TJ Maxx in Boston |
I spent all day yesterday shopping with the children. M- (17) needed some clothes and a new winter coat. We went to TJ Maxx in New Hampshire. It was a long drive to get there. Obviously, we don't take many shopping trips, but when we do, we are delighted with our finds.
Early last month, I talked about my Trip to Boston and how I visited the corporate office of Marshalls and TJ Maxx. They provided me with so much information, I felt like an insider while shopping yesterday. As soon as I entered TJ Maxx, I felt knowledgeable. I knew all about their products, their layout and the great treasures I would find.
M- was in the men's department while the rest of the children and I browsed around. I thought about all the things I'd love to buy as gifts. Wouldn't Nana like this? I thought to myself. Or Wouldn't Grandpa enjoy that? There were so many different kinds of merchandise, I would have been thrilled to fill up a carriage with presents. Of course, in this frugal economy, I must be careful. So this trip was for M-. Any other shopping ideas would have to wait for another time!
When I was in Boston, we were asked to participate in a Secret Santa event. I was given the name of another blogger and asked to spend $50 buying her gifts. (I was provided with a gift card to carry out this mission). I was given "Deanna" from Mommy Gaga. I had been able to talk to her for a little while before shopping, so I had a good sense of what she might like as a gift. She is the mother of one young child and is expecting another. I thought she would like some pampering treats. Here is what I selected for her:
![]() |
Shopping at TJ Maxx in Boston |
1. A burgundy cosmetic luggage bag.
2. Fancy scented soaps
3. Bath sets
4. Hot chocolate tin.
5. Assorted Truffles
These gifts were later shipped to Deanna. She received them at home a couple of weeks ago.
Guess what? Someone was also my Secret Santa! I received a package in the mail and it was full of a delightful array of pure white elegance! My Santa was Beth from Home Stories of A to Z.
Beth was so thoughtful, she even included a gift receipt. When I sent her a twitter notice to thank her for the package, she immediately told me to go ahead and exchange the gift if I wanted to. She was so sweet! She is certainly a super gift shopper!
Here is what Beth chose for me (using a gift card provided by TJ Maxx and Marshalls):
White Sweater and Scarf |
Soft, warm winter gloves |
The sweater and scarf are lovely, but not practical for me. I decided to take them to my local TJ Maxx and exchange them for something else. I kept the gloves - they are warm and cozy!
I had to wait until I was heading into the city to make the exchange. Finally, I needed to pick up N- (21) from college, so I drove for 2 hours and stopped at a TJ Maxx on my way to her school. I had A- (15) and J- (13) along to help me. We had so much fun looking through all the merchandise. J- found something he wanted. A- begged for many items. I finally agreed to one. I also chose a couple of gifts for other family members. Here is what I ended up with (using the exchange credit and a small amount leftover from my own gift card):
Presents from TJ Maxx |
1. Purple Leg Warmers with a cute side zipper (A-)
2. Cozy Isotoner Slippers (for me!)
3. Shirley Temple DVD (adorable!)
4. The Bee Movie DVD (J-)
5. Journal with Marilyn Monroe on the cover (A- chose this for her sister N-21)
6. Journal with Audrey Hepburn on the cover (A- chose this for her sister R-22)
7. The last item is my favorite and it was for me. A small box of delicious, delightful, elegant Godiva chocolate!
I have to say, shopping for others is so much fun! I only get to spend money a few times a year, but it is a great adventure to find treasures!
How about you? Would you like a chance to go shopping at TJ Maxx or Marshalls? I have a $25 gift card available for a giveaway. To enter, all you have to do is leave me a comment telling me about a special present you received.

I think a favorite gift that has been very practical and used every day was a mother's day gift for me several years ago. My family bought me a Vitamix. That is very extravagant, but my health issues often require a liquid fast. It is very healthy for me to put fruits and veggies into the vitamix and make a healthy filling drink. My kids also love the smoothies and milkshakes. I'm very thankful each day to have this gift, but I must say the best gift I've ever receieved is the gift of God's love and grace in my life. I don't know where I would be without it.
ReplyDeleteBest present ever was bike one year for Christmas. I "thought" I knew what was going to be under the tree that year so it was the ultimate surprise.
ReplyDeleteOne year on my birthday my husband really surprised me. He gave me a beautiful antique diamond ring. I was wondering why my oldest had the camcorder running, it was a lovely surprise.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you were able to find some things you liked! Merry CHRISTmas girl! Blessings :).
ReplyDeleteOne very special present I received was round way tickets to Europe that my grandparents gave me when I was in college.

Last year on our way home from visiting family, my husband pulled off I-95 at an obscure exit.
Nothing around for miles,
and there sat a lonely
Le Creuset Outlet Store.
He escorted me in and patiently shopped with me
while I chose a new pot.
His gift, my delight.
It is the best pot in my kitchen
and he is the best man in my life.

Hi! Mrs. White,
ReplyDeleteOne of the most special gifts that I have received recently is from my children. My two youngest started their own business of leaf raking, pet sitting, and babysitting. I found out later that the whole plan was not so that they could make money for themselves, but so that they could pay for one night at a Bed and Breakfast for us - just Matt and I. Matt and I have spent many special times at Bed and Breakfasts. We always buy a book from American Historic Inns which has a certificate for a free night. We are able to spend two nights in a cozy inn with great breakfasts for the price of one night. This was a real blessing to me!
My most special present i got was my grandmother's ring when she died. Not only is it very pretty, but I remember her wearing it all the time. I love that ring! eclairre(At)ymail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas present that means the most to me is being given to me this year. It's my parents. I haven't been able to spend a christmas with them in 6 years, and this year they're moving to where I am. I'll get to have a christmas with them for the first time in 6 years. I can't think of a greater gift than that!
ReplyDeleteOne special present came from an internet friend on the other side of the country. She found a difficult-to-find book that I wanted at a garage sale for a quarter and sent it to me. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy first child was born on Dec. 23 and we went home from the hospital on Dec. 25. That was the best Christmas prestent ever!

ReplyDeleteI don't have a really touching present story that comes to mind. Perhaps I'll have one after this Christmas.

The most special gift I received were a dozen irises from my son on his birthday- because he wouldn't have a birthday without me. Tell me- who wouldn't cry over that???? He's 14
ReplyDeleteI receive your awesome email updates. :)
ReplyDeleteI have not had a working keyboard on my netbook for nearly a year. I told dh that I was going to spend my Christmas gift money on a new one and instead he purchased one as a surprise and gave it to me early. He HATES this keyboard but bought it because I really wanted to stop using the external keyboard. :) Happy gift, simple but very sweet.

I have three adult siblings and two live in other states. Last year, we were all together at my parent's house for Xmas and my parents offered to watch our kids and gave us money toward "dinner". A couple nights later we adults and spouses went to Midevil times and had an amazing, memorable night.

Five years ago for my anniversary I received a mother's ring for my anniversary. It contains a birthstone for each of my children. It is special to me.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and son picked it out shortly after our "Miss Ladybugs" was born. While I had admired other mother's rings, I do wish that perhaps we had waited. You see, 2 years after I received that ring, almost to the day, our fifth child was born. I now say that he shares a birthstone with one of his siblings, who shares his birth month. Still, it would be nice to have a ring with five stones and not have to explain that I actually have five children.
