Library of Congress: The First American Thanksgiving, print from 1914. |
In the quiet of the morning, I am getting ready to do a little work in the kitchen. The sun has not yet risen. We have snow outside here in New England, providing us with a sense of home and happiness at this time of year.
We will be serving a traditional dinner tomorrow of turkey, gravy, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, and bread. Our desserts will include pumpkin pie and a lemon meringue pie. I have cheese and crackers, and some fresh vegetables for appetizers. I will set the table with my best dishes and make it look inviting and special.
There should be four of us for dinner, unless we have unexpected company. Some of my children live a distance away and are not able to travel. So we will visit on the phone and send love and happy greetings in that way. It will be a lovely day of rest and prayer and gratefulness for our food and blessings.
May the Lord bless us and help us to be a light of goodness and kindness all the days of our lives.
From our home to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

ReplyDeleteI have a few of your books and they inspire me to be a more thankful and resourceful homemaker.
This Thanksgiving will also be 3 of us with the traditional cooking. Looking forward to a quiet and peaceful day.
Happy Thanksgiving! To God be the glory!
So enjoy you postings! Blessings to you and yours! Happy THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOUR PRECIOUS FAMILY! I am so thankful for the gift of salvation that was given to me in January of 1976. May our precious Lord give you good health! Marsha Harrup
ReplyDeleteOur Thanksgivings have always been a traditional turkey dinner. When my father-in-law was still alive, he would travel to our house with his other son and my husband’s childhood friend. This was definitely his holiday. However, my favorite memory has to do with my middle child. She once told us that every day was Thanksgiving at our house. We always had a full meal sitting around the table for dinner. It was an eye opening comment. Every day really is Thanksgiving!!
ReplyDeleteThis Thanksgiving my 87 year old aunt will be with us. She is in bad health and isn't saved. We sure have been praying for her. Also here will be my Mama, who is also in bad health, ke my husband, all of my children and their spouses (except my youngest who is not married and just turned 21), as well as both of my brothers and spouses, and my niece and her husband. It sure will be busy for me haha, but such a blessing. I pray you and Mr. White have a blessed Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI am not much of a cook. We have been blessed to have my husband’s step mom enjoy cooking and serving so we go to their home for the holidays. This year it will be just my husband and I going to visit them.
ReplyDeleteI am subscribed to this our email, just not under my google email. Similar email but under hotmail.
ReplyDeleteI will have all my children and grandchildren with us. So grateful as this is rare as they have families of their own. Happy Thanksgiving to you! I would treasure your cookbook!
ReplyDeleteI do subscribe to youtube. I enjoyed your maid tips yesterday! I find I don't have the energy to do my whole house at once any more but that's ok! Never give up!
ReplyDeleteHe’ll Mrs White! Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family. I am looking forward to having all the family to our home this Thanksgiving. It has been many years since everyone has been able to make it to be together. We have much to be thankful for! Blessins to you!
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays! Good food, family time, and a time to reflect and be thankful for all that God has provided! This year we are celebrating at my brother's house. I'm cooking today in preparation for it. I am also having four friends over on Friday for a "Friendsgiving" where I will serve a traditional turkey dinner. Turkey's this year were HUGE - I ordered a 12-13 pound bird and got a 21 pound! There will be enough leftovers for many, many meals (at only .49 a pound I'm grateful for the food!).

ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Mrs. White! God bless!
ReplyDeleteI remember many, many years ago as a child, my mother had the Turkey on the table with a drumstick hanging over the edge of the platter. My German Shepard, Kelly, reached up and snatched the drumstick off the platter. We all sat there stunned. That wasn’t a usual move for Kelly.
ReplyDeleteLet me take the time to mention how much I enjoy your blog and always look for a new post. May the White family have a very blessed and happy Thanksgiving.
