Daydreaming about Housekeeping

There are times when we will just sit and plan all the things we need to do in a day. We might make long lists of chores, and baking projects. We might even get some of those things accomplished.

But have you ever daydreamed about housework? This is something I do most mornings. (smiles) I will sit in my chair near the hearth and think about how nice my house will look after I do the work. Most of the time, I actually put those daydreams into action and get results.

Other times, if I am weak or ill, I just walk away from what has to get done, and I keep daydreaming, and smiling. I know what my house will look like, or what I want it to look like, and that makes me happy. That gets me through those days when everything seems to pile up and all one can do is laugh!

So today, if you feel like you are surrounded by flooding water in your kitchen, with cups floating down the stairs, just smile and daydream about better housekeeping days!

Not Happily Married

I just did it. . . I removed the word "happily" from my profile description. Does this mean I am not happy? Of course not! I am delighted and grateful to have Mr. White for my husband. We have been married for almost a quarter of a century. But for me to say I am "happily married" implies that we live in a fairy tale world. Those words may very well discourage someone else. Why? Because marriage is not really about happiness.

Mr. White and I have stood together and faced suffering, trials, tears, discouragement and tragedy. We have been pruned and given up more and more of 'self' for the good of our family. How can this be called "happy?"

Marriage is more about commitment and creating a lifelong family unit. It is being together through all of life's difficulties.

Yet there is a somber joy. . a contentment. . . a feeling of unbelievable gratefulness and humbleness in a long marriage. We are co-laborers in our home and life.

So for me to say we are "happily married" is superficial. It doesn't share the truth of the matter. And that is that we are gratefully married and have tremendous love and respect for each other. We do this through tears and laughter.

The marriage story, the secret of a good marriage, is the sadness in one's eyes from the pain of life, but the deep reverence the couple has for each other. Perhaps to say we are "luckily married" or that we are "blessed to be married" is more accurate.

But the greatest description of all, is the comfort of knowing we will stand side-by-side, through every hardship, through every joy, and despite any pain. . . . for as long as we both shall live.

It was the worst of weeks. . .

I just realized I haven't written anything here since Wednesday.   We've had one crisis after another to contend with. Anything from a call from the police station about someone in need to another person feeling distraught in another state.

Our household has been on "active" missionary duty.   I have been praying and calmly trying to understand exactly what I am supposed to do, through each event. I have been working on keeping steady and happy, so that others can draw strength from me, and make it through their rough times.

It's strange, because I normally blog through all my trials, finding encouragement as I type.   But this time, I couldn't even get a minute to write.

Just a few hours ago, I tried to call someone. I wanted to make sure they were okay. But no one ever answered the phone. I finally got in my car and drove over there. All was well. But I had to be reassured. . . Everything was okay.

As I sit here this afternoon, thinking about so many things, I realize you haven't heard from me.    I know some of you have been coming back, looking for the latest post and were puzzled by the silence. Like I was not home. There was no answer on the blog door. And you walked away wondering and, perhaps, worrying.

One of the greatest things in life we have is stability - a routine - expectations. When those things are interrupted, we have trouble coping. Each day, I need to do certain chores. I need to have certain things happening that my family can expect. And this has to happen, even in the smallest way, despite any trial or hardship that comes along. Blogging, for many of us, is one of our routines. For me to write each morning, helps set the course for my day. It helps ground me, and gives me courage. Kind of like that orange juice commercial, where the person is told about all the horrible things he can expect that day. But he is ready because he drank his juice.

Do We Really Care About our Homes?

I've seen beautiful estates, with lush landscapes. They show pride of ownership. They show a distinction and an honor for "home."

There are those of humble means who have a sense of pride for where they live. They do their work each day, to keep things clean and neat. (Even Ma Ingalls swept the dirt floor of the soddy house.)

I don't understand why society encourages people, in this day, to be casual with their chores. They encourage them to have messy, "lived-in" homes, and laugh at piles of dishes. Unless there is illness of the caretakers in that residence, it shows they don't care about their home.

If we really cared about our homes, we would make sure we did our laundry and our sweeping and our dusting and our washing. We would do our dishes and clean our kitchen counters.

I wonder if this has to do with the abundance in American culture. When we are overwhelmed with "too much," we tend to do "too little." If we have too many distractions, or too many possessions, it can be crippling. The abundance must be dealt with, so that we can focus on the problem, and then the solution.

Family Comfort in the Evening Hours

At the end of the day, the family gathers together for a meal and to share adventures. Sometimes the children will laugh and entertain the others. Or, there will be older teens who talk about their work day.

In old time humble homes, everyone would gather around a vintage radio and listen to the news or a program. Mother would knit or do some mending. Father might be smoking a pipe or doing a little whittling. The children might have jacks to play on the floor, or a few handmade toys.

In other homes, someone would play the piano and all would gather round to sing. Or perhaps one could hear the sound of a banjo as the family sits on the porch playing some old country music and singing along.

In later years, with the invention of record players, the family could hear crooners like Frank Sinatra, and Bing Crosby.

Next, there were television sets where programs like Burns and Allen were broadcast. Families would eat their dinner at the table and then settle down to enjoy a show together.

Families play board games, cards and checkers. This is a wonderful form of togetherness which calms and soothes the hearts of weary souls.

In these days, we have modern radios with Christian stations for sermons, music, talk and advertisements. These are also heard on car radios as we travel on errands or trips. We also have CD players to hear modern music that we enjoy.

Some kind of entertainment goes on each night in most homes. This comforts and cheers the family at the end of a long, hard day.

It is something we can strive to create - an atmosphere of happiness, and entertainment with our families.

We should look forward to the setting of the sun, as we toil on with our work, as the best part of the day - the night time for rest and reward for our daytime labors.

Isn't this just like our earthly life as the daytime, and eternal life (at death) - as our night-time?

Tending the Home

There are many distractions, in life, which keep us from housework and a calm focus on home. These distractions can include anything from clutter and disorganization, to excessive busyness or a gluttony of television.

A list of daily chores for housekeeping is helpful for staying on track. We also gain a wonderful sense of peace when we polish furniture, sweep floors and iron the linens. These tasks show our love for home, if done with a right heart.

They say there is a secret ingredient in good recipes. This ingredient is what makes the food amazing and delicious. That same secret ingredient is needed for a well-kept home. It is "love." When we put love in our work, it gives us a rising sense of honor. We will go the farthest mile, despite weariness, for the love of what we are doing.

When we care for the home, by our daily work, and with a right heart, we create an amazing retreat for those around us. But truly, we are the ones who benefit the most, because we will reap the greatest sense of peace and fulfilment.

If we truly realized the greatness of an eternal perspective, and cared for the home out of a sense of devotion for The Master, our will would be so strong that nothing could distract us from so great a task as tending the home.

Frugal Inspiration from a Legend - Amy Dacyczyn

In the early 1990's, I came across Amy's book, The Tightwad Gazette. I was inspired to live a life of artistic, creative frugality. It completely changed my shopping life. . . At least for a time. . .

Even though I have lived frugally my entire life, despite several bouts of reckless shopping at times, and I know how to live with very little money, I found myself being extremely wasteful last month.

It had been the best December we had in years. I had saved up a few hundred dollars, but spent it all on gifts, most of which were bought - just to buy a "gift." I can only imagine how much cash I would still have if I had remembered Amy's shopping wisdom.

My goal is to re-read Amy's book. I will read it slowly and re-incorporate her ideas into my daily life. (It is much like a dieter trying to change a lifestyle, rather than going on a restricted eating plan.) I will take the ideas which mean the most to me, which will work in my situation, and will find happiness in spending little or no money.

This is not a life of deprivation, but one of amazing Yankee Ingenuity.

I first saw Amy on the Phil Donahue show. I cannot even imagine how long ago that was? I found her book at my local library and then later bought a copy. Ever wonder what she is up to today? I found a video interview of her from about a year ago! She still inspires me and makes frugality look amazing!

A Mile in His Shoes Movie - Giveaway

Movie - A Mile in His Shoes DVD - (Christian Film)

Rating - PG

Running Time - 89 mins.

This inspiring movie stars Dean Cain, as Arthur Murphy - a coach of a baseball team. In his travels, he stumbles on a rural farm and meets a young man (Mickey) with Asperger's syndrome. He is kind-hearted, polite, dedicated to his parents and has a great pitching arm. The coach recruits him for his team. The father has a hard time letting his son go, showing us how difficult it is for we parents to watch our children experience life, without our protection.

We see a team come together and support Mickey. But we also see the cruelty of the real world, when a jealous player causes a serious problem.

I loved cheering for Mickey as his skills grew. The coach is an excellent example of helping each player do their best, no matter what they are going through.

This is a wholesome family movie and is based on a true story.

Pleasant Hours at Home

I love to see everyone happy and busy at home. There should be plenty of projects available so that boredom does not creep in. We have cards, board games, sewing projects, Drawing materials, and such, to occupy ourselves during our leisure hours.

