Cuddle Bear." I will quote her - (smiles) - "He's a bear and a pillow. . to snuggle!"

Doesn't she look cute with Romeo?

ThrowPillows.org offers a variety of pillows. The animal throws are not yet available on the site, but are an example of the many pillows you can choose from.

These are designed for ages 3 and up. They are perfect for small children and teens as well!

Encouraging you to do Family Worship

The Whole Household, Including the Maidservants, Gather for Bible Reading and Prayer

The last few nights, our family Bible time has been extra special.  One night, after we finished, and started to get some housework done, I noticed John (13) still sitting at the table, with his Bible open. He was reading it with this peaceful look on his face. I smiled and said, "Are you reading the Bible for fun?"  He just looked up at me with a nod and then went back to reading.

Last night, even though we had been on the road for almost the entire day, we settled down for Family Worship. John and I sat at the table together for a short version of our normal routine (prayer, reading, hymn, more prayer.)  Amy (15) was nearby. Then, out of nowhere, Matthew walked into the room. (I forgot to call everyone to the table.) He came over to me, and offered to read one verse. He looked over my shoulder, at my Bible, and read for us. I was so proud of him. He is 17 and is rarely home during Family Worship. I was grateful he came over without my asking!

So this time, when I recorded the names in my Record Book, I was able to add Matt's name, even if he was only present for one verse.

I want to encourage you to do Family Worship at home. It is an essential religious duty.  Even if it is only you and one or two of your children. Whoever you are able to call around the Family Bible each day, just start some sort of routine. It can be short - 5 minutes, to longer - 30 minutes, depending on what you are able to do. It is such a blessing!  If you have older teens, who may not be able to participate, believe me, they will watch from afar. They notice and they will see the source of your faith!  What about Dad? If Dad is leading your Family worship, that is wonderful! In many cases, this is not possible. Perhaps he works all the time, or maybe he is not willing or able to participate. Then it is left to the Mother. It should not be left undone. Susanna Wesley is a perfect example of this. She was the mother of 19 children (including John Wesley). Her husband was often away from home. She made sure to have daily Bible reading and prayer with her children.

Blessings,
Mrs. White
