Cooking for Mister

Library of Congress: 1942, Almoney family making Sunday Dinner, in Pennsylvania

I have this old 1963 cookbook published by Better Homes and Gardens.* It has a section in the front called, "Meals Men Like." The introduction says:

"Fix any of these delicious meals for your man and you'll be the 'Best Cook' he knows."

A sample menu:

"Stew Supper Supreme"

Old-time Beef Stew
Crisp Cabbage Slaw
Bread      Butter
Apple Betty Pie
Coffee      Cream and Sugar

The directions suggest serving the pie with vanilla ice cream! The description for the stew says it will serve "6 to 8 hungry folks" and a "go-with" would include "thick slices of bread."

It sounds like a delicious meal! Sometimes, when we create a little menu, it makes the experience extra special.

How many housewives today are making a real old fashioned supper for their husbands? How many of us dress up nicely for when he comes home from work, and make his environment peaceful? Certainly it is difficult when we have small children, but even if we did some of our cooking early in the day we could heat it up in the evening.

Cooking for Mister. . .  When a wife makes pleasant, home cooked meals and serves them cheerfully, that man will be eager to leave work and head back to his family. It's like he has his own little restaurant, at the greatest place on earth - HOME!

Blessings
Mrs. White

Great advice! My husband loves and appreciates my cooking ~ even if it's an easy crockpot meal. Feeding him {and the children} well makes me feel as though I've done the day's work to the best of my ability.

Feeding your husband right is so important, I wish more wives realized this! I was chatting with an acquaintance the other day and mentioned how much lower my grocery bill is when DH is out of town on business. He travels for weeks at a time. She didn't understand, so I explained that my husband is a meat-eater and lots of his favorite foods are costly (I wasn't complaining; just stating a fact). She looked at me curiously and said "You mean you plan your meals around what your husband likes?? I don't even KNOW what my husband likes!"

I agree and I just wrote about this. Last night, I made my husbands favorite meal, and afterward he walked outside and came back in and gave me a rose for making a delicious meal.

I LOVE this post!! So true! I admit that I tend to want to make what I like . . . .

Of course, I do make my husband's favorites too!

The other problem is when families run to sports practices and games during the dinner hour. At times we have been caught up in that. However, that is when the crock pot comes to the rescue!

thanks for the encouragement to serve our husbands and make our homes peaceful and delightful!!!

So good to see you back, Mrs. White! I agree...it's so easy to get wrapped up in the stresses of our day, and to forget that dh has had many stresses of his own. A clean home (or at least a clean kitchen and eating area!) makes all the difference in the world to our men!

Blessings,
Lori

Mrs. White, Could you please share which cookbook that is? I just love old cookbooks. Homey and no weird (expensive) ingredients. Thanks, Angela

Hello, Mrs. White! I haven't visited in a while, but I have always enjoyed what I read when I had the moment to stop by. today, I 'followed you' and would love it if you could stop by sometime, too. I desire to get to know my fellow believing bloggers better. do you really live in a wonderful older home? Oh, that's heaven! Is purple your favorite color? I, too, like to clean and sometimes my family gets sideways with it, but I find that if I do it with joy that is all so much better!!!
Thank you for sharing this part of your life with us all!

I *adore* making a meal that brings joy to my Husband. LOVE LOVE LOVE it, actually. And, I am also doing my best to remember to "freshen up" before he arrives home as well. I certainly don't want to look at a harried me at the end of a day!