In the winter time, it is good to have sleds, shovels, and other fun tools to keep children busy. The children will run in and out of the house, with exciting news, or to take a hot chocolate break.

Summer time is the most fun - with pools, bikes, toys and picnics to entertain the family for many hours in the fresh air.

As a Mother, I enjoy preparing foods, cleaning, tidying, and making things look nice. But I love to do this when everyone around me is happy and chatty.

As a Wife, I love to see my husband resting or watching television while I am busy working on the home arts.

When we have the older children home for a visit, or guests stop by, I want them to have plenty to do - like playing pool in our game room, or watching a nice movie.

Home is a place of industry and rest. . . And Mother is the hostess of it all.

Facebook is Gone

A few days ago I deleted my Facebook account. This took away my blog's business page, along with my personal page.

I remember when I first set up Facebook. It was a couple of years ago. I didn't understand it. The whole thing scared me and I ended up just deleting it. Several months later, I was told that setting up a business page for my blog was an excellent marketing tool. So I recreated a personal account and put together that business page.

I set up my posts to feed directly to the business page. I also manually added links. Facebook is excellent for sharing information quickly because so many people are on it. They can also hit the "share button" and it goes to their own page. This spreads quickly to their friends, and so on.

I received an enormous amount of traffic from Facebook. It is the number one way to help people find blogs and stay updated. There are millions of blogs out there and Facebook is a tremendous asset. So from a marketing standpoint, for me to delete my account is a foolish mistake.

However, for me, I really have no choice. It takes time to manage, and there is always that temptation to get on my personal page and "see" how my cousin is doing, or how is my niece with that new baby of hers? Even if that only takes a few minutes at a time, it does take time. It is time I don't have. I am only one person. For me to write on this blog, and do everything else I want and need to do here at home, means I must get a grip on my time. I can't let any of it slip away. The behind the scenes marketing that goes on for a blog is draining. I cannot do it alone anymore.

So for me, I had to leave Facebook. I closed that door and went home.

Edited update - Jan. 21, 2012 - the account was deleted on Jan. 14, about a week ago. It has come to my attention that people are having a very difficult time keeping up with the blog and finding it. I think I have a solution. I reactivated the account, but almost completely deleted my personal account. I only need a very basic account there to keep the blog business page. This blog feeds directly over there, so I have no need to visit Facebook at all. Hopefully this will help those of you who would rather have access through Facebook. Thank you for your patience during this difficult process! -

Ideas for A Happy Home

Creating a happy home is a fun job. It takes a lot of work and a cheerful attitude. But we need motivation and ideas to keep it up.

Getting Help from Teens

The past few days, as I've been getting my energy back, I didn't want to take on too much housework. So I asked my boys (14 and 19) to do some of my work. They are sweethearts and are willing to help, but my oldest son is busier. I had to come up with creative ways to motivate him to help me. Here is what I did:

I asked him to take the 7:00 pm shift in the kitchen. This would mean doing dishes and straightening up. I asked him for help "in reverse," which means I pretended to take his side. This made us both smile. As the time approached, I said, "I really don't want you to nag me, but I know you want me to do the dishes." He smiled, but didn't budge. He was working on a project. When it was just about 7, I went to him again and said, "You know? You have been nagging me all day about those dishes. Can't you see I'm busy? I will try to do them in a minute." He smiled again. I walked away. He did the dishes.

Creating the right Atmosphere

Sometimes, watching old episodes of The Brady Bunch, The Waltons, or The Donna Reed show, put me in such a cheerful mood that I want to make my home pleasant and presentable. Other times, I turn on old gospel music, or some Bing Crosby, and I imagine the 1940's housewives and how they kept their homes happy. I have trouble cleaning my kitchen unless my lamp is on, or a candle is lit. I need my surroundings to be pretty and cheerful because that affects my mood.

Reverencing Daddy

I do my best to keep things quiet around the house for Mr. White. I also make sure he has his coffee, clean clothes and clean dishes. I encourage the children to honor their father, by doing it myself. Many Dads have a special chair where they can relax. Home should be the place these men want to come home to.

Careful with Money

We have to strive for a home- centered attitude, rather than a shopping one. The goal is to avoid unncessary spending and keeping the focus off finances, on a day-to-day basis. Money is certainly important, but it is not the main part of our daily life. We need to think more on spending time with family, reading, keeping busy with hobbies and our chores.

We also need to keep the bills low, conserve the use of utilities and fuel for the cars. When we are careful with our money, everyone is much happier at home.

Mother's Attitude

With so many problems facing Mothers, we need to work on having a peaceful attitude. Of course we are going to get upset, and worry about things. If we learn to seriously give things over to the Lord, and not worry about everything, we will have an easier time.

The Daily Fight

To have a happy home is going to take a daily fight. We will fight bad news, irritating people, messes, accidents and sickness. These fights are in the mind. We fight off the negative, and work on remaining steady through it all, like the hand that does not shake in the midst of trauma. This takes practice. It sometimes takes a lot of pep talks! But we must remind ourselves daily that we can have a happy home - if we decide it will happen - no matter what may come!

This is so important! This past year, we had saved a few hundred dollars, specifically for an emergency. One day, as I was driving home, my car was making terrible noises. I pulled off to the side of the road and it completely died. I had to be somewhere in a few hours, and it was urgent! My mechanic, a friend of the family, rushed to my aid and took care of it in just a couple of hours. I was grateful we had the quick cash to pay him.

Mary also has inspiring quotes at the beginning of each chapter. This one is my favorite:

"Today, there are three kinds of people: the have's, the have-not's, and the have-not-paid-for-what-they-have's." - Earl Wilson.

Overall, this is an excellent book. I plan to send copies to my grown children. A constant stream of financial education is essential for peaceful living.

A Morning Visit

One of my favorite, vintage books. {Do you see the bookmark? It is an empty m and m wrapper.}

I am slowly feeling better. But I will have several Jane Austen days before I am ready for normal activity. Last night, I did a little sewing and finished an apron. I plan to cut some new material this morning.

I am going to read passages from Beautiful for Thee, which was published in 1978. It is a charming pink book full of godly messages for wives and mothers. Each chapter is a transcript from a speaker at an event that was hosted by The Sword of the Lord publishers. I love the vintage photographs of each speaker, and the brief description of who they were.

I am looking forward to a restful day by the fire. I will not care that chores are not being done, but I will do my best to make things look pleasant.

The Smiling Mask of Mother's Pain

We mothers deal with so much trauma. It is in our homes, in our world, and in our minds. Right now I am suffering massively with physical ailments. Last Sunday, I woke up and tried so hard to go to church. I actually drove partway and realized I couldn't make it. I went back home and back to bed. I stayed there, off and on for 3 days. . . I have not recovered. . . It is a weary sort of sickness. It is not something that is contagious or that can be diagnosed. But it is disabling.

I am trying to smile and make light of it. One minute I am up and writing, or trying to clean something, the next I am sound asleep. It is a puzzle to the children. My step has slowed. My work is neglected.

But I am smiling, with that sort of saint-like nature that means I am helpless and grateful.

Our children deal with so much in the world. They have problems to contend with in their own lives. They need the comfort of mother's smiles.

We need to do our very best to hide our pain. We need to make home a place of rainbows and cheer, even if we cannot walk very fast, or clean as well as we would like. We must not complain or let despair overcome us.

The children know we suffer. They live with us. They see enough of it. Our job is to encourage their innocence, and enjoy their daily antics.

If we can endure to the end, with that gentle, smiling mask, what a sweet memory that will be, of their dear mother.

A Paper Plate Society

Years ago, in home economics class, we students learned how to set a pleasant table. We were told that dining together as a family was an experience. We felt that it was an essential part of family values. The table didn't have to be fancy, but the basic elements were there:

Plates, silverware, a napkin at each place, cups, and serving bowls in the center.

I've noticed that families are using paper plates on a regular basis. Here is the problem:

- They tend to make people eat more. Why? Because we eat quickly. Paper plates are for fast and easy meals.

When we sit together and dine at the table, the meal goes slower. We visit with one another, smile and enjoy the food. We tend to eat less. The experience is savored and enjoyed.

Our society loves paper plates because no one wants to clean. The plates are a modern substitute, creating a fast food environment. Something is wrong when we are too busy to sit down together as a family to enjoy the blessing of food.

Are paper plates wrong? Certainly not. But they should be reserved for emergencies, when someone is ill, occasional dining, or for picnics. Paper plates should be the rare exception, not the common rule.

What if you have a busy schedule and cannot find time to sit together? Does that mean you have to use paper plates? (gentle smiles) How about setting the table, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with real dishes and enjoying the meal with whoever happens to be there. Meal times are commonly at specific times and should be an expected routine. This helps keep order and security in the home.

Dine alone, at times, if you must, but please use real plates. (gentle smiles)

The Danger of being an Unproductive Housewife

There is a danger in having nothing to do. Many housewives get bored at times, when they don't have a sort of vision. They need to be creative, inventive and productive.

