The Homeschool Mother's Journal

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

.

In my life this week…

I've been helping Matthew (18) upgrade his computer system. I spent several hours on it yesterday.  He is a musician and uses it to produce his work.

I actually let Amy (16) choose her own stack of library books without a comment from me. (smiles) I really don't like modern, secular books - some of them are full of trash. But I have to let her decide good literature for herself. So far, she is making good decisions.

In our homeschool this week…

I am seeing great progress in John's (13) reading and writing skills. (He is dyslexic.) We have been working steadily through the McGuffey readers. He is also writing sentences and letters. I am also amazed at his progress in Math, since we switched to Saxon.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We are going to youth group this week. There are plenty of teenagers there who are very dedicated to the Lord.  We are also going to make several trips to the library.

My favorite thing this week was…

Watching John (13) at his karate class. There are so many great people there and he is learning so much.  We also got a couple of sodas from the vending machine there, which is something we never do. It was exciting!

What’s working/not working for us…

I am starting school at 9:30 am. We work until noon and then take a lunch break. The rest of the day, we read, spend time outside, and then finish up any homework throughout the afternoon.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

For those who have a dyslexic student, do you see hope of your child ever reading and writing on a college level?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

John playing basketball at a church event. (He is in the front on the right.)

This is the first time I participated in this journal. I have been trying to find a quick way to share about our homeschool for a long time. I think this will work perfectly.  I have homeschooled my five children for 20 years. My oldest two, 23 and 21 graduated long ago. One has finished college, the other is finishing up college.

My son is not dyslexic, but his Aspergers/Tourettes make him struggle with writing. It is so hard to watch him get frustrated and not be able to either fix it or just say, "Never mind, let's not do that."

Hi Mrs. White!

To answer your last question, YES! You can hope to see your dyslexic son read/write...and make it in college! My Bryan is, as I always say, "wonderfully and WILDLY dyslexic!" He often says, "English is my second language, pictures are my first!" Step one is to have a deep understanding of the dyslexic pathways; step two is to learn how to work with those pathways and how to open new connections; step three is to decide what kind of college you're looking into...community college? University? Private college?...and then to contact them (I'd say no later than the junior year of high school, if possible) and ask them about "accomodations" for your dyslexic student.

Two people really opened my eyes to the dyslexic world: Ron Davis (author of "The Gift of Dyslexia") and Dianne Craft (I met her at our state's annual homeschool convention...she helped us the most in terms of learning to teach a dyslexic). If you visit my blog (link below) and look on my sidebar, you'll see some links for understanding dyslexia...both of these folks are linked there. Oh, btw, this isn't my "Serenity in the Suburbs" blog...it's my sister blog, "Plans4You" which is the homeschool info blog... http://illinoislorihshstips.blogspot.com

I'll be happy to email you more info, or answer any Q's, if you like. Let me know in a comment, or on my blog, and I'll email you.

Blessings,
IllinoisLori

Mrs. White~there are loads of very successful ppl with dyslexia. Good news is that b/c they aren't wired in the traditional sense, they are wonderfully creative and often gifted~My hub is a creative genius who can't spell his own name the same way twice who graduated with honors in college and well..won't keep braggn' LOL...but helping your child SEE HIS GIFTS and not so much focus on his weaknesses is key~INSPIRE him to go! Lori is right that modifications can be made in university work but these also come with testing and all the hoops that entails~ALL THE BEST to you and John~YOU GO GIRL! HUGS!~;-))