Sending hugs,
Mrs. K. Davis
Happy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is the best holiday of the year. My side of the family has so many Thanksgiving traditions (most of them are food related). They have a huge feast, and mean HUGE. Two turkeys, a ham, multiple batches of rolls throughout the day, hundreds and hundreds of homemade candies and confections, a dozen pies... I could go on and on. I have a HUGE family, too, with 7 brothers and 7 sisters and lots of cousins for my children to play with. I'm going to miss being with them this year. We alternate every other year going to my side of the family and my husband's side of the family. This year is his family's turn. I am bringing sweet potato casserole and rolls this year. There will only be a small group of people: my husband and I, our 4 children, one brother-in-law, and my mother and father in-law.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving! We will have five here tomorrow and it will be lovely to see the three extra from far away. Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteI so appreciate your homespun living and sharing your simple ways of bringing warmth and love into your home.
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs. White, I have so much to be thankful for. I have been going through breast cancer therapies since October of last year. I had chemotherapy first, then, a double mastectomy, then 7 weeks of radiation ending on my birthday in June. Now I’m dealing with severe lymphedema from the radiation and I’m taking oral chemo and undergoing hormone therapy. Through the past year I have suffered from every side effect that each therapy offers and have been hospitalized for several of them. BUT…I’ve said all of that to let you and the whole world know that my gracious and loving Savior has been my constant companion and faithful friend through every moment and He continues to bring joy even through the pain. I have grown so much closer to Him this past year and have learned to boldly share His mercy and grace with so many at the cancer center that are going through so much more than I. This Thanksgiving I am blessed to be alive and able to bring glory to Him each day! Thank you for letting me share. A family from church has invited us to their home for dinner tomorrow. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteWe are expecting our four daughters, their husbands and our grandchildren for Thanksgiving dinner along with my 93 year old mom. I am looking forward to seeing all of our family, we have two, four and a half year old little boys, a toddler boy and girl and they definitely add the spice to life. : ) Our fur angels will be in attendance too! : )
ReplyDeleteI have made praline sweet potato casserole, a gluten free spinach pie (almond flour) and gluten free (almond flour) dressing. I also made some stevia sweetened gluten free shortbread cookies. I've made some brown gravy with brown rice flour and onion that turned out so good! My husband will make meat because I do not eat meat, and daughters will fill in with more sides.
I am thankful for our family, God has been good to us and I am also thankful for blogs and youtubes like yours. Where I live here, fellowship is far and few between but that is okay because God sends it as He sees fit in other ways. : )
God bless you Mrs. White, your sweet spirit is a Gift.
There wiil be 12 of us around the table, including both my siblings and their families (including a new Great Nephew). A family friend will also be joining us. And one cousin requested take out. My husband and I have been readying the house. I prepped the Sweet Potato Casserole last night. I have health issues too, so I premade other sides and froze then (stuffing, mashed potatoes); I will put them in the fridge today to thaw. Cooking ahead helps ensure I don't burn myself out before the holiday. Family members are also bringing food contributions for the meal. We're all very excited to spend the holiday together. Happy Thanksgiving, Mrs.White (and all the other readers of this blog)! God Bless Everyone!
ReplyDeleteThankful for a small part of our family and extended family nearby. It was my year to have Thanksgiving in our home; but due to foot surgery a few weeks ago, my son's MIL graciously opened her home for everyone. We'll roast a turkey and I'll make a special cranberry salad/more like dessert to share. Everyone helps with prepping food and sharing. We are very blessed!
ReplyDeleteJust signed up to subscribe. Enjoy your blog so very much. Blessings to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteWe are having Thanksgiving dinner with my mother, age 86. She is making a chicken and a ham, as she dislikes turkey. My husband was disappointed about this, so I am also baking a turkey breast which we will have serve to guests that evening along with a variety of breads, cheeses, fresh cranberry relish and mustards and condiments, pickles, mixed nuts and pies (pumpkin and pecan). We only had to buy the mustards, bread, turkey breast and a couple of different cheeses.