Recently I read a post describing a barrenness in life. This is an emptiness. It made me think of a withered fruit tree that is unprofitable. This kind of barrenness can cause intense depression, misery and sadness. (It can also be caused by doing far too much that we are no longer producing good. This, too, is unproductive.)

We all know that when our children are idle, they get into trouble. But with Mothers, if we don't have something to do, we spiral into sadness. A dark cloud comes over ones life.

When the housewife is sick or incapable of doing anything, she may read or have visitors while she is recovering. She is still being productive while she heals. But the housewife who is perfectly well, needs to find things to do that she enjoys, or that creates something.

The Lord said, "Occupy until I come." Did that mean to keep busy? To keep producing?

What about "Do all to the glory of God?"

And certainly we are commanded to rest one day of the week, and also to rest at night. It is a special, deserved rest that feels rewarding after accomplishing much, in our own small way, for the Lord.

I wonder if being productive - whether in prayer, Bible studies, visiting others, creating, baking, caring for babies and children, or what have you, we are creating a fruitfulness in our lives that will bless us, and those around us.

Yet there is another danger - it is far more serious. It is the danger of doing too much. It is a danger of taking on the whole world and destroying a restful spirit. It can make one angry, physically ill, and depressed.

In other cultures, such as Italy, family is the center of life. The people work, but at a slower pace. I also read a lovely passage from Stepping Heavenward. The main character, Katy, was so overburdened with household tasks that she was ill and irritated. Her husband soothed her, advising her to take on only the work she was capable of. He said something like, once you feel yourself getting upset, or burdened, stop at once to rest, and be refreshed.

We are to be productive, but the ideal way for that is to do it at a steady, calm pace. This is a mysterious sort of way. It is keeping busy in an almost romantic way. It is determined, but tender. It is cheerful and pleasant, and produces lovely things in the heart and life.

Sometimes when I drive my teenagers on an errand, we stop at a little store at the corner of an intersection. Across the street is a large church. We can hear a gentle sound of hymns being played from the church bells. It is lovely. The sound calms my nerves. It soothes me. It takes my mind to heavenly things, and off my daily troubles. I am grateful to them. I wonder if they know it is a blessing to those walking by?

Sometimes I leave my Bible on the kitchen table, or the hutch counter. When I am busy doing chores, I absentmindedly notice it and touch the cover. It slows me down for a moment, and turns my thoughts off this difficult life.

The Church, The Bible, Prayers, and Religious Duties are all designed to comfort us. They are there so we can take a break from the constant, stressful demands in this life. How would we ever survive without them? Wouldn't the light and the salt be removed? How, then, can we ever consider the neglect of these essential duties?

When Mother Doesn't Want to Go Out

Did you ever have some errands that you were dreading? Perhaps you didn't feel well, but those tasks could not wait?

I have had the nicest time, staying home all this week. Today, I have to go out. But all I want to do is stay home! (gentle smiles)

So I will have to take "home" with me. I will bring a special book, for while I am in waiting rooms. I will bring one of my sweet children with me. (I wouldn't bring one of the grumpy ones! - smiles).

I will buy something easy for tonight's dinner, so I won't have to dread any extra work.

I will listen to Fred Astaire this morning, while tidying my house, with a cheerful (in the clouds) outlook. Maybe by the time I have to head out the door, I will be so happy, I will forget that I don't want to go?

There will have to be some kind of reward... hmmm.... I need to think of something lovely for when I get home - as a reward for doing all the dreaded errands that have me so stressed out today....

Perhaps I will look forward to tea, a cozy fire, and reading a sweet new book that I am enjoying.

Or maybe the idea of just having the entire weekend with no demands will be my reward.

A Homemaking Lesson Learned from Mother White

I learned to knit and crochet, as a young girl. One of my Aunts taught me some basic stitches. I continued to work with yarn on my own, until I was in my mid-teen years. . . By then I was too busy to bother with it anymore.

Somehow, I forgot how to do it. . .

I remember when I was pregnant with my first child. I was living with my husband's parents for a short time. I spent each day, at home, with Mother White (my husband's mother). She was the classic housewife and kept a lovely home. We would sit in the livingroom every afternoon and crochet while watching her soap operas.

I remember her re-teaching me how to work with the yarn. She would teach me a few stitches and then head into the kitchen to greet one of her visitors, or start cooking. I remember, repeatedly going back to her and saying, "What was I supposed to do?" or "How do I do that stitch again?" She patiently showed me, with a kind smile, and was proud of my efforts.

I never saw Mother White with a pattern, or book of stitches. She knew them in her mind, just like she knew her recipes. Because of the stitches she taught me, I still remember exactly how to crochet her way. To this very day, I can crochet a baby bonnet, blanket, or scarf from memory without having to think about it. The pattern is permanently embedded in my mind, where Mother White carefully, and patiently, passed it on to me - just like a valuable family recipe.

The Vermont Estate and Sewing Shop

As my 5 children have grown and the youngest is already 14, I have more time on my hands. It has been an adjustment to learn how to be alone here at home. I tried keeping myself busy with books, cleaning, and television. But it wasn't enough. It almost felt like I was no longer needed. One day, I spent 6 hours sitting at the kitchen table (with breaks) doing a puzzle. Can you imagine that? (gentle smiles)

A house without small children is something I am struggling to get used to.

I realized if I had so much spare time to spend hours on puzzles, why not just sew, knit and create something of value? And perhaps sell these items.

But that wasn't enough.

At this stage in my life, I struggle with the idea of earning money. It comes with too much pressure. Then I thought of Aunt Jane, in Aunt Jane's Hero by Elizabeth Prentiss. She was an older woman who spent a lot of her time doing projects, at home, for charitable purposes. Then I thought of Marmee and her Little Women. They would do hand projects and called their earnings, "rag money."

The idea of working for charity intrigued me. I decided to make a policy of donating 30% of profits, from sales, to 2 specific charities that I love - In Touch (Dr. Charles Stanley) and Grace to You (Dr. John MacArthur). This would motivate me to work hard on my hand projects. And my feeble efforts would help to bless some amazing organizations. Every little bit helps, right?

What about the pressure I would feel? I resolved to do this in a slow-paced manner. I won't be taking pre-orders, and will only be selling things I make in my spare time. No pressure.

This new venture is called, Vermont Sewing Cottage, and a new blog has been started. My plan is to write over there twice a week. I will write about our "Estate" and share pictures of our property. I will write about learning new skills and re-learning old ones (like knitting). I will share my novice gardening adventures, and everything related to being industrious at home.

Make the Mess Look Pretty

What happens when Mother is too weak, or worn out, to clean? Lately, my main pastime is making the messes look neat.

I walk into the kitchen, see all the work I have to do, and instead of cleaning it, I tidy it up. I wipe down counters, stack dishes and just make it all look pretty.

It's not that I don't want to clean. I enjoy my work, especially when I listen to sermons or old time gospel on my kitchen radio. But I am so wiped out, physically, that I can barely function.

However, I think I can manage some work this morning. I should just do my marathon cleaning. I will have to give myself a full hour, rather than the standard 30 minutes. I need the extra time, to drag myself though the chores. (smiles)

I should probably include the children in this. . . Maybe I will write them chore letters? Or perhaps I will hand out chore cards? I think the cards would be better, since letters would take more work for me.

After the hour is up, hopefully I will have cleaned the parlour, washed sheets, done laundry, cleaned the kitchen, and vacuumed. If that timer goes off, and I am not finished, I will just organize the mess, tidy it up and make it all look lovely.

Then I will happily rest for the day!

Making History in the New Year

I love the stories from the old days. I enjoy hearing about the Pioneers, the Colonists, the Pilgrims, the Victorians and all the people who lived before us.

There were different clothing styles, different kinds of work available, and different cultures. It is fascinating to learn about life in the old days.

Someday, what I am doing right now, will be the old days for future generations.

We must always keep in mind, that what we do each day, becomes History.

I want to take that thought with me in the New Year. I want to think more about what I can do for others, what I can do to create, and to help, and to be an example. I want to do this, rather than focus on myself, or what I could do better or what I could change.

This coming year is not about me. No year should have ever been about me.

Final Fitness Report

This is the last of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

Here is my Fitness Report:

Monday morning - 30 minute workout. (Included target toning with light weights) A short time after this, I had severe physical problems (trouble walking, shaking, etc.) and had to rest.

I was not able to exercise for the rest of the week. I realize I was worn out by the holidays. We had a lot of company. It is exhausting having guests! But completely worth it!

I have enjoyed a long rest these past several days and will get back to exercising next week. It is important to accept limitations when seeking to get (or stay) fit. Sometimes we need time off.

I was still active, however. I did plenty of housework and a few errands. But I also slept a lot and just rested all week.

Push - Ups -

I did want to update you on my goal concerning push - ups. I was reading the archives here and found something from January of this year (almost a year ago.) My goal was to do 10 real push- ups. I am happy to report, I am still doing 10 and am very happy about it.

* My ongoing fitness goal is to workout daily and to replace snacks with more nourishing foods. I don't have any weight to lose, but at my age, I need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't creep up!

