A Happy Homeschooling Day

An Apple for Minnie

We are going to have a wonderful homeschooling day! I have new books for the children to work with. I am also going to write lovely educational things all over our chalkboards. We will do some reading and writing and lots of math.

I need to plan a special lunch. I will make it look like we are at a restaurant. I think I will bake some chocolate chip muffins for a delightful treat. I can just imagine the children studying at the table and waiting for those muffins to finish baking!

I will have the children get dressed up so they feel like they are attending a private school. It will be fun. We can all get extra dressed up once in a while. It helps motivate and keep things interesting.

While the children are busy with school projects, I will putter about the house cleaning, doing laundry, doing dishes and baking. Then I will take breaks to help them with their work. Since my children are 13 and 16, they do much of their work independently. This leaves me the opportunity to get plenty of housework done while they are studying.

I do have to tell you that Amy (16) forgot to do her chores last night. (shudder). She was supposed to clean the kitchen but she left quite a mess for me.  Normally I would be annoyed.  But lately I am realizing how quickly they grow up. I am just grateful for children still at home that I get to clean up after. My husband will often say to me, "honey, you're the housewife. It's your job." (smiles). He is right. And yes, the children still need to do chores, but the majority of tasks are taken care of by me. It is a ministry and a blessing to be able to serve and care for everyone here at home.

What are your plans for today?

Blessings
Mrs. White

Winter Morning at Home

Plenty of Wood

Our house is extra cold today. Isn't that a lovely thought? I will exercise in a few minutes to warm up and get some energy, then I will delight in my home duties. We have so many things to do today and I want to be sharp and capable.

I soaked some red kidney beans last night. I will make homemade chili today. It is Matthew's favorite. He is 18 years old. When he comes home from work tonight, there will be a nice hot supper for him. I keep asking him what he would like with the chili, but he doesn't want anything. What do you normally serve with chili?

I am thinking about baking some homemade bread next week. I haven't made fresh bread in a long time. I think I will make a white loaf.  What is your favorite bread to make? Do you have an easy recipe to share?

I better get to my exercises before I lose any more time! Hope you have a wonderful day!

Review - A Math Program by Ten Marks

TOS Crew Review

Product - Ten Marks (online math subscription)

Grade Level - 3 to High School

Price - $10 per month

I love math programs. I was thrilled to test this one out. I had Amy (16) and John (13) get right to work. Here is how the program works:

The Student is given 2 worksheets every week to accomplish. Each worksheet has 10 questions.  Next to each problem, the student is provided with 2 forms of  help.

1. A Question mark icon provides up to 3 hints.

2. A video icon, provides a video lesson.

The parent is sent an email to remind the students about the worksheets the student needs to do, along with a date for them to be completed. This is great if you need that extra pressure, or boost, to get things accomplished. I liked it at first, then kind of thought I was being nagged. (smiles) But really, I did appreciate the reminder.

John seemed to have trouble with this program. He needed my help to get through most of the questions. That is a negative for me. I was hoping the worksheets would be more like practice for him, not difficult concepts he did not yet grasp. But we can work on this over time and I am sure it will get better.

Amy loved how quickly she was able to do her questions and be done!  I love that there are only short assignments and the children can feel a sense of accomplishment.

Overall, I think it is a good resource and would make a nice supplement to any math curriculum. We intend to continue with the program.

Fit Mommy (Year 2 Week 4)

The following is my check-in for Fit Mommy Friday. It is hosted by Denise. This is a way for many of us to encourage one another, to share our progress and to meet our own fitness goals. When you visit our blogs and read about our week, would you take a minute to share an encouraging comment?

Here's My week:

Sunday -
Early Morning - 30 minute Cardio DVD

Monday -
Early Morning - 30 minute workout DVD

Tuesday -
Early Morning - 30 minute Cardio - but halfway through I started to feel like I couldn't do it. I managed but  by late afternoon, I was very weak and tired.  [I realize now it was because I was in the living room and the wood stove was making the room much too hot. Lesson - don't exercise near the wood stove.]