ReplyDeleteWe will open our home to someone who has no family to share the day with and one of our children with her family.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
A very Blessed Thanksgiving to you, your family, friends and loved ones, Mrs. White. So very much to be thankful for and the encouraging words I find on your blog and in your books are truly one of those blessings. We will be have a simple, home made dinner on the Saturday following Thanksgiving for the kids and grandkids that are able to come. It truly is about being thankful for everything. Prayers for God's peace and grace to gently surround you everyday, Karla
ReplyDeleteYour Thanksgiving dinner sounds very lovely. I'm sorry I cant enter the draw, not being in USA, but thank you for offering you book.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and yours! This year it will only be my husband and I as our family are all out of state. We will probably take a walk on the beach and have a cozy dinner later. I’m making apple dumplings today. We have so much to be thankful for, God is good…all the time. Thank you for your posts, Home is so very important.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you, Mrs. White, your family and all of your readers.
ReplyDeleteThere will be five of us this year for Thanksgiving.
Can we all take a minute to pray for those who are not fortunate to have a table of plenty, or loved ones to share it with?
May the lonely and hungry know that whatever their circumstances, they are loved by God. May next year be better for them.
I’m an only child and only have my parents around, no extended family, so we go to their house. We’ll eat and watch Christmas movies. I need to cook and prep today, but my daughter was up all night with an ear infection, so we will also be at the doctor.

ReplyDeleteOur Thanksgiving will be my 2 siblings and their families, our parents and some family friends; 16 people in all! I love reading your blog and your books!
ReplyDeleteWe are having all our 9 children, a couple of the girls' boyfriends and our older neighbor for a late lunch to celebrate Thanksgiving. We will eat traditional food and pies I've been working on the past few days. I'm "drying out" my stuffing right now after putting too much liquid in...sigh. We are looking forward to visiting, playing games, going for walks, and making music.
ReplyDeleteMy parents always invited friends to Thanksgiving dinner when I was growing up and I'm excited to continue the tradition. May everyone have a blessed day!
Dear Mrs. White,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving also! I so enjoy reading your site. My Husband ordered your latest book for me as a Christmas gift! Yea! I am looking forward to browsing it Christmas morning!
God's Blessings,
Kathy in VA
There will be seven of us for Thanksgiving lunch. I will be preparing the food tonight and tomorrow morning. I am so thankful to have my grown children and my mom coming.
ReplyDeleteI have subscribed to the YouTube channel.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to read your book!
ReplyDeleteOur family is small & we have diet restrictions so we never do a traditional meal. There will be 4 of us, 3 adults & a 6 yr old & I'm the only girl in the group! We're making wings, a nice garden salad, fresh berries & apple dumplings. That's it! We'll have a nice flaky biscuit, on per person. We don't usually do dessert but my grandson asked for apple dumplings so I'm making two for the four of us to share. I'll have a little vanilla ice cream to go with it.
We also plan to do a little crafting together. We're making little clay stars to decorate for Christmas. I've dried orange & apple slices. We'll decorate the tree between our meal & dessert. I don't normally decorate for Christmas before December but we're traveling in early December so I I'm taking advantage of having time to do it this week.
I'll add that my husband & I were both born to unwed mothers, raised in chaotic blended homes so though we do have good holiday memories we don't have set traditions beyond making sure we spend time together & enjoy our small family.
I've subscribed to your blog for many years now though I don't comment often. I receive every post through Feedly.

ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving, Mrs. White! Normally, I go to my youngest daughter's in Kansas City for Thanksgiving, but, this year, she and her family are coming here and we will spend Thanksgiving at my oldest daughters house, along with some of the other children and their families, extended family, and friends.
ReplyDeleteThere is much to be thankful for on all fronts, but, today, I am most thankful for the fact that the furnice repair people were able to get parts and fix my youngest son and his family's furnace just before the holiday...like, literally, just got it fixed a few mintues ago. They had been without heat since the wee hours of Sunday morning and it dipped down below freezing last night. They've gotten by with space heaters, but, with four little children, I'm so thankful that they're back in business and all is well.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a beautiful and blessed Christmas season!