* Remember, we all have different health struggles and approaches to fitness and nutrition. I would love to hear what you are doing to stay fit! Please share in the comments section and then visit the other bloggers to cheer them on!

Rural Housewives

It is bitterly cold here in Vermont. We end up almost trapped at home. It's too cold to go outdoors, but we must for chores and errands. Winter is the time to settle inside near the fire, but it can be a very lonely experience.

One way rural housewives, in the old days, would pass the time was by listening to radio programs while knitting or sewing. This was during breaks from their household tasks. I have heard about something called, "neighboring over the air," or "radio housewives," which included programs of homemakers telling stories or sharing recipes over the airwaves.

There were other programs, including news segments, or ongoing stories that even the children would gather around to hear. These might be suspense, mystery or westerns.

I love the idea of sitting by a large piece of beautiful furniture that was called a radio, while mending or knitting. It would be a lovely way to pass the time.

Housewives would also do their baking and try to have something special in case an unexpected visitor came by. -We need to keep the cookie jar and breadbox filled!- When someone stops by our house, I love to have freshly baked cookies, brownies or fudge to offer our guests.

I realize rural housewives often feel alone. Sometimes they need a little encouragement, a funny story to cheer them up, or some little bit of advice about the work they do all day long. The radio programs and occasional neighborly visits were a blessing. Church services and other events were also greatly appreciated.

Today, radio programs are mostly talk shows, music or a myriad of commercials. Occasionally, we can hear something like Adventures in Odyssey while driving down the road, or listening in on the old kitchen radio. I wonder what would happen if they brought back a homemaking program on the radio? A little visit over the airwaves might be just what we need!

Aging Gracefully

Mr. White and I were watching a Hallmark movie the other night. The elderly mother in the program had me puzzled. She looked familiar. Halfway through the movie, I realized she was Shelley Long! She had aged. But still had her charm.

I have watched many old movies starring people like Myrna Loy (in the original Cheaper By the Dozen). I was also startled to see photographs of her in her older years. Age does some powerful things to a person. But some, like Myrna, age with beauty and grace.

We have a neighbor who is in her 80's. She still paints her nails, wears blush and dyes her hair black. She has lovely manners and charm. She is an elegant person and very sweet and kind to all.

I think that to age gracefully, mostly means that we are sweet natured. The kindness exudes a beauty and glow like none other. The older and more frail I become, the sweeter and calmer I want to be.

This past week, I have felt crippled. I am back to using my cane again. I realize this confuses everyone around me. Sometimes my husband teases me because I look young.

I know it is strange to see me walking with a cane, and at times, shaking as I walk. But those things pass and my health improves so much that I can workout consistently, walk briskly on my own and be energetic! It's quite a contrast. However, I know the crippling will continue with age. I prepare for it by watching the lives of older people I admire.

My sweet Mother-in-law, always had her nails done, her hair fixed up and a kind smile on her face. She knitted and gardened and did her very best to look presentable, even through a ravaging illness that took her life a few years ago.

My own mother walks very slowly. She is often seen with a cane. She can't hear well, but has a kind, pleasant demeanor. She is loved by all around her. This, I think, is the essence of aging gracefully - when one attracts the love and devotion of others.

Elvis Presley and Gospel Music

Years ago, I saw a documentary on the life of Elvis Presley. He came from a poor, hard-working family. Elvis used to sing in church and was dearly beloved by his godly mother.

He lived a fast life, had a beautiful home and was admired by many people. He is still an American icon. But what I remember most about him (and yes I was around when he was alive), was his gospel music.

From what I understand he would stay up all hours of the night, and sing the old gospel songs, with several other singers.

His Mother loved The Blackwood Brothers, and I love them too! Such beautiful, heart touching music!

I have a CD Set of Elvis singing gospel music and I love to listen to it while working around the house.

I want to share a song of the Blackwood Brothers singing "Where No One Stands Alone." There is just something special about going back in history and hearing the old ways, the old songs and the nostalgia of seeking to live a godly life.

P.S. I have to ask. . . Do you see Graceland in the photograph above? And that pink Cadillac? Does his house look anything like mine? (smiles) And I realize that Mr. White has a purple Cadillac, but the pink one above is just as lovely.

The Keeper of the Chanukah Lights

I realized the other night, as I was sitting with the children and looking at our Menorah, that I was the Keeper of the Chanukah lights. This has tremendous significance since we are to be the light of the world. When we keep certain customs and traditions, we remind our children (and ourselves), of God's ways.

If you are not familiar with Chanukah, may I share a little with you now?

We have used the same Menorah for many years. Each year, I pack it away in a special shelf in our closet. I also store our Chanukah supplies - like dreidels, extra candles, and decorative items. I have Chanukah movies and a Music CD of special songs. I also have story books and special articles and stories I printed out from the Internet and keep in my homemaking binder.

On the first night of Chanukah, we light one candle. I make latkes and we play the music CD. It is a festive time. We also give each other one gift each. Then I read the children a story while they play the dreidel game.

On the second, and subsequent nights, it goes the same. Except we light the same number of candles that corresponds with which night of Chanukah we are observing. For the second night, that is 2 candles.

I always have an extra gift stashed away, in case we have unexpected company. This has happened twice already this past week. The guest often doesn't realize it is Chanukah, and ends up sitting through part of our fun. They are delighted to receive a gift and enjoy a few minutes of our holiday.

The other day, because it was also Christmas and no one had to work, we had all the children home. Rachel (23) brought her Fiance, Ben. Rachel has not been able to come home for Chanukah in many years. She had forgotten most of the stories. We gave out presents and the family scattered throughout the house. Ben, John (14) and I sat alone at the table. I set up the Menorah. Rachel came and sat with us for a bit. I lit the candles. I started to read one of the stories. At this point in our lives, I do not force all the children to sit with me. They are all growing up and have many other interests. It's funny how Rachel, living away from home for so long, yearns for the old days of sitting at the table for the Chanukah stories.

Ben did not know too much about Chanukah. He enjoyed playing dreidel with John, while I talked about the Greeks and how they desecrated the Jewish Temple and tried to force the Jews to stop observing Sabbath, read Torah, and observe their holy days. I talked about how Jewish Children would sit in caves with the rabbis and learn Torah. But the soldiers could appear at any moment. The children knew to put away their lessons and start playing the dreidel game, so the soldiers wouldn't know they were still keeping their religion.

Ben listened as I told him about how I must sit and keep guard over the Menorah until the last candle burned out. I told him how we are so busy in this life, and that we rush through so much, that we miss the central foundation of our existence. We are here to serve and worship God, not to be consumed with the cares of this life. Ben was fascinated as we sat in the dim room, by the light of the Menorah.

As the Keeper of the Chanukah lights, I am the one who is responsible for keeping the customs alive in this family. I am the one who makes it joyous and keeps it going year, after year, after year. Sometimes I've rushed through each night's activities and felt a sense of loss. Other years I have savored each moment, and each lesson, and been greatly blessed.

The other night, as Ben and John and I sat at the table, watching the lights burn out, there was a sense of loss. There was a coming sense of darkness that made me sad to see it end. Then I told the children that we must remember the lesson of Chanukah. And that is to never conform to the world, and to always keep God's ways regardless of what the world does around us.

This is the lesson of the light, that we must keep burning in our hearts, and lives, for all time.

When Mother Feels Unappreciated

I am shaking this morning. I am weak and weary on this path of life. But I am in good spirits. I know where my source of comfort lies.

I worked very hard yesterday, while the family was all at home. I cleaned and baked and cooked and visited. It was taxing on my fragile body. I remember standing over the stove in the late afternoon and stirring the food in a pan. I was shaking then. I thought to myself, "I am too old for this." I didn't feel young or energetic anymore. I did not have the endurance to do basic things. Then I thought of my own mother, with a crown of silver and a cane in her hand, and how she still cooks, even if she is shaking. (gentle smiles)

I asked my teenagers for help. They were occupied in the parlour, laughing and visiting and didn't understand my need for help. They had already done so much for me. It would have been easy for me to burst into tears (like a small, tired child) and collapse into a chair, but I prayed a little prayer and smiled, and said tenderly, "I just need a little help." One of them smiled and came to my assistance. I realize they see me, a picture of health, but don't have any idea of the deafness, the blindness, the aches, the shaking that goes on in this old mother. When they grumble and complain about helping (like all normal children), they know not what they do. They think mother is a tireless saint who can work miracles in the home and kitchen.

I once read about the troubles of Elizabeth Prentiss(1800's), in one of her books. She wrote about her struggle with frail health and how her children would gather around her for stories, or help, but they would elbow her and nudge her and cause her pain - unknowingly. It "cost her" dearly to be a mother, but was worth every bit of pain.

Patricia St. John,in her autobiography, spoke highly of her mother. She talked about how she and her siblings would giggle and laugh and make fun, at times, when her mother tried to teach them the Bible. Looking back she realized they had caused her heartache. That mother was greatly admired for her patience and loving guidance, despite the trouble.