Wednesday - Rested, even though it was a scheduled workout day.

Thursday -
I planned to exercise, was feeling fine, but forgot.

Friday -
I woke up late, but will exercise for 30 minutes before everyone wakes up.

How was your week?

Happy at Home

Demunn House

Last night, I finished up my housework and went to church. I was blessed beyond measure. The meeting was inspiring and educational. The children and I came home renewed with a gentle revival in our hearts.

When we got home, my dear Mr. White allowed me to watch several episodes of The Donna Reed Show (from Season 2 on DVD). I had the best time! What a fun, productive night!

I woke up this morning refreshed and happy. I had every intention of putting on my heels and pearls while I worked at keeping the home. But I forgot all about them and read a lovely book instead!

Later in the day, I polished the rooms and made them look inviting. Then I sat with my favorite cookbook for creative ideas. Did you know that The Old Betty Crocker Cookbook (from the 1950's) had many darling introductions to their recipes? One cute one, on page 385, under the "Holiday Spaghetti," says - From a famous movie star whose wife often serves it at their informal supper parties. How cute is that? (smiles)

On page 383, under "Monday Macaroni," it charmingly says - Sunday leftovers in an easy and delicious dish for Monday's dinner.

It all just made me want to work that much harder coming up with creative suppers for my family. I think I will do that this coming week. I would love to use several of these fun recipes. They are economical and delightful.

Well, I am off to have a little hot chocolate and get back to my reading near the fire. I hope you have a pleasant evening at home.

Blessings
Mrs. White

Boiron USA - Natural Cold Medicine Giveaway

Boiron USA sent me a value pack of cold medicine. This included:

1. Chestal Honey (Cough Syrup).

2. Coldcalm (Quick dissolving cold tablets)

3. Oscillococciunum (Flu)

Each product does not cause drowsiness and has no drug interactions. Natural cold remedies should be used to catch the sickness before it takes root in the body. At the first sign of sickness, one should immediately begin taking the cold medicine.

How it worked for me:

I received this product several weeks ago. I was waiting to get sick. (smiles) Finally, I had a minor sore throat. I started using the "Coldcalm" tablets. These have no real taste. The tablets dissolve easily within a matter of seconds, so there is no need to worry about swallowing a heavy pill. I faithfully watched the clock and took the pills in 15 minute intervals for 2 hours and then continued with the remedy for the rest of the morning.  Thankfully, my sore throat did not get any worse. My 16 year old daughter had just gotten over strep throat so I had been worried I would catch it from her. However, my throat got a little better but did not entirely improve for a few days. I had no real discomfort and am happy to report no ill effects from the medicine.

The Giveaway:

How would you like to win This same value pack of three medicines that I received? All you have to do is leave me a comment telling me your favorite home remedies for winter sickness.

Going to Meeting

The capable housewives from the 1930's and 1940's would have all their housework  and baking finished and they would go to "meeting." These dear ladies went to the old revival meetings at church. They went to the church picnics and church services.

These ladies would not even consider staying home with an excuse like, "I don't feel good," or "I won't have time to make supper." I am inspired by their legacy as I am getting ready to go to a church event tonight despite feeling tired and weary. At this moment, is my house clean enough? Is the supper made? Have I done the laundry? Well, since I have been ill since yesterday afternoon, I haven't done much more than direct the children to do the basic necessities. I am trying not to give in to the urge of crying since I cannot overexert myself with my regular chores. But will I give up and stay home tonight, or will I go to meeting?  Clearly, I will hold my head up and attend church tonight with my family. I will pray for strength and I will try to get a little bit of work done before I leave. I will not be a slacker housewife! I will not complain and wish my children did more or that I had a maid.

