Making the Morning Pleasant for the Family

Country Kitchen with Tile Countertops

The sun is just now rising. The house is warm and cozy. The family is still sleeping. This is the quiet time of the morning kitchen. This is the time to start the coffee, or make the tea, and begin the housework.  Pull out your best china cup and have your favorite hot drink while you work!

I will be making chocolate chip muffins today. I will get right to work in just a little while. The aroma of freshly baked muffins and coffee in the morning will help cheer up the family.

I have some errands to do and other adventures to accomplish. This is my to-do list. Instead of writing what I have to do, at the top of the page, I write "Today's Adventures!" and then write my list. It is all in the attitude!  Our morning will go smoothly despite any grumpy- morning- people, if I am cheerful and prepared for a happy morning.

There are other ways to brighten the day for the family. Last month, Mr. White bought a cute little stuffed elephant. He set it on the kitchen table in Amy's (16) spot. When she woke up, she walked into the room, spotted the elephant and her eyes widened. She smiled and said, "Is this for me?" She was so happy. It really helped make her day pleasant.

Amy told me later that she thinks everyone's day should start with a little elephant.

What are you ideas for starting the day happily?

Blessings

Salon Grafix Heat Protectant Spray

Product - Heat Protect Spray

Company - Salon Grafix

Price - $7.49

Where can you buy it? - This new product is available at CVS and Rite- Aid Stores nationwide.

Description from the package:

"A Conditioning Spray that protects hair from extreme heat styling appliances. Suitable for all hair types, it enhances the effectiveness of your blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron while protecting your hair from extreme heat damage with temperatures up to 450 degrees."

My Thoughts:

My daughters use flat irons on a regular basis. My oldest is a cosmetologist and tells us that it is essential to put some kind of product on the hair before using styling appliances. She sees damaged hair at work all the time. She knows how important it is to have healthy hair.

Salon Grafix's Heat protectant spray is clear in color and feels soft to the touch. It feels like a light conditioning product. There is a light, pleasant scent. The spray bottle is 4 oz in size and looks like it will last for a good month or two of constant use. All you need is a small amount to do the job.

Mother's Hope

Peaceful Reflections

I created a little book of hope. . . I had to survive. . . Trials at home, with my teenagers and adult children were wearing me out. I was often crying, sad, and unable to cope. Their pain became my pain. Their struggles with the world overwhelmed me. Their frustrations and anger with growing up came out as attacks within the family. It wasn't okay and I was not handling it well.

This book of hope is like the old time mother's vintage homekeeping book. This is the kind of thing that is handwritten full of advice, recipes and newspaper clippings. But it is not about cooking. It is about motherhood.

I have a pretty purple binder. I am decorating the cover with Bible verses, drawings, pictures of peaceful scenes and the simple words - Mother's Hope.  Inside there are 6 dividers tabs. I have five children, ages 13 - 23. Each child will have a section in the back. I will tape pictures of them when they were precious, smiling babies to help me remember what is inside that grown soul standing before me, fighting with the world. I will remember that I am to mother the child inside them. I will write prayers for them. I will put their letters to me and their cute sayings in that section, as they happen. I will keep filling it up each day or each week or each month or however often I need hope.  The front section will be full of beautiful thoughts, Biblical promises, prayers, quotes, clippings and ideas to inspire me. And there will be a journal. Yes, a journal. .  to remind me of the victories and the miracles. This will build my shaky faith.

Why do I need this? I remember staying up all night with a sick baby. We would stand near the steam of the shower just so the baby could breathe. I would stay awake all night like that and then pace the front porch so the infant could breathe-in the fresh night air.  I remember being so tired, so weak and in desperate need of a break. But I would pray and beg God for strength. I never once thought of myself or what I needed. I just took care of that baby with all the love and courage I could muster.

I remember another night, with a different baby. This one was throwing up and only 9 months old. This baby needed to sleep sitting up. So I set up the car seat and settled that baby down next to me. I planned to stay awake all night to make sure he was okay. But he kept throwing up. So I picked him up and paced the living room floor. Back and forth, back and forth. He stopped throwing up and fell into a deep sleep. Whenever I tried to lay him back down, he would wake up. So I paced, holding that baby all night long. I remember seeing the moon out the back window. I remember how dark and silent the world was at that time. I remember praying and begging God for mercy and courage and for strength. I remember my legs shaking. But I kept going. I never thought of myself, but to ask for endurance. It was selfless. It was a Mother's duty.