~ Rebecca
So much to be thankful for. We are a 3 generation household. I am 79, my daughter 45, who is disabled with several problems both physical and emotional, and my darling 27 year old granddaughter who has Lennox Gestaut Syndrome causing MR,& seizures (mild) she also is non verbal and has CP. I do as much as as I can and really push myself because that is what I feel called to do. Things must get done and at most times I am the only one who can do them. When the pain gets to a tipping point,I just rest and do sitting down chores. The Lord has been good to me. We have enough to get by if we are careful and the smile on my granddaughters face is enough to see a direct line to heaven.
ReplyDeleteI so look forward to your posts as I feel like we are kindred spirits.
Dear Mrs White. This past week, I have been meditating on 1 Thessalonians 5:18…in everything give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. It really is a choice to give thanks for things we don’t prefer in our lives!
ReplyDeleteI am so grateful for the unexpected blessing of having my whole family come to my home (I am a widow) for dinner tomorrow!
My son and family recently surprised me by moving from California to be closer to me. I have another son and a daughter who live far from me, but they have made the journey!
I am believing with all my heart that my family will return to the Lord. He is faithful and doesn’t ignore a mother’s heartfelt prayers.
May I spread the fragrance of Christ as we gather tomorrow…without saying a word. Love never fails.
Thank you Mrs White, for your encouraging writings.
May the Lord shine His face upon you and your household as you gather tomorrow.
~Judy
I'm enjoying a day of preparation for Thanksgiving tomorrow with my family. I am excited that all my grown children, and spouses, will be with us as well, as my 89 year old mom. I love knowing that all the hard work of my family's favorites, like apple pie and all their favorite side dishes will make them feel loved. I probably fix too much, but it is a day of gratefulness and family fun.
ReplyDeleteMy mother died two years ago and she was the main one to do dinner. My cousins and I decided to just meet at Golden Corral this year as none of us have anyone else to cook for. It is much easier. Not as traditional but I will enjoy seeing them.
ReplyDeleteI do miss moms dinner though.
Thanks for the chance to win one of your books.

ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and your family! My mother was my example in learning to prepare and serve a Thanksgiving dinner. We had turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, English peas, dumplings, two or three salads, and desserts. One thing, though, that really stands out was the relish tray. She served pickles, pickled crabapples and celery…..she curled the celery somehow. It was lovely. But now, as I’m reaching an older age, I am a helper rather than a hostess. My son’s family has begun the tradition of inviting both “sides” of the family, and bring whatever my daughter requests for the dinner. Tomorrow I’m taking mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole and pecan pie. I love your blog and i look forward to reading it every time I see the email! I’m now going to check out your YouTube channel! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI am so thankful to have a houseful this Thanksgiving. All my adult children will be here with my three youngest. Next week I have to have kidney surgery so I am especially happy about this holiday since Christmas may be a much quieter day. I enjoy reading your blog so much. It is an encouraging corner when needed and a pleasant reset when my heart strays into too many cares. Thank you for sharing your heart in your writing. God bless you and yours this Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI am subscribed to both your blog and YouTube channel as well.
ReplyDeleteThis year is a bit different from our normal Thanksgiving dinners. My husband had three stents put into his heart today. I will not be able to handle all the cooking this year, but our son is going to smoke a turkey breast and bring some parmesan brussels sprouts. My Mom will make mashed potatoes and gravy and has a pumpkin pie. I will fix plates for my husband and I as we lay low and he rests and recuperates from his heart cath. It's not our usual Thanksgiving dinner, but I am very grateful for my husband being home and doing well. Praise God for our Blessings!

I wish we celebrated Thanksgiving here in Australia! It would be such a wonderful time to spend time with family and count our blessings. We take so much for granted. I am grateful for peace in this country, for a roof over my head, to be able to sleep safely, and for the blessings that family bring. Enjoy your special time with family Mrs White, regards Robyn
ReplyDeletewe had a lovely thanksgiving with my youngest son and his family. can only hope yours was as nice. thank you for the consideration.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteGod has given me so many blessings. All the wonderful ladies on the internet blogs and their comment sections are part of those blessings.
