Pajama School - Giveaway

Book - Pajama School - stories from the life of a homeschool graduate

Author - Natalie Wickham

Paperback, 330 pages

This delightful book was written by a talented author who is a homeschool graduate. She shares her childhood memories of family life, adventures and education.

Here are some highlights:

- She spent part of her childhood in Germany!

- She and her family had lunch with Doug Phillips!

- She and her siblings were charmingly creative and ran several offices (home businesses) in their basement for fun!

- When things got very difficult, and homeschool lessons were harder to finish, real life lessons were learned by all.

- She worked as a Page at the State Capital in Topeka.

I have had the most lovely time reading Natalie's story! I was able to get ideas for my own homeschool. I was also encouraged to see how she turned out! I could relate to the trials her mother experienced at home, trying to cope with new babies, hardship and such, while trying to educate her children.

There was one section in the book, in particular, that greatly encouraged me. Her parents had a system, from the time the children were young, to teach them about money. Some of their ideas are similar to mine, but theirs are even more creative. At one point, I thought her Father was being a little mean, expecting the children to pay for too much, with their own hard earned money! But as she described her growing up years and her experiences with finances, I was greatly relieved and realized how essential a financial education is for our children. Her parents did an excellent job!

Natalie has a sweet, godly heart. I was inspired by her experiences as a graduate. I love how she prayed over decisions. I was encouraged by her shortcomings and her honesty in the things she worked on changing, with God's help. She is a normal person, from a good Christian home. And she has normal trials, just like the rest of us.

The book is written as an autobiography. Her memories and stories are enjoyable, entertaining and informative. I hope she writes another book soon!

Favorite HS memory would be my boys doing action to a poem in First Language Lessons. The guy had a pony tail that he wanted in the front of his head. My boys made a braid out of yarn and tied it to a hat and did the actions in the poem. The funniest part was that the braid was so thick that it looked like a mullet.

My favorite homeschool memory was visiting the prison dairy farm. We got to milk the cows, feed the calves, learn about the processing of milk and of course drink some of the best chocolate milk ever.

I think my favorite home-school moment was when Mom finally got through to me on reading. Something clicked and I have not stopped reading since! :D

I have many, right now, I am loving teaching my 4 year old poems and Bible verses. I fondly remember reciting Bible verses outside on our screened-in back porch, swinging. We have homeschooled out by the pool. I also remember homeschooling around the kitchen table, while the wind blew cold and hard, cold rain came down and I remember that feeling (you homeschool mamas know it) that my babes were safe and dry and we were learning and enjoying the day, so glad they weren't in school or me worrying about their safety getting home in bad weather. SO many precious memories!

My favorite h.s. memory is when my husband asked me how it felt to know that I had taught our daughter to read? Having been a product of public school myself and not learning to read until 3rd grade, having taught my daughter to read in what would be her K/1st grade year was so awesome.

I cant comment about a nice home-school memory, because I wasn't home schooled! But I would like to homeschool perhaps, when my children are older.

It's very hard to think of just one favorite memory, so I will pick my favorite from last school year. I absolutely love it when we are reading a book together and they beg me to go on. I remember a day where I just finished our assigned reading and they would not let me stop! I ended up finishing the book that day and leaving our other subjects to another time. So sweet!

My favorite memory is sharing read-aloud books on the back porch on nice Spring afternoons with a sleeping baby in my arms.

A favorite homeschool memory - Just this week my children were asking questions about an old disney movie and how the artists could draw it all to make a movie, using thousands of drawings with tiny changes. I made the remark that we happen to have a unit study all about cartoons, from newpaper comics to movies, if they were interested in doing it. (Crazy Cartoons Download 'N Go unit study).
My 10 year old daughter looked at me and said, "You can make anything into homeschool, can't you mom?"
It was so funny to see her face as she realized we really could learn about anything at all, and that mommy was willing to follow those interests as they pop up.

I remember the winter that our heater went out. My four children and I would all cuddle up in the living room or on my bed with all our blankets and warm clothes. I'd read aloud for hours. Sonlight books are awesome.

God bless you!

Laura
P.S. I grew up in Topeka.
