Evening Devotions

Evening Devotions at the parlour table at Mrs. White's House.

I love the end of the day when the family can gather all around and have evening prayers.  This can be such a special time of reading the Bible, singing some hymns, and then having a time of prayer.

Our routines will often change as the family grows, or when schedules fluctuate. When the children are little, it is more common that all are home at the same time.  As they get older, they may have evening classes or work obligations. Sometimes Dad may be working a night shift and the family Bible time is better organized earlier in the day. We will often change the routine as needed. But there is nothing like closing out the day with a simple time of Evening Devotions.

How very precious is a habit of evening devotions! If they are generally done at the same time each day, such as at 7 p.m., it produces a stability of a beautiful tradition. No matter who is available at home to participate, it could become a regular routine.

This time of family worship could be just Mother, or many in the family together, depending on who is at home.   It could be a time to read a verse in the Bible and sing one hymn. Or it could be a reading of several passages of Scripture and a few songs to sing.  It may only be a simple time of precious prayer, at the same hour each evening, day after day, week after week, year after year.

Whether it be a brief time of quiet worship or a longer time, it is such a precious spiritual habit that will close out the day with gratefulness and praise to our dear Lord.  When Dad is away from home, or older children are away at that hour, they can know that Mother is at home praying for them during the evening devotions.  This will comfort and soothe weary hearts and help give them spiritual courage.

This is a beautiful way to end each day. ~

[I have added a video, below, sharing our method for doing Evening Devotions.]

Mrs. White,
I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to find this video online...what a treat to actually see you and hear your voice. You did such a wonderful job of explaining the beautiful blessing of having family devotions. And, I love the thought of singing your favorite songs. Your blogs have helped me so much and always seem to soothe me just reading your words. Likewise, your voice and calmness on the video confirms exactly how I thought you would be. I pray God will bless you and your sweet family and I hope you can make more videos...I will be looking for them and new posts each time I get online.
In Christ,
Kay W

I loved this. Our family has trouble doing devotions like this, mainly because the Redneck's schedule is so bizarre He works nights and sleeps days, so the only meal we all have together is lunch during the week. However, reading this has sparked some ideas to be able to have our devotions at lunch time. It's also a bit hard, since my Beloved wasn't raised in a home where they said prayers as a family. I think however, that if I set it up so it is a simple (emphasis on SIMPLE), He will be agreeable to the practice. Thank you for inspiration!

HELLO SISTER: ME GUSTA SU NUEVA PUBLICACION, SI ES TAN CONFORTABLE ORAR, ALABAR AL SEÑOR Y LEER SU PALABRA JUNTOS EN FAMILIA,Y A VECES SOLOS, PERO LO IMPORTANTE ES ESTAR EN COMUNION CON DIOS, LEER SU PALABRA QUE NOS LLENA DE GOZO, DE PAZ, NOS DA ALIENTO PARA SEGUIR EN ESTE MUNDO CON TANTA MALDAD, LLENO DE ODIO, DE SENTIMIENTOS NEGATIVOS, UN MUNDO SIN ESPERANZA, GRACIAS A DIOS QUE SUS HIJOS TENEMOS UNA ETERNA ESPERANZA DE GLORIA. LAMENTABLEMENTE, NO PUEDO TRADUCIR SU VIDEO AL CASTELLANO, ASI QUE NO SE BIEN LO QUE USTED DICE, MI INGLES ES MUY POBRE, PERO LAS PALABRAS DEL BLOG SI LAS PUEDO TRADUCIR, SON DE ESTIMULO, DE EXHORTACION, DE ENSEÑANZAS PARA TODAS LAS HERMANAS EN CRISTO. LAMENTOMUCHO ESCUCHAR LAS NOTICIAS DE LAS MUERTES QUE HAN OCURRIDO EN SU PAIS, TANTO ODIO, TANTA FALTA DE AMOR POR EL PROJIMO, SATANAS ESTA HACIENDO MUCHO DAÑO EN LA TIERRA, SE INTRODUCE EN LA MENTE DE LOS DEBILES Y SIN DIOS, PARA QUE COMETAN ESTOS ACTOS ATROCES, DESVASTANDO FAMILIAS ENTERAS, TERRIBLE Y ME DUELE MUCHO TODO ESTO. ORARE POR LAS FAMILIAS DESTROZADAS POR ESTOS ATENTADOS. BENDICIONES EN CRISTO JESUS.

Thank-you for sharing how your family has devotions together- it is so encouraging! What a peaceful way to end the day and keep focused on the Lord. I also loved seeing you in "person" as I have gained so much from your writings that you seem like a friend:) May the Lord bless you and your family!

You are right, this is such an important daily tradition. My family has improved our evening scripture study and prayer time vastly this year and it has made a big difference in my home!

Oh my goodness, oh so sweet to see your sweet ways and sweet voice. Lovely. And God honoring.

I will show my daughters, and that way they will know the author of the books I have given them in even more of a personal way! : )

Family devotions are valued in our home as well, now most of the time it's just my husband and I too. Where did the time slip by?

You have given some valuable information, it's good basic information that is very helpful.

Thank you for sharing, I know these videos are not easy.

You're a dear, love, ~Amelia

Dear Mrs. White, how wonderful to be able to see and hear you "in person." You are just as lovely as I imagined you would be. We always did devotions in the mornings with our children because daddy came home so late in the evenings. Sometimes I think they were still half asleep ! but they are precious memories. I should pull out my 1828 Webster. I think you're right; there are advantages to looking words up in a book instead of online. xo Deborah