I remember my southern Aunt. She was the wife of a preacher. My Uncle had a wonderful church in rural Alabama. I remember staying at their house and seeing how much work she did at home. She baked food from scratch, gardened, cleaned her house, entertained us with her her charming southern conversations and went to all the church meetings with us. She would wear regular clothes at home, then get all dressed up for church . . .  Just like the wives and mothers from the 1930's and 1940's! She was a real-life example to me.

What about you? Are you going to church as much as you can? Are you keeping up with your home duties and running your house like you should? What advice can you share to keep things going even when you are weary?

Blessings
Mrs. White

Illustrated Bible Dictionary for Kids

TOS Crew Review

Lifeway Christian Stores presents:

Hardcover Book - Illustrated Bible Dictionary for Kids

Publisher - B and H Publishing Group

Price - $14.99

This is a large, colorful encyclopedia-type book. It contains 750 Bible terms and uses the KJV. The introduction describes it as a reference tool for children. There are over 200 pages. Here is some of what you'll find inside:

1. The Apostles - you'll see small paintings of each of the 12 men to give children an idea of what they may have looked like. Beside each figure is their name and a brief description of who they were and what they are known for. (Such as Thomas who doubted and Judas who betrayed Jesus.)

2. Isaac -The promised child born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. There is a beautiful painting of the elderly couple, with white hair, smiling and looking at the baby. It makes you realize how old they were when he was born!

3. Full color maps and paintings which are very vivid. (I did not see any graphic pictures, which I was thankful for!)

4. Words and definitions of such things as: Glory; Godliness; Ivory; Cymbals; Patriarch; and Rainbow.

5. Charts for subjects like - "The Jewish feasts" and "Weights and Measures."  Both charts are fascinating and really help the reader understand Biblical terms relating to these items.

6. Note -There were a few short passages which came from an opinion standpoint - such as The Christian Sabbath vs. The Jewish Sabbath, but parents can use this to open up discussions. There were only a few in the entire book that I noticed.

Overall, this is a useful, helpful publication which would be enjoyed by many children. I think it will help inspire them and strengthen their knowledge.

Housekeeping Despite Lack of Motivation

The Window Seat

This is one of those days when I don't want to clean. I do not care for dusting, washing floors, sweeping, polishing counters or doing dishes. This is not a good mood for me. I cannot indulge it. I guess I am in a pampered mood and want to relax and be waited on. Yet, this will not happen, since I am the housekeeper.

I will have to make a list. The list will be my guide because my thoughts are not where they should be. You know how it says in the Bible that if we commit our works to the Lord, our thoughts will be established? (Proverbs 16:3) So I will make myself do the housework. After I cross several things off the dreaded list, I will start to enjoy myself. I realize this is just a mood I am in. It is a slacker mood. It is a terrible mood. I will have to work very hard to overcome it today.

Yet, I think I can motivate myself to work harder than normal. I will even wash the floors and clean the ashes from the wood stove. I will make things look lovely, until I start to feel lovely myself!

Are you ready to do some work with me today?  Perhaps you will do a few dreaded chores and then come back here and let me know you did them. Maybe this will help inspire others to work hard at home today.

Blessings
Mrs. White

Freezing Winter Contemplations

Beach House View

It is 30 below zero this morning. I am shivering in this cold little room. I will hurry up and get back to the fire in the living room. As soon as I warm up, I will start some baking and homekeeping. Why can't there be such a thing as "house gloves"? We have house coats (bathrobes) and house shoes (slippers), so why not house gloves? They would certainly help keep me warm.

Mr. White and I have been talking about spending some time at the beach this summer. He has a lot of vacation time and we hope to enjoy the warm summer air at the beach. I can't wait!

I have been thinking a lot about economical ways of keeping utility and heat bills down. I posted a question on one of my facebook pages and got some wonderful responses. One of the ladies mentioned using a fleece blanket as a curtain. They have so  many with pretty designs. I think it's a good idea! Maybe I can get some beach or tropical scenes! These will help insulate the windows and keep out drafts.