Now that my children are older - teens and adults, I realize I have lost my way. I have become selfish without even realizing it. I am not dealing with sickness this time, but attitudes. I am dealing with their struggles, sin natures and frustrations. When these bad moments come, I go off to rest. I say I need a break. I tell them to talk to Dad about it. I escape. I go into survival mode. But I never once ask God to give me strength and courage and endurance. My immediate thoughts are survival for ME. It is selfish.  I must remember that God will provide the rest, when I do the work.

This is why I need hope. . . This is why I need my book. . . It will be my reflective reminder of my job as a Mother. It is a tool to help me remember the ministry of motherhood.

Blessings

Baking Bread in the Quiet of the Morning

Farmhouse Kitchen

Everyone is sleeping. The House is dark and I am awake and ready for my quiet home duties. I will do something special today. I will make homemade bread. This is what the old housewives used to do. They would bake bread early in the morning.

I reserved some potato broth from supper the other night. I saved it in the fridge. I plan to use it as the liquid in my bread dough this morning. It will add a nice flavor.

First I will prepare the recipe from my old Betty Crocker Cookbook. I will stir and mix and then knead the dough by hand. I will do this while it is yet night. There is still darkness out my kitchen window. There is still peace and serenity.

I will work the dough while I say little prayers. Then as it is rising, I will wake up the house.

When everyone is up and getting ready for the day, I will visit with them and smile and listen to gospel music and I will prepare the dough for the second rising.

Then we will go out on an errand. But the joy of the bread dough will call me back home.

I will eagerly walk back into my kitchen, put on my apron and start shaping the loaves. Then I will start our homeschool.

When the dough is ready to bake, I will get that oven all warmed up, on this cold winter day, and then get back to our school work.

Soon the house will be filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and we will all be filled with the warmth and love of home.

Blessings

Inexpensive Glasses

When Nicole (now 21) was in the fourth grade, she struggled to see. I remember thinking she needed glasses. My own test at the time, was seeing if she noticed the crumbs on the counter! She did not clean as well as I would have liked. She was an excellent student, but only her chores were suffering.

The Doctor appointment went well. The optometrist was a wonderful, elderly man who did a great job.  Not realizing we were homeschoolers, the doctor wondered if her teacher at school had noticed a problem with her vision. I told him I had asked our family doctor about it and she gave me his name and suggested I have her tested to see if she needed eyeglasses.  I remember him being so pleased, he wrote a note of thanks and wanted me to give it to our doctor!

In those days, there was no such thing as buying eyeglasses online. We had to buy them directly from the little office where the eye doctor was located. Choices were limited. They were also expensive.

I wonder what it would have been like if Nicole could have had a large selection to choose from. What if she could have picked out a pretty pair she was happy with, rather than settling for just anything because she had no other choice?  We would have been thrilled to order glasses some other way.

Beauty in the Home

Village in the Antrim Glens, Glenarn, Antrim, Northern Ireland

Looking around right now, I see a home that is "lived-in." What that means to me is that I have not done my work. I have not kept up with things over the last day. I have not made the effort to make things look pretty.

Sometimes, I would rather sit in a comfortable chair, eat Stella Dora breakfast treats, drink tea and read a book. But I cannot do that every moment of every day, so I must get up and do some housework.

Cleaning and maintaining a home is like tending to a beautiful flower garden. There might be thorns that harm and cause pain. You might slip on the damp ground, after a storm, and get hurt. You might need to use some extra strong soap to get rid of all the accumulated dirt. There is labor behind the beauty. This labor is literally hard work.

But even in the process, we can create peace and pursue joy. We can smile and take the time to do our best work. We can add a few extra touches here and there to go above the call of duty.  We can work despite the grumpiness of human nature that surrounds us.

Just a few minutes ago, I decided I had to get my work done. First I went to the shelves of our library and selected a sermon to listen to. I found "In a Father's Footsteps" by Charles Stanley. I will listen to this in the kitchen while I clean and sparkle, and then plan our supper.   I will also choose an extra pretty apron to wear. I think I will use my Edwardian Apron this time. I will also put on the pearl necklace that Nana gave me the other night, after reading my post on Classy Homemaking. It will add just a little touch of class to my outfit. (I am wearing a skirt, top, sweater and slippers.)