There are many moments when I feel unappreciated. My greatest weapon to fight this dark thought, is to smile and to pray and to keep going. . . I have already seen the fruits of my efforts, in my grown children, who are tender and loving and helpful. When they grow up, they no longer think as children. They are no longer focused on self, or unaware of the pain of others. This is why I love the Biblical prayer, "Remember not the sins of my youth." It comforts me to think of that in relation to my teens. They know not what they do.

But most of all, my never-ending goal is to be like the mother in Loretta Lynn's song, "The Coal Miner's Daughter." This mother did not grumble, despite poverty, hard work, and constant cares. Loretta summed it up in one simple phrase, "To complain there was no need. She'd smile in Mommy's understanding way."

I have been greatly encouraged by the writings of Mother Teresa. This quote, in particular, is the solution to feeling unappreciated:

"In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."

I'll Be Home For Christmas

I've had a few rough Decembers, here in Vermont. But this season has come with many blessings. We have been able to buy extra groceries, give to those in need, and pay all of our bills. We have much to be thankful for.

This morning, I am baking apple pies. We are having baked ziti for an early dinner. All my children will be home. I can't wait to see them.

Mr. White and Nicole (22) will head to the home of an elderly neighbor and bring him treats and presents. They will be home in time for dinner.

I love that most of the stores are closed and that everyone has the day off from work. There is no focus today on spending money, but on bringing happiness and good cheer to others.

Yet there are many who are sad and alone today. I found Frank Sinatra's song, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" which is so sweet. But he ends the song with, "if only in my dreams." Something that cheers me up is thinking about childhood Christmas memories, or some special year when my own children were young. Do you have memories you'd like to share? I'd love to hear about it!

If I Visit You at The Dinner Hour

I remember visiting my Aunt Norma and Uncle Bob (a reverend) in Alabama. We would spend several days with them. Early each evening, my Aunt would be cooking in the kitchen. Uncle Bob sat in the recliner and watched a little television. The house was quiet and happy. Everyone visited or played while we waited to be called to the table for prayer, and our supper.

My parents had a similar routine. Dad would be in the living room watching the news or some other program. We children would be there with him, or in our rooms finishing up homework. We could hear Mother in the kitchen cooking. It was comforting knowing she was in there, preparing our food. She always set the table with fresh vegetables in serving bowls, and had little plates of bread. We were happy when she called us to the table.

Today, whenever I see the sun starting to set, I am able to relax. All tensions and troubles seem to fade. It's like I can shut the doors and shut out the world, because it is almost the dinner hour. It is time for our daily rest from trouble and turmoil. So I turn on the lamp, and listen to the quiet sound of gospel music from my kitchen radio. I put on my apron and start preparing food. And while I cook, I am at peace.

I hear the sound of the family gathered throughout this large old house, and they are laughing and talking. Every so often someone will come to the kitchen and ask, "How much longer 'til supper is ready?" And it gives me a great sense of pride, because I am making them a delicious dinner and it makes them happy.

The dinner hour is like a break from hard labor. It is a special time for families. It is familiar and secure and special. Nothing else seems to matter. It is the comfort of home and family.

And today, I wonder. . . If I visited your house tonight, at the dinner hour, what would it be like?

Fitness Report and McDonald's - Be Our Guest - Food Giveaway

This is the third of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

Here is my Fitness Report:

Monday morning - 30 minute workout. (Included target toning with light weights)

Monday evening - had an accident. Slammed my foot into a chair in the dark and caused some painful damage.

Tuesday - exhausted. But planned to do some light exercises on the floor. I never did get around to it. Decided to rest my foot instead.

Wednesday - foot still bruised and a little swollen, but much better. Took a trip into the city and walked all over the place. Ran upstairs instead of taking elevators, ran through rainy parking lots. Had lots of energy. Did good.

Thursday - brisk walking during errands. No specific exercises.

Friday - (today). I woke up too late to exercise. But will do a few light target toning exercises later. Foot it still damaged but pain is almost gone.

* My ongoing fitness goal is to workout daily and to replace snacks with more nourishing foods. I don't have any weight to lose, but at my age, I need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't creep up!

I love the Ronald McDonald House Charity. My oldest son and I stayed in one, several years ago, when he was undergoing medical care. It was a tremendous comfort and a lovely place.

Sitting Alone at the Kitchen Table

The other night, I carefully placed a white lace tablecloth on my kitchen table. I was making dinner and making things look lovely for the evening meal.. . But no one was around.

I listened to soothing music and put a pretty candle on the center of the table. Then I put plates, napkins and silverware in each place. . . I did this, knowing everyone was out or busy.

When the food was ready, I created a nice presentation on my dinner plate and walked over to a chair at the table. I sat there all alone and ate. It was a lovely meal.

My teenagers and husband came and went. They ate quickly or not at all. They were busy. They had jobs or events they needed to go to.

On holidays, I like to read to the children and have some time together. But they rush through the events, saying gently, "We are not kids anymore." or "We have other plans." They are busy, growing up and having their own lives. This is normal.

Instead of feeling sad when they don't have time to help bake cookies, or make a special meal, or sit while I read to them, I do it myself and smile. Yes, I read to myself. I bake on my own, and I sit at the beautifully- set table alone.

I do this because it is stable. It brings me joy. . . They all see I am doing this. They rush through their lives, but they can still see what I am doing. And they know they are always welcome at the table, whenever life slows down for them.

I will not change because they are busy. I will not stop setting the table or making special meals, because they need to know those things will always be waiting for them when they need it.

Because one day, when they have grown up, they will remember that mother always does these same things, whether they are able to join me or not. Whether they are busy or not, mother will be sitting at the kitchen table.

They will remember that, despite the hustle and bustle of life, Mother and Home are stable.

Last night, as I sat at my kitchen table, I thought of my religion. I thought of how times and culture change, but my faith must stay the same. I thought of how people get too busy to do the most basic foundational things that keep their spirits joyful and their hearts warm with love. And I realized that by sitting at the kitchen table, even if I am alone, it is similar to how I must keep my religious duties, even if no one else does.

Homeschooling Stories and Ideas - Index of Articles

I started homeschooling in 1990. Things are so different now! We have more resources, more curriculum choices, and the public is generally more accepting of this kind of education.

My five children were homeschooled from pre-school through high school. My oldest (now 23) has graduated college. My second child, (now 22) has completed 3 and 1/2 years of college. My 18 year old and 16 year old have finished school with me, and have gone on to experience life in the working world! I am currently teaching my youngest, who is 14 years old, and has a slight learning disability.

Through the years, I have kept to a very basic teaching philosophy that has stood the test of time. I have mostly used 1800's school books, including the McGuffey Readers, and Ray's Arithmetic. I have also used all kinds of curriculum from various publishers.

My children are not Harvard - bound geniuses, they are average and normal, like their father and I. However, they are extremely creative, inventive and have amazing life skills.

Through the years, and with seasons of change, I have adjusted our homeschooling plans. There is no fixed right or wrong way. We all need to be flexible and make changes as often as necessary. Sometimes what works for one child, will not work for another.

When I first heard about this new book, by beloved evangelist, Billy Graham, I wanted to own it! I love everything written by this preacher and his family. I own books by his late wife, Ruth, his son Franklin and his daughters Anne and Ruth. Their entire family is inspiring.

But most of all, I was eager to read about 92 year old Billy Graham's experience with old age, and what his life is like since his dear wife, Ruth, passed away.

The book contains glimpses into his own life, memories of his family, and plenty of Biblical lessons for the reader. He talks about the retirement years, struggles with the pain of old age - both physical and emotional (loneliness, depression, feeling useless, etc.). He says he has a walker, wheelchair and cane beside his bed.

If you are young, the book will give you compassion for the elderly and inspire you to want to be more considerate and find ways to encourage them.
If you are middle age, the book will help prepare you for your own life as an elderly person. You will understand what is up ahead, and be guided towards these years by one of the greatest preachers of our time.

If you are at the age of retirement, you will be nodding with knowing smiles, while you read. You will be advised, encouraged, and guided into a more productive life - whether from a wheelchair or a sick bed. You will find your joy and purpose again!

Overall this is an excellent book. You will feel as if you are sitting in the author's home, near the fireplace, gleaning wisdom and encouragement. You will walk away refreshed and ready to face life with new vigor, regardless of your circumstances.

The Light in the Window

It is so dark and stormy outside. My house feels cold and empty. It seems like the days are getting shorter. It makes people sad, like there is a depression falling over our homes.

One thing I like do to is turn on a few lamps in the early afternoon. It sends a gentle light throughout the house. Those driving by, or walking by our house, will see a light in the window. They will see that someone is home. . . That someone cares about this place. . They will see that light and feel welcomed and warmed.

It's time for me to turn on a quiet CD of songs by Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. I will turn on my kitchen lamp, put on my apron, and start cleaning.

Soon it will be time for the early evening's errands. I will have to go out. But before I do, I want to make sure everything is neat and pleasant and happy. Mr. White will have the wood stove on, for when I come home later. I will see the pretty light in the window, and feel welcomed in my own home as I walk through the door.

