The Retired Life at Home

The Sitting Area

I spent much of the day reading near the fire. The children did their schoolwork at the table. I mused over the delightful writings of Dickens' "Dombey and Son."

Here and there, I commented about the story and entertained the children with quaint sayings and the brilliant use of words.

In the above photo, you will see a kitchen stool near my chair. This is typical for my reading time. I have a wine glass full of ginger-ale. There is a china plate loaded with mini-marshmallows and chocolate chips.

The chair on the left is made of wicker and was given to me, just yesterday, by Nana. She had it sent up in the early evening.  It is very comfortable.

The chair on the right is part of a set of antiques which came with the purchase of our house. It is a stately and dignified chair, if there ever was such a thing!

Do you see my book resting on a small foot stool? This wooden marvel was hand- made by Grandpa, many, many years ago- for my children when they were very young. It is a family treasure.

Now, I must say, if you walked into my home and saw the humble furnishings, you might think we were living in poverty.

I don't agree.

Blessings
Mrs. White

We use a wood stool for a table, also. In the last house we had the typical end tables and coffee table. In this house we have black leather sofas with the stool between the large sofa and the leather chair. We use the ottoman for a coffee table. I put a little lamp on the stool even though we have ceiling lighting. It was my son's idea-he had the stool downstairs in his family's space-we have a 2-family high ranch(2 front doors). I never would have thought of it. PTL

I think I heard of this Dicken's book-on Jeopardy. We enjoyed-Great Expectations-the black and white movie was good, also. I like the language in Jane Austen's-Sense and Sensibility(British Literature as well-for 12th grade homeschooling). The movie with Kate Winslet was great-I cry at the end-every single time I've seen it. These two books in my opinion are the best of Dickens and Austen but I have to read this Dicken's book now. His personal life was strange.

I LOVE old furniture. It gives a house a real homey and inviting feeling. It feels more relaxing. When I walk into someone's housew with very nice things I feel like I don't want to touch anything. Your little spot looks like I could walk in and sit down and prop my feet on the footstool.

I understand what you mean about people thinking you live in poverty when you are, indeed, very rich...the love in your home, in all the forms that it takes, is treasure indeed. It immediately brought to mind Proverbs 15:17..."Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred."

Many blessings,
Lori

It looks very pleasant, and certainly has everything you need. Godliness with contentment is great gain!

I think it's so neat that you "inherited" some furniture when you purchased your house! What treasures must have been found in the rooms, attic, and storage areas! I have a friend who recently purchased an older home, a little bungalow. She found all sorts of treasures in the attic, including some vintage glass Christmas ornaments, glass decanters, and old 45 records (Sinatra and Elvis).

The old furniture is so much sturdier than the newer pieces. That one chair looks like it's make of solid maple, and I'll bet it's comfortable to sit in. Your sitting area looks comfy.

Merry Christmas and a very HapPy new year to you, Mrs. White!!! God bless you and sweet family.

The larger chair looks comfortable and is very stylish. Like the color and design of the material.
A very comfy place to pray, read and sit to think.

I always enjoy visiting your blog and have enjoyed being a bloggy buddy.

You are so blessed to have a large family. I regret that I didn't have the 10 I dreamt of having. I wished I had gone through with more children, but I might have pulled out all my hair. Grins.

Am thankful for my three that I was blessed to raise.

I now enjoy Grandchildren and delight watching them grow. They are amazing and much fun.

Season's greetings to you,
d from homehaven

I just love it when you share photos of your home. You know, we see the magazine perfect pictures all the time. What we need are real life photos of how real life mothers are making their homes in real life conditions that are less than perfect.

Be blessed! I know you appreciate every blessing Father has given you.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Laura Lane