I want to fill the house with warm thoughts and images today. Maybe the children can do a craft project about summer time!

What are you doing to keep warm today? Will you do some baking? What will you make?

Blessings

    Memories of Children building Snowmen

    Gonna Br in Trouble

I remember years ago, when were first moved into this old house. My three youngest children raced outside, during the first winter snowfall. We had barely a dusting of snow on our 2 acres. But they were determined to build lots of snowmen. They used a radio flyer wagon and gathered snow from the entire property. They built snowman after snowman, lining our long driveway. There were around 10 snowmen on each side, and the lawn was green and clear of snow! People were driving by and smiling. Some slowed down and waved with approval. Eventually, just before the children were finished, a newspaper reporter came by and took their picture!

On another occasion, when we still owned our store, the three youngest would play on the front porch of the store.  Large snowflakes were falling steadily. They built miniature snowmen all across the top of the porch railing. They had such a delightful time! I can still see their rosy cheeks and smiling faces while they eagerly worked.

When they came back inside, there was always hot chocolate or Campbells soup waiting for them to enjoy!

    Blessings

    When Mother's Heart is Breaking

    Mother Love III

Remember when the children were little? They were so sweet and kind. They loved reading the Bible with Mother and singing hymns. Going to church with them was wonderful. At night, the family said their prayers and the children were tucked into bed for the night. Mother would stand in the doorway and watch them sleep, with a contented sigh.

Life was easier then. When children get older, Mother's heart is constantly breaking. She may find herself weeping more and more. It is hard to watch children grow up and want what this world offers. It's hard to see them walk away from their Bibles and not want to read with Mother anymore.

There are going to be phases. There will be good and bad times. During the roughest moments, Mother may  almost feel paralyzed by sorrow. It is hard to have courage in such times. It is hard to keep smiling or be calm and patient. It is then that we must read more and more about long suffering and mercy. But sometimes, when Mother prays for each of her children, it hurts so much, because of the sorrow, that she may want to stop. Yet, she cannot give up.

Perhaps during the early morning devotions, before the sun is up, Mother will spend more time praying for each child, begging God to keep them on the Heavenly Path. Not all will stray.  But some may glance at the world and wonder....

Mother can pray for their protection.  Then she must remember that the burden is too heavy for her to bear alone. She must leave it to God.

In this story, you will see redemption in action. You will read about struggles with the past and finding a way to move on.  You will learn forgiveness and patience. There are twists and turns in the story that were heartbreaking. It is amazing to see that the Amish go through trials in their families, just as we do.  Suzanne's skillful writing brings smiles along with gentle lessons.

Fit Mommy (Year 2 Week 3)

The following is my check-in for Fit Mommy Friday. It is hosted by Denise. This is a way for many of us to encourage one another, to share our progress and to meet our own fitness goals. When you visit our blogs and read about our week, would you take a minute to share an encouraging comment?

    Here's My week:

    Monday -
I really messed this day up. I tried to do everything for everyone else and failed miserably. I did not exercise. I got up before 4.am. and tried to fit in an all-day car trip (to bring one of my daughters back to college), then dance classes for my other daughter. I barely ate or drank anything all day and was nauseous. We never did make it to dance class. The late afternoon was much better though. I was able to spend it with my oldest and came home realizing I need to make some changes.

    Tuesday -
More Failure - I told myself I needed to rest from the previous day. I ended up being much more tired and fell asleep in the early afternoon. I had no energy. I should have exercised just to get my energy and health back under control.

    Wednesday -
Got up early in the morning and dreaded a workout. But I did exercise. It was for 30 minutes using Lindsay Brin's DVD series. (I am following her calendar schedule.) I was shaking but feeling much healthier by the time I finished. I had energy for the rest of the day.

    Thursday -
Got up later than I wanted, but still did a 30 minute workout using Lindsay Brin's DVD and cardio plan. I had energy all day and was starting to like exercising again.