I don't want to have that bad feeling when I come home tonight - the one of dread, because I left the house without cleaning first. I want to come home to order and beauty. . . and a little lamplight to make me smile.

For three mornings this week, I worked out for 30 minutes. This included target toning with light weights. I was feeling sick the whole time and decided to take Thursday off. Since today is Friday, I will be working out in just a few minutes.

(I will mention that I ate chocolate all week. But I did eat healthy food as well.)

On Monday, I visited the Moms into Fitness site to access her 4 free trial workouts. These are free to anyone! All I had to do was answer a few questions to get a customized workout plan. The questions included things like - my age, my fitness level, my weight and height. The free workouts come with a pdf calendar plan, which is one of my favorite things about founder, Lindsay Brins' programs.

Importance of Home Economics Training

When Homemakers Learn The Science of Keeping a Home, Society Benefits.

Keeping the home is a challenging career in itself. We are not unemployed, living in leisure. We have daily work that keeps us busy. It is important that we are trained in the scientific arts of home economics. Here are just some of the things we need to do:

1. Operate and maintain appliances. We also need to understand how new models work and see if they will make our homes more efficient - both in saving labor and money.

2. We need to learn nutrition. This is for the health of our families. This includes our choices in the grocery store, our meal planning, our baking and cooking. We must have basic cooking and shopping skills.

3. Basic Medical Care. We are lay-nurses. We must know how to handle colds, fevers, and minor injuries.

4. Child Care and Development. We need to know the basics of caring for a baby, toddler, child, teenager and young adult.

5. Basic Sewing. We need to be able to, at the very least, repair clothes and sew on buttons. Making clothes for the family, or sewing drapes, and doing embroidery work, etc. are nice, but not essential in today's homes.

6. Laundry and Cleaning. To run a sanitary, efficient home, we must learn the basics of laundry and how to clean a house.

What if you don't know any of this stuff and are struggling at home?

In the early part of the 1900's, homemakers clubs were available in many towns throughout the United States. This was where the women would get together to learn from one another. In my local town's Historical Society, there is a photograph of a group of mothers in a homemaker's club in the 1930's. Their support of one another was wonderful!

Today, we can join quilting clubs, cooking clubs and the like. We can also read books, watch videos and learn in many different ways. The important thing to remember is that we must always continue to sharpen our skills and learn because changes in modern culture and technology affect our work at home.

Fighting the Hectic Life

Home is to be a place of rest. The family should feel at ease and secure. If they are stressed from activities and the pressure of deadlines, or too many projects, there will be tension and misery.

A grumpy husband is soothed by a pleasant environment and a calm wife. Rambunctious children settle down when they become familiar with a structured routine.

A wife who doesn't take on too many projects, can tend to her home and family duties with a sweet demeanor.

Often, we mothers put too much pressure on ourselves to accomplish too much, and it only leaves us weary.

We certainly have a list of daily tasks, but if they are a regular habit - a routine, we can handle them with an unhurried approach.

We make home a precious place, when we tend to our work in a sweet and steady manner.

Daily we must fight the mentality of being overly busy. We must deal with the onslaught of potential clutter of both things and life, so our homes can be places of peace and rest.

The sweetest reminder of having a peaceful life, is to take care of a newborn baby. A baby brings out the quietest, most patient devotion in a mother. This helpless, precious infant makes everything else seem meaningless, as Mother sits in a rocking chair for hours, humming lullabies and cuddling that small child.

When the baby is content, mother tidies the house and smiles to the family. She looks over the crib, of that sleeping baby, with the greatest sense of joy. She has won the battle of giving up the hectic life, and traded it for a peaceful, settled life at home.

A Surprise from my Kitchen

The children and I will be having a little get together with Nana and Grandpa tomorrow night. We will have ginger ale and hot chocolate, cookies and brownies. It will be a lovely winter evening, here in Vermont.

Nana has asked me to make a few things. I will bake the brownies.

But there is a secret and I hope you don't tell her. (smiles) Grandpa and I love Lemon Meringue pie. Our favorite companies who make them (frozen) are Sara Lee and Mrs. Smith. But we cannot find either one around here!

So yesterday, I bought the ingredients to make it myself, for the very first time!

I will have to do my regular housekeeping chores first. I will have to start our little homeschool. I also have some errands to do. But when I am finished with my duties, I will put on some pleasant music and I will turn on the little lamp in my kitchen, and I will set a happy mood to make a very special pie for our party.

If it doesn't turn out well . . . I'll just toss it out, and never tell Nana. (gentle smiles)

(Edited update - I made the pie, and it was delicious! I was surprised it only took around 30 minutes before it went in the oven. The only time I panicked, was when I was mixing the meringue. I had no idea how long it was supposed to take, but I called Nana for advice, and it worked out fine.)

The Lighting of the Trees

Each year Mr. White puts lights on our large, outdoor trees. This year, I stood in front of one of them, so you could get an idea of how truly tall they are!

We live in a charming rural village in Northern Vermont. Our house is on the main road. We love to have lights up to help brighten and cheer those who drive by.

We often keep the lights up throughout most of the winter. It looks so pretty with the snow, just like a winter wonderland!

School at Home without a Lesson Plan

I love the image of old schoolhouses in early American History. There were many brilliant teachers who did an outstanding job educating our children, using such great books as the McGuffey Readers.

Yet, in most of our homes, copying the method of those historic schools just isn't reality. We are home with our families and have children of all ages, or perhaps only one child. We have chores and responsibilities that take up most of our time. It would be impractical for me to run a little school at home.

Ma Ingalls was a teacher before she married. She owned the hardcover schoolbooks her own children needed. In times of isolation, and when there were no schools, she took on the task of teaching her children with those classic books. She managed to fit this in around chores, caring for the house, husband and children. She made it a gentle part of their lives.

I have been a homeschooling teacher for more than 2 decades. I have graduated children and am currently homeschooling only one child - a teenage boy with learning disabilities. I have given up on traditional methods of home education and am taking a slower approach. There is no rush for this child to graduate. He is on the road of life-long learning.

I teach without a lesson plan.

Instead, I take his stack of books and he works through most of them on his own. I help him with some of the subjects and correct his work.

I don't judge his progress by how many pages he finished, or which subjects he covered. I judge his progress on the improvement of skills and an increased knowledge.

At the end of each day, I take my Class Lesson Planner, and write down what he did, not what he was supposed to do. I use the book in my own way, not necessarily the way it was intended. And it works wonders for us. I write down notes about his achievements and his struggles. It is like a short diary of his education. It gives us a visual record of what he has accomplished.

Each Mother/ Teacher must find her own way of educating her children. There is no set rule. Making it as pleasant and stress-free as possible is something we must always strive for.

Tonight's View From the Kitchen

I was just making dinner and looked out into the parlour. I felt the warmth of the stove and enjoyed the scent of cranberries from a candle on the table.

I could see all the snow outside our windows. It looked so pretty and peaceful here. I wanted to share.

Mother's Saintly Presence

Mothers spend many hours tending sick beds, leaning over cribs, serving nourishing foods, and comforting weary hearts.

Saintly Mothers are tender and delicate, yet strong in spirit.

These Mothers have Heavenward eyes. There is a veil of peace surrounding them. It is almost mysterious.

They walk along a thorned path of life and light. Despite pain and sorrow, these Mothers exude a gentle sense of joy.

Privately, they pray and beg to hold the Lord's hand through life, for their human frailties make them prone to stumble. Their prayer closet is the source of their success.

These Mothers think lowly of themselves because they are consumed with the happiness and welfare of others.

To be ensconced in their presence is one of the greatest joys of all. How blessed are those who have a Saint for a Mother! And truly, How wise is the woman who strives to be one!

Fitness Team Report and - Lilla Rose Giveaway

This is the first of four posts from our Fitness Kick-off project. I have joined with 9 other bloggers to share progress and activities on staying fit (or getting fit) before the New Year.

Here is my Fitness Report:

Each morning, I worked out for 30 minutes. This included target toning with light weights.

On Monday, I started a notebook to keep track of my exercising and eating. I made the mistake of forgetting to eat breakfast and ended up feeling like I was starving until lunch time. Sometimes I get so busy, I forget to eat. Looking over my food diary, I realized I ate some snacks but only ate one meal. Not good!

I did much better on Tuesday, but then Wednesday, I completely forgot to eat a real meal the entire day. I had been surviving on little, junky snacks (like a few chips), rather than eating small scheduled meals (like an apple with oatmeal, etc.). Writing in the food diary helped me see what I was doing. I do have to explain here that my health difficulties (former cancer patient) make it difficult for me to eat regular foods and in regular amounts. I rarely eat what I make for my family. And when I do eat, it is a very tiny portion.

My ongoing fitness goal is to workout daily and to replace snacks with more nourishing foods. I don't have any weight to lose, but at my age, I need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't creep up!

The Blessing of Being a Half - Southern Mama

I have a disattachment, somehow, to the cares of this world. I think it has a lot to do with having a strong cultural background and then living in a different place.

