Radio Homemakers

Library of Congress: Almoney family cooking Sunday dinner, 1942.

I found a lovely historic video of radio homemakers from Iowa public television.   There is also a book by Evelyn Birkby, called "Neighboring on the Air."  I just ordered a used copy of this book and I can't wait to read it.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did!

Blessings

My thanks to Iowa homemaker,  Mrs. Hultquist, for help with research!

  1. That was such an inspiring program. How comforting it must have been for all the homemakers to have. These days a homemaker can can walk over to her computer to relate with other homemakers and for recipes but in those days homemakers were more limited.

  2. Mrs. White, you have outdone yourself and I must say this is the best post I have seen/heard in a long time. This is something I never heard of overseas!
When I first came overhere I was astonished to note how lonely some areas were (being a city girl). The endless prairies in particular scared me. I did not mind so much the mountains or the ocean...
I agree with Home on the Rock...The Internet is a lifesaver!
Thank you for sharing and best wishes for a healthy and happy 2012!

  6. This was really neat thank you for sharing. When my children were little we'd listen to a local Christian radio broadcast every evening. It was called "Request Time" and we could write in a request for a children's gospel song or a favourite hymn. The announcer would mention the children's names who had requested the song! (There were 6) During those long ago years my dishes were done so fast so that we could all sit in front of the radio and listen and sing along. Such happy memories this has brought me tonight!