    Friday -
Today is a scheduled "rest day," on the Lindsday Brin program. But I will do some stretches early this morning.

Note - Fit Mommy is not really about weight loss, but about eating nourishing foods and exercising consistently so we are healthy.

    How was your week?

    Blessings
    Mrs. White

Getting Ready to Face the Family

    Meditation

Early in the morning, before the sun comes up, I am reading my bible, praying and getting the house in order for another day. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to keep myself in a godly, serving frame of mind. It takes a lot of sacrifice and discipline, but when I listen to inspiring music, and read inspiring literature, the joy and reward that comes from such a sacrifice is the most precious thing in the world.

Today, are you getting ready to face your family? Will they be comforted by your loving presence? Will their morning grumpiness fade away in the shadow of your cheerfulness?

This morning, I listened to one of my favorite songs, "Without Him." It was from the Gospel Hour on Youtube. They were paying tribute to 90 year old Eva Mae LeFevre. She got married at 17 and lived a godly life. She was an old-time gospel singer with her family. In this tribute, her son Mylon, in his 60's, said he was proud to be her son. He told her, "You're a wonderful godly Mother."

She died in 2009, less than 2 years after this tribute was recorded. Eva was a classy, kind lady. And I want to be just like her.

After watching this program, and getting my heart in order, I am ready to face my family this morning.

    Blessings
    Mrs. White

    Shopping with my Oldest Daughter

    Jazz du Jour

We left the house this morning around 6 a.m. I had to take Nicole (21) back to college. It was such a long drive! We arrived at her school by 10 a.m. I brought John (13) along for the trip. After we got Nicole settled, we headed into the City of Burlington, where we met up with my oldest daughter, Rachel (22).

We had such a lovely visit. She took us to her salon and cut and styled John's hair. Then we went shopping. She knows where all the best stores are. She knows who is having a sale and exactly how to find just what we need. I was able to find a few winter clothes for Amy. Then we went into a calendar shop. I found a 2011 Thomas Kinkaid planning book. It is full of gorgeous paintings and Bible verses. It is set up like a book and has plenty of room for daily appointments, addresses and notes. I love it! It was discounted and cost only $3.79. I also bought a full size calendar for Amy (16) and one for Matthew (18). Rachel shopped around the store with John and bought him several little gifts. He was so happy.

After our shopping adventure, we walked down Court Street, which is a beautiful district in the city, where you can walk on elegant brick sidewalks and see all the different shops. It was very cold and we wanted to stop somewhere to eat. There was a charming Pub, so we went in there and got settled in a nice booth. The place was decorated in rich burgundy and black. We ordered slices of cheese pizza. It was nice and hot and delicious! Our lunch cost only $6.11.

It was time to head back home. I had such a lovely, quiet visit with my oldest and was very calm and relaxed by the time I got home. You know what? I really needed a break like that. I think I will do it more often.

Editor - In - Chief from Timberdoodle

I received 2, Editor-in-Chief, books from Timberdoodle. These books are published by Critical Thinking Press.  Both workbooks contain 33 lessons. The student reads a passage, then has to find all the errors. (Answers are in the back of the book.)  There is also an "Editing Checklist" and helpful notes for the teacher. There are detailed explanations in the answer key. The book also includes a fabulous "Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation." The Guide is wonderful! It has plenty of examples and descriptions on things like "Adjectives, Adverbs, Conjunctions, Clauses, and much more." It is like a dictionary and teaching tool all in one.

    Description from Publisher:

"Editor in Chief improves your child's grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and attention to detail using a standards-based thinking approach rather than drill and practice. This effective method teaches students to carefully analyze and edit stories that contain errors in writing mechanics and story details.

The stories involve mixed-skills practice, starting with easier errors and becoming more challenging as students become adept at the editing process."