My father is from rural Alabama and my mother is from suburban Massachusetts. We grew up in a beautiful, wealthy town, south of Boston. But the culture of my father's life was with us every moment. We travelled to Alabama many times. My Uncle was a minister and had a small church, packed with the sweetest people you could ever meet. Many cried with joy, or repentance, at his revival meetings.

Have you ever heard the beautiful, humble songs of the saints in those old rural churches, down south? The melody echoes in my memory, even after all these years. The thought of them brings tears to my eyes.

When poor, gospel country clashes with rich, majestic values, there is a shaking of the character. There is a yearning for a life that is true and poor (in worldly goods) and grateful.

There is a reason this old reserved New Englander has a tremendous attachment to the old southern ways. I live in a cold society. It is full of culture and worldliness. But my heart is in the memories of the old Alabama life.

It is the world where Grandma wore pretty dresses, and spoke with such a deep accent, I could never understand her. She had the sweetest heart! I can still see her smiling, walking across the hill on the family property.

I remember her old house. It was humble and precious and just like something you would see in a movie from the 1930's. It was a white, 2 story, with a large covered front porch. The furniture was clean and neat and simple. Mothers in those days would set out tablecloths and bring you a drink with lots of ice. They would make sure you were happy! The home and the neighborhood were nothing like the suburban area in which I lived. It seemed like rural Alabama homes held the hardest working, strong families you could ever meet.

I remember living there for part of a summer, as a teen, and being given some lovely dresses. They fit me perfectly and were homemade. I only wish I still had them. You can't find beautifully made fashion like that anymore.

The Bible was the book everyone wanted to read. It sat predominately where all could see it. It was treated with the greatest respect.

I cannot even remember anyone not going to church. Everyone got dressed up and went together. Oh, and the music of that time is outstanding. Famous gospel singers openly loved the Lord. You could hear it in their songs. They knew where the real money came from - singing the old godly songs, knowing the reward was in Heaven.

The homes were neatly kept and lovingly cared for. The summer heat was intense but just right. There were gardens and delicious home-cooking. Neighbors watched out for neighbors and were friendly and thoughtful.

The sermons in the old country churches would melt the heart of the coldest sinner. They touched the soul and would never leave you. This is the southern culture that has stayed with me all these years. And so I listen to old gospel songs, from the likes of Roy Acuff and J.D. Sumner to help me stay strong in this cold-hearted world around me.

Sometimes I wonder what will become of my children, who have never been down south. But I know that my habits and values from those memories, are vivid in their daily lives. Somehow, they may just become half-southern without even realizing how it happened.

The reality of what I crave from this heritage, is old American values frozen in time. That is what the southern lesson is to me. It is the memory of what was, and what I must keep alive each and every day of my life.

Plans for a Special Day at Home

I was sitting in the parlour when the sun came up this morning. It was like a slow burst of gentle light through the drapes. The house is quiet and cozy.

I am sitting here planning all the lovely homemaking tasks I want to do this morning. I only wish I could wake up even earlier each day!

I will make meatloaf for the children to enjoy this afternoon. I will also bake muffins and prepare fudge. I will clean and tidy, while chatting with the children, as they go about their day.

I will play games with my darlings, at the table, and do puzzles. We will play cards and Boggle and checkers. We will sit in our favorite chairs and read books, while sipping on hot chocolate and eating freshly baked treats.

We have taken the day off from formal school to enjoy a precious, unhurried day at home. It will be an ideal day of cheerfulness at our old Vermont estate.

Old Fashioned Home Economics

I want to do an experiment. I want to spend one day, keeping a journal of exactly how much time I spend on homemaking tasks, like cooking, cleaning and laundry. I want to know how much time I waste in idleness. I want to know how much time it takes to do each and every task so I can see what a true slacker I really am.

Yesterday, I put off doing the dishes until later in the day. The house did not look as nice as I would have liked and I skipped my baking plans. Why? Because I didn't feel like doing any of it. Here's the problem - not working, based on a mood or emotion is not acceptable.

Imagine if my husband had that attitude at his job? He would quickly get fired. I cannot believe I don't work half as hard as he does!

What we need is some real old fashioned home economics in our homes. We need to live up to the honored word of "homemaker" or "housewife" and take pride in our hard work!

Today, instead of rushing around in mindless pursuits, I am going to carefully focus on home. I am going to enjoy organizing the laundry room, and washing the dishes. I am going to vacuum and wash the kitchen floor. I am going to have something baking in the oven while I iron. And yes, I will iron something whether or not it is necessary, just so I can get my heart right. It will be rewarding and wonderful.

And all this will be recorded in a little book. So at the end of the day, I can see what was accomplished and how much time it took. Then I will read it over and feel a sense of pride, and relief, that I truly was worthy to be called "homemaker."

A Home with Character

I love strolling through old neighborhoods and seeing the lovely old houses. My favorite place to walk is on Main Street in Hingham, Massachusetts. The houses are hundreds of years old. They are large and elaborate and amazing!

I love seeing wrought iron gates, stately trees and towering windows. I wonder if the people inside are having tea time in the drawing room? Or are they sitting together near the fire, while one of them reads aloud from Great Expectations?

Every day, I strive to make my house look like it has character. But it needs a "keeper" to do all the work. Sometimes I have trouble organizing my time enough to do those little things that bring out the best in this old estate.

So today, I will do a little extra work around here. It will be a work of love - the love of character. Then perhaps, when twilight comes, I will sit near the fire and read from Dickens.

The Old Vintage Hymn Book

The other day, during my homemaking break, I sat down to read my old hymn book. It was published in 1989. Instead of reading (or singing) all the familiar ones I knew, I started reading through the words of new ones.

As I read, I was reminded of when my children were little. I vividly remember Amy (possibly 4 or 5 years old at the time) sitting on the couch, with a hymn book in her hand. She was just sitting there, reading through the hymns. No one told her to do this. It was a precious sight.

Years ago, in my Father's library, I picked up his old hymn book. The cover is tattered and worn. It is filled with old hymns I never even heard of. But the words were so very precious to read!

While I was reading my hymn book this week, I found some very dear words:

A Pink Day

Have you ever looked around your house and thought it was all just overwhelming? I don't mean that it was so beautiful and clean that you were in awe. . . (smiles). . I mean that you were the only creative force, in charge of all the work it takes to make a pleasant home.

We run errands, we care for our families, we do chores. We are tired. Sometimes we need to motivate ourselves by saying something like, "I am going to have a Pink Day!" This means everything around me will be made lovely.

Today, I am going to get to work and make it happen. I am going to be cheerful, smiling, laughing and happy.

I will get dressed up and be the hostess of our home. There will be a "dinner party" at 5 p.m. I will set the table with our prettiest dishes. And even if the dinner bounty consists of take-out, or heated frozen dinners, I know I have done my best to make this a happy place to be!

Breakfast at Home

When our five children got older, they were less likely to enjoy a nice breakfast at home. They were often in a rush to head out the door, or just wanted to sleep late!

Last week, I was watching an old movie, Love Finds Andy Hardy, (from 1938) starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. "Andy" lived in a lovely house in a charming neighborhood. His Father was a judge. His mother was at home. She cooked all the meals and was a delightful, practical homemaker. What intrigued me the most was how the family sat down for breakfast, together, each morning.

The table was set with a sugar bowl and creamer. There were lovely plates, silverware, napkins and coffee cups. The family sat down and enjoyed a nice breakfast together before heading off to work, school, or to start the day at home.

We live in such a rush - rush society today, that I wonder how many families still set a formal table for breakfast?

This morning, I think I will do this. I better hustle and get to work! The family will be awake soon.

Perhaps I will bake fresh muffins and set them out on a bowl, in the center of the table, with a nice linen napkin over them?

The Charm of The Old Days

Looking at pictures of American society from previous generations makes me nostalgic for the old days. These can be any days from the past that are precious, or charming, or pleasant.

Do you remember when people would get all dressed up to go to the store? Or when a visitor would come by the house, and the hostess was already dressed nicely? Girls would get their sweater and take a nice leisurely walk to visit with their guest. They were un-hurried and enjoyed the fresh air without the distractions of modern technology that we, of this generation, have so much trouble trying to control.

These old- day- pictures make me want to find some sewing patterns and make my own pretty clothes. These are classic items one cannot find in the stores anymore.

I also want to get a soda from the soda fountain! Or take a walk through the center of town, stopping at the library for a bit, or getting an ice cream with a friend.

The patience of the old days is astounding. There was not the constant rush to do it all. Moms were generally at home and available for any crisis that came up. These mothers were not overtaxed with too many commitments, or too many projects. They were the slow-paced, enjoy- the- daily- life kind of Mothers who had the energy and will to help when the need arose.

Children who came home to such a place, where Mother was relaxed and happy, were the luckiest children on earth.

I wonder if we can take a little of yesteryear's charm and create some modern nostalgia for the next generation?

Did you Clean Today?

I have been very sidetracked lately. I had every intention of getting up and getting right to my housework, but other things took my attention.