Making preparations for my work puts me in the right mood to delight in homekeeping. There is beauty in the Home, but only if we make it happen by our efforts.

Blessings
Mrs. White

* Edited update - I realized my copy of the sermon was a DVD (not a CD), so I had to choose another sermon. This one is "Saints in Heaven Watching us" by the late, Dr. John R. Rice and is just wonderful.

The Discipline of Cancer

Standing in the Rain under Tree

When I was pregnant with my fifth child, I was diagnosed with cancer. My doctor was afraid I wouldn't live long enough to give birth. I remember him scheduling my appointments during his lunch hour, just to make sure he was able to see me. His sacrifice and kindness during this nightmare was comforting.

I did a lot of research and learned about real nutrition. I stopped drinking milk, gave up junk food, sugar, and started eating more raw foods. I will never forget walking through a supermarket looking at Oreo cookies and Lays potato chips and almost crying because I could not eat them. I needed to live. My cancer was spreading and I had to avoid anything that would make it worse. I had to eat real, live foods - like apples, carrots and whole grains. I had this terror about eating even one bite of chocolate cake. I wouldn't dare!

I used to tell myself that things like devil dogs, were of the devil. (smiles) These foods, like sins, are designed to kill us off - both physically and spiritually. A strong, disciplined life was a necessity.

Not only did I have to live, but so did the baby. I built up a tremendous discipline. I did not give- in to temptation. I lived a very structured life and ate only what was good for me. By the time the baby was born, I was very healthy, despite the cancer cells. I had surgery - a hysterectomy. I continued to suffer physically for many years, but slowly I healed.

This discipline of eating for survival carried into my spiritual life. I was less likely to give-in to other temptations -  anger, putting off Bible reading, laziness, etc. I was able to live a very structured religious life. It was because of my suffering that I began to yield to God's ways. I was meek and quiet under the rod of affliction.

Even today, 14 years after that terrible time, I notice that if I eat healthy foods and completely avoid processed, man-made foods, my spiritual life becomes stronger.

The discipline of cancer had a lesson for me. It takes a tremendous amount of sacrifice, hard work and prayer to live the life of an overcomer.

Right now, I need that discipline back. I am failing in many ways. I need to remember the history and learn from my lessons. Why do we forget? Why do we fall back into the old ways? Today, I will make a plan - both for food and one for religious duties. May God help us all stay on track!

Fit Mommy (Year 2 Week 11 and 12)

The following is my check-in for Fit Mommy Friday. It is hosted by Denise. This is a way for many of us to encourage one another, to share our progress and to meet our own fitness goals. When you visit our blogs and read about our week, would you take a minute to share an encouraging comment?

For week 12. . . I don't actually remember. . . Basically, I lost internet access and then finally got it back sometime over the weekend. I wasn't able to write a Friday check-in, but I know I exercised a few times that week.

Week 11:

Monday and Tuesday - nothing.

Wednesday - wore ankle weights while cleaning the house.

Thursday - 20 minute work-out in the morning, with light weights, while listening to a sermon.

Friday- Not much time this morning, but did a quick 10 minute work-out while listening to Benjamin Botkin's epic film score over and over again. (Why not have dramatics going on during a workout? - smiles)

I realize I didn't accomplish much, but will keep trying.

Fitness Failure - I have gotten back into my old habit of eating junk food. (shudder). The other day, Mr. White brought home a bag of gourmet dark chocolates filled with creamy mint. I ate two (without having eaten any food that morning) and then started to feel dizzy and couldn't see straight. (smiles) (I am obviously sensitive to sugar!) So I had an apple and felt much better.

Fitness Goal: To have strength and endurance. I do not have any weight to lose, but need to keep my energy levels high.  It is very important that I keep up with a consistent workout plan, or my health will drastically suffer.

Classy Homemaking

British Actress Margaret Leighton Washing Crystal Glasses with Housekeeper at Her Country Home

Whenever my Mother had to go out, she would put on a little lipstick. Then she would go to her bureau and dab a little perfume on her neck and wrists. This was a way to be refreshed and prepare to be sociable outside the home, on her errands, or for appointments.

Mother always looked nice, though, even at home. Her hair was always done. Her clothes were pretty and neat. She enjoyed her daily tasks and always made good food for us to enjoy.