    Editor-in- Chief B1  for grades 6 - 8 ($16.99)

I worked on this with John (13).  He found several  mistakes (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.).  Then I helped him find the rest. We checked the answers in the back. The next day, he worked on another lesson. He really enjoyed pretending he was an actual editor who had to proofread and correct someone else's work!

    Editor-in- Chief C1 for grades 9 - 12 ($18.99):

Amy (16) used this workbook. She found it challenging. We did a couple of lessons together so she could get the hang of things. Soon she was analyzing and finding mistakes like a professional!

    My Overall Impression:

The books are an excellent tool for teaching writing skills. I believe children learn the most during the editing process because mistakes become very clear. Students will get in the habit of reviewing their own work before handing in final papers. They will take their editing skills and use them to become better writers.

    Peaceful Homemaking

    Peaceful Reflections

I cleaned off the kitchen table yesterday. I put away all the books and papers and polished everything up. Then I put away all the winter coats and shoes that had accumulated. Before long, I had found my living room again. Nicole (21) has been home for the past month on semester break from college. Her things have been everywhere. She is heading back to school this week. That means I will notice an emptiness. . something will be missing, even though my house will be clean again. It will take some getting used to.

I enjoyed washing the dishes last night, and cleaning my stove. I lit a vanilla scented candle on the stove top and listened to old gospel music. The rooms are dimly lit with a small lamp. The winter evenings at home are peaceful.

I sat at the table last night, with my bible, notebook and Prentiss book and re-started the study. I had forgotten how nice it is to read Stepping Heavenward and to write in my journal. John and I read 2 chapters in the Bible together and we sang a hymn out of the hymnbook.

I have so many things and errands to do today. Somehow, my heart has to stay home and I will long to get back to my peaceful homemaking.

    Blessings

    Sunday Best

Dressed in Sunday Best, Father and Children Ride in Buggy to Church

Sunday used to be a family day. Almost everyone went to church. I remember, as a child, we would all dress up in our best clothes, grab our Bibles and head off to church together. I loved Sundays. We belonged to an amazing church and we had so much fun there. We were also greatly blessed by the sermon, and fellowship with good people.

The church is the center of the community. This is where mission trips, visitation to nursing homes, work projects and much more is planned and directed. We join together and work for the Lord.

After church, we would head home for a delicious lunch, and rest for the afternoon. Then we would go back for the evening service. We all loved our family day.

On Sunday morning, do you hear the local church bells? Do you get all excited to head to church? What are your childhood memories of Sunday?

Courtney, at Women Living Well, has a charming post at her blog about Sundays in the 1950's. If you have time, head over there and read it. I loved it!

    Blessings

    Positive Action for Christ Review

    TOS Crew Review

Product - The Life of Christ from the Gospel of John

Company - Positive Action for Christ

    Grade Level - 7 - 12

Price - Student Manual (deluxe edition) is $17.95

I received a student workbook, teachers book, CD (containing transparencies) and a scope and sequence booklet.  These resources provide a complete curriculum for a High School level Bible course.

The student workbook is professionally published. It looks beautiful and the pages are high quality. Inside you'll find gorgeous photographs, maps and illustrations.

There are 7 units, with 35 chapters. Each section includes an introductory lesson, Student work  (answer questions, look up Bible passages, etc.) and a "digging deeper" conclusion, which has impressive assignments for the student to complete.

The Teacher's manual includes lesson objectives and quizzes. The entire course is scholarly and requires a lot of studying, analyzing and discussions. This is a top-quality publication.

There were portions of the book that went way over my head. (smiles). I would find it difficult to actually teach this course since I am no theologian! I wouldn't feel competent teaching students who will want to discuss more about each lesson.  It is all extremely fascinating! But I would rather have someone with a ministry degree teach this to my children.  But realize, that's just me! I am sure many homeschooling mothers (and fathers) would love to teach this to their own children. It would even be fabulous for a church youth Bible Group! I would be thrilled if this course was offered at our local church and would happily sign my children up for it!