Sometimes I feel like a toddler in a department store, always wandering around looking at all the exciting things and having trouble focusing on what I am supposed to be doing, or where I am supposed to be.

Today, I have to make an extra effort to get right to work on my dishes, laundry, vacuuming and sweeping. I also have to bake and organize.

But first I shall have a little tea.

I never heard of "Christian merchandise" or a "Christian bookstore" until I was married with children of my own. Growing up, there was really no such thing as bumper stickers with a message, or T-Shirts with "follow Jesus" slogans. The rise of marketing Christianity is shocking.

In "Not A Fan," Kyle reaches out to the generation where being a Christian is popular, complete with material goods, and all the right words. This has a tendency to Mask regeneration and a truly committed life to Scripture.

As I read, I felt like a neutral observer, not realizing what has been happening in Christian culture. I was so impressed with this book, I even folded several pages for later reference.

A Mother's Comfort

The Mission House

A Wise Old Mother thought of her house as a mission. She craved the idea of being a missionary for the Lord. So she set about, making preparations.

First, she got rid of most of her worldly goods. She did not want to be overly attached to them, or tied - down by caring for them. She sold what she could, just like the Immigrants sold their household items to pay for their trip to a new land. Well, perhaps this mother took the money to pay off a few little debts, or maybe she gave it to charity.

Second, She organized her daily duties. She wanted to have a list of responsibilities. It was a like a job description for running the mission. These are some of the items on her list:

Morning tasks-
1. Chapel. (This consisted of Bible reading, prayer and the signing of hymns)
2. Prepare breakfast.
3. Clean kitchen.
4. Tidy parlour.
5. Handle correspondence and administrative duties.

Afternoon tasks -
1. Prepare Lunch.
2. Clean kitchen.
3. Do the household laundry.
4. Prayer and Rest.

Evening tasks -
1. Prepare Dinner.
2. Clean kitchen.
3. Chapel (This consisted of Bible reading, prayer and hymns.)

In the midst of all her daily work, she had to greet and welcome guests. She was to work right alongside them. Some of her guests found great delight in the daily labors of the mission house. They were able to talk with her, pray with her, and enjoy a bit of respite from the world.

She also had boarders to care for. These were of all ages, from babies to adults. She had full charge of their care and was quite busy with all their concerns and needs. She found this to be exhausting, but greatly rewarding. She was honored with the "burden," and felt privileged to have them staying with her.

At other times of the day, she would be called away on a mission errand. She was to dress accordingly, knowing she represented the mission house. She had to be an ambassador of that important work and had to be pleasant to all she met. She had grace and dignity and an incredibly strong spirit.

Sometimes, she would walk the grounds of the mission house and enjoy some peaceful quiet, alone with the Lord. This made up for when her time with the Lord was an almost never-ending conversation with the Master of the Mission house - These were prayers and thanksgivings and praises that could not be uttered because of the overflowing joy in her heart.

Last of all, she worked through weariness and became stronger. She worked even when no visible results came from her efforts. She worked and worked and worked, at the Mission House, and made it a shining example of a resting place for weary souls.

But the secret to her motivation, was one quiet morning, as she read this dear quote from a group of "real" missionaries, as they struggled to do God's work in foreign lands:

"O Lord," they had prayed, "Send revival. . and let it start in me." *

Not Shopping

It is Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Many people, all over the U.S. are shopping today.. . Except me. (smiles)

I am home, cleaning, and remembering what a wonderful Holiday we had yesterday.

I don't think I have ever shopped on Black Friday. I love hearing about all the treasures others are able to find, and about how much fun they are having, but I really would rather stay home. I don't even want to shop online, or by phone. I know, that is so un-American of me. But I'd rather not spend any money. I just don't need anything right now.

So I am busy with my decorating and homemaking tasks. It will be a restful, happy day at home.

Later, I will hear about the shopping feats of others. I will be delighted for them. Just like a Grandma who sits at home, resting, eagerly waiting for when the family comes back home. . . Waiting for them to tell her about their adventures in the world.

I will have some hot, homemade beef stew waiting for them. The fire will be blazing in the wood stove. And Mama will be here, as happy and content as ever.

A Cold House on a Winter Day

I have been reading from the old Little House on the Prairie books. I am amazed by the way they lived in the 1800's. Imagine the house being cold until someone starts a fire in the wood stove. Modern heat allows many of us to set a temperature on the dial, to maintain a steady stream of heat throughout the day and night.

In our old colonial house, we have a wood pellet stove. It broke a few nights ago. Mr. White ordered a replacement part and it should arrive any day. In the meantime, I am thinking about how to keep this home a cozy, inviting place despite the forlorn cold. When we walk in the door from errands, we sense an emptiness. There is nothing like a warm fire on a winter day, to gladden the heart. We all miss it.

This morning, it is snowing heavily. I plugged in a portable electric heater to bring us a little warmth. It is in our parlour and should help take off some of the chill. This 14 room house has multiple sources of heat. On the third floor suite, it is always warm. On part of the first floor is where my parents live. They have a real old fashioned wood stove that doesn't break. We can visit with them at any time for some hot chocolate, to hear stories, and to enjoy the cozy stove.

But I love being in my own section of the house - my parlour and my kitchen. I love to clean and tidy and cook and bake. I enjoy listening to old gospel music by J. D. Sumner and The Kingsmen Quartet, while I work. I love to sit in my favorite chair, near the window and enjoy my homemaking breaks.

Right now, I am thinking about Ma Ingalls and how she made her home inviting. The family often battled cold and found ways to bring happiness. Perhaps I will get my yarn and do a little crocheting this morning. I can light a candle on the table to bring the impression of a fire and some warmth. I will also do a little cleaning and bake some brownies.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. All my children will come home. I will gather them around our electric heater and serve hot chocolate. Our stories and laughter will warm up the room and create a pleasant memory, while we wait for that stove part to arrive.

A Great Thanksgiving Resource from Hal and Melanie Young

Book - We Gather Together - Sanity and Celebration at Thanksgiving. (66 page E - book)

Authors - Hal and Melanie Young

This helpful book contains the Young's Thanksgiving menu, recipes, fabulous cooking tips, forms and ideas to make your Thanksgiving go smoothly. You'll also find history lessons and encouragement to help your family make the most of the Spiritual opportunities available on this special Holiday.

I printed out their menu, some of their recipes and their suggested "Order of Events." I also printed out the history lessons. I plan to read some of these to the children during the morning of Thanksgiving, while we we are preparing food, enjoying snacks and waiting for the main meal. I also love the idea of Thanksgiving songs and never even realized this was possible. The Youngs have included some wonderful songs, including "We Gather Together," which has a clickable link so you can hear the song for yourself.

I was inspired by Melanie's menu because it added a simple, loving touch to the festivities. The entire book reminded me of a detailed program for an important event. I loved it!

Here is what I am going to do today, as a homeschooling project with my teenager (currently my only student):

1. We will decorate and design a Thanksgiving Menu.
2. We will create place settings for all of our guests.
3. We will start baking and preparing some of the foods.
4. We will begin reading some of the stories from the Young's book.

The book has inspired a few ideas of my own:

5. I might create a small program booklet for each guest to take home with them.
6. I am seriously considering having everyone sign a guestbook.

As for tomorrow, I plan to use the book as a guide to help make the day extra special. I will read Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation of Thanksgiving (from page 24) and several other selections from the book.

Overall I have never come across such a wonderful resource, and am thankful for the Youngs dedication in putting this book together.

The Kitchen is Ready

I usually clean my kitchen three times a day. This includes wiping down appliances, counters, sweeping and cleaning the sink.

There is nothing worse, when it comes to housekeeping, for the family to wonder why there are no clean dishes. It is a black mark on my record, and makes me look like a slacker in the eyes of my family. Sure, we all have our own chores, but the kitchen is mostly my domain. I am expected to run a clean place because that is my job.

Have you ever heard the joke that when Mom cleans the kitchen, she tells the family they have to eat out because she doesn't want it to get messed up again? (smiles) But there is a better mind-set. Once the kitchen is clean, how about stepping back with pride and saying to the family:

"The Kitchen is Ready."

In other words, it has been cleaned. It is ready for guests. It is ready for anyone who wants to cook or have something good to eat. It is all set!

In this house, no one can clean like Mother. This is evidenced when I am ill and bedridden. Right now, I only have one helper left at home. And he willingly takes over my chores. I often hear his eager voice say, "I'll do all the dishes for you, Mom. You just rest!" And then a few hours later, the same child says, "I did some of the work. Can I do the rest tomorrow?" I just smile...

24 hours later, not only is the kitchen a disaster, but so is the rest of the house. Honestly, I have a hard time cleaning that kind of mess and think it would have been easier to just clean through my illness! (smiles)

But the children really appreciate a hard working mother. They miss hearing me say:

"Hey, you guys... The kitchen is ready!"

They come running from all over the place. They want to cook in a clean kitchen. They make snacks, get drinks and smile with delight.

They always know when Mother is home and well, - Because the kitchen is clean.