Lately, I have been a little out of sorts. Early in the morning, I put on my apron, fix my hair and . . . then I remember that my pearl necklace is missing. I always love to put that on when I am cleaning the house. It is like getting dressed up to do my work. The necklace is just a $20 piece of jewelery but it makes me happy. Still, it almost feels like I am missing something. I am without that little piece of class that helps me take pride in my work at home.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of ways we can add a little style to our homemaking.  How about getting a fresh flower from the garden and putting that in your hair?  Join that with a little happy step and soon, cleaning the house will be a way to keep you cheerful! I mean, what fun is it to put on some old sloppy clothes and drudge through our home duties? We can make a little extra effort, with lipstick, pearls, fixing our hair and even flowers - to help us with our work. Imagine how our family would feel seeing us look classy while we kept house? That would inspire them and make them appreciate home even more.

What will you do to make housekeeping classy?

Trials and Grandmother's Rocking Chair

Antique Rocking Chair Displayed at Old Sturbridge Village

I have an old rocking chair which belonged to my grandmother. She was from Alabama and was married to a preacher. She had many trials in her life. She was a dear lady. I have decided to bring that rocking chair into my living room as a reminder of my grandmother. I will sit and rock, when times get rough, and sing her favorite hymn, "Tempted and Tried. . We'll understand it all by and by."

When a trial happens, the best thing to do is just start working. Just start cleaning or fixing supper. Say prayers and let the tears fall, but get some housework done. This will help bring peace.

We can think of the generations before us, and the hard work they accomplished at home each day. Our grandmothers read their Bibles and went to church and prayed. They had great wisdom. Yet our culture is changing and we often feel like pioneers in a new world and don't know how to handle anything.  Remembering the history of our families and the old days will help us keep our bearings.

This afternoon,  I am going to bring out the old rocking chair and I am going to sit quietly and pray and sing some of the old hymns and remember my heritage.

The Old Sunday Dinner

Paul Horsch and His Family During their Sunday Dinner

In the Old Days, American Families would gather round the table after Church for a big Sunday dinner. Often relatives would come by - like a brother, aunt or cousins. There would be laughter and happiness and a joyous day of rest from labor. There were Blue laws so the stores were all closed.  It was like the country encouraged everyone to stay home and have family time.  This was still going on in the 1960's.

Mother went out of her way to plan and prepare a hearty meal. She would get the children to help her set the table and then send them off so they would not be "under foot." Mother made a big pitcher of lemonade or iced tea. She also had plenty of freshly brewed coffee. There was often fresh baked bread, or biscuits, that she had prepared the day before. This big meal was a way to nourish the family with comfort and love.

After dinner, the women visited and cleaned up.  Sometimes they talked about the state of the culture or  comforted each other over some trial. This helped make getting through the week much better, knowing they would get together each Sunday after Church.

The men would head outdoors or in the living room and talk and visit, while the children raced out to the porch, or the back field, to enjoy each others company.

This was a precious time of remembering the morning sermon, refreshing the soul with good fellowship and enjoying a rest from worldly cares.

I think we lost a little something when the blue laws were mostly repealed.

When Mother Slows Down

Summer Day

The weather is pleasant and warm. I am surrounded by heap and heaps of melting snow but the air reminds me of a spring day at the beach. It is lovely. I have been caught in a whirlwind for quite some time and it is nice to just slow down.

I don't want to think about what I have to do tomorrow or next week. God will give me the strength just at the right moment - as it all happens.

I received lovely comments and notes about this morning's post. They greatly comforted and encouraged me. I am sure they encouraged many others who are dealing with the same trials.  So many mothers are doing more than they can handle. This will pass. It will get better for all of us.

I spent most of the day resting while the children took over the housework. I did a couple of quick errands but came home and went back to my rest. Amy (16) washed the kitchen floor, vacuumed the playroom, did some shoveling, tidied the kitchen and is now deep-cleaning her room. I am delighted!

I was reading a little from Elizabeth Prentiss' Life and Letters.  I am always encouraged by her words and way of life. She lived during the 1800's and wrote the most inspiring stories I have ever come across. Her writing calms me.

I am just about to have a little hot chocolate. Then I will read for a little while. Tomorrow will be a better day.

Blessings