ReplyDeleteEveryone was able to make it to Thanksgiving. We were missing our nephew, who is serving our country, and we were missing our sister, who lives in another state. Everyone's phones were put away and that allowed everyone to interact with each other more than some other times. And it was good!
We had a delightful celebration with 18 family members joining in the festivities at our home. It was a unique Thanksgiving because my 2 year old grandson has been with us for 5 days now since his parents welcomed a new baby boy on Monday. Now I have two grandsons, so much to be thankful for!

ReplyDeleteWe had a lovely day at our daughter's home. There were 12 of us including my husband and me, our daughter, her hubby and four kids (3 teens and a 9-year-old), plus our pastor, his wife and teenage daughter, and an older single man from our church.
ReplyDeleteWe all shared in food preparation and our grandchildren pitched in with food prep and cleanup as well, so it was a fairly relaxed day. Amazing food, good fellowship, and lots of laughter. A truly wonderful day of joining together to praise God for His many blessings.
My childhood Thanksgivings were lovely. I have written about them at my kitchen table blog. Usually a big family dinner at my grandmother's farmhouse. But we were not believers back then, and although we knew to thank God for the food, we did not know Him personally nor understand how very much we had to thank Him for.
And I've recently subscribed to your YouTube channel.
ReplyDeleteI am very excited for your new cookbook. I have a couple of your other books and they have blessed me.
ReplyDeleteIn total we had four Thanksgivings to attend to this year, which is the usual. I hosted one early for our family and my mother, aunt, and sister. I spent a few days cleaning things that get overlooked like the appliances and baseboards. All and all, the day was comfortable and the meal was delicious. The following Sunday we had our church Thanksgiving luncheon. I was asked to bring a dessert so I brought a fancied up chocolate cake. Our third Thanksgiving was actually on Thanksgiving day with my in-laws. My father in law, who was the head of the family passed away just two years ago and we still miss him very much especially around the holidays. I made his favorite dessert, apple dumplings. The last and final Thanksgiving was a super quick stop at my aunt’s on the way home. This is my father’s sister so I did see him there along with my step-mother and two brothers. I got to hold my newest nephew for the first time, that was one of the highlights of my day. This aunt has a big yard so we ended the day with my boys having a foot race through the front yard, my favorite ❤️. God is good.
I spent Thanksgiving with my daughter. Our meal was simple but delicious. We played board games and watched a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I was thankful for the time together, for food on our table, and for faith. I am also thankful for you! You're my favorite homemaking author. I am a YouTube and blog subscriber and have several of your books. God bless you and your family!
ReplyDeleteHello Mrs. White :)
ReplyDeleteI am sitting down the day after Thanksgiving, sipping on Theraflu. Half of our family was sick over the holiday week and since I kept my grand babies on Tuesday, naturally I became sick too. But we are all on the mend, so I thought I would visit your blog and see what comforting posts you had to offer. As always, I was not disappointed.
I would love to win a copy of your book to add to my collection of your other titles. Either way, thank you for your generosity. I know someone will be blessed by it!
I am looking forward to your latest YouTube video :)
Blessings,
Debbie
Hello Everyone! This year was a very simple Thanksgiving for my family. I am a young homemaker with 7 children ranging from ages 15 to 4 months! When I found out Mrs.White published a cookbook I was discouraged because we are currently living in a hotel. I have most of her books in storage and planned on purchasing the new cookbook whenever we got settled. I was intimidated by all the giveaway entries but I am compelled to enter anyway. I believe having that cookbook here with me will serve as a little source of encouragement during our stay. We as wives and mothers can make our families comfortable anywhere as long as we are pleasant to be around. We can even do little things that add touches of home when we are on the road. The Lord alone will be our strength and song. I would be so excited to win the giveaway. I can be contacted via email. My name is Mrs. Collins and my email address is bcollinsbydesign@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI subscribe d to your blog and YouTube channel. Shared on Facebook. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving is always a favorite holiday for me I am so thankful for God's blessings every day. It seems like in this day and age Thanksgiving is almost forgotten and made to be a day just for eating turkey and watching football and preparing for Christmas shopping. It always irritates me greatly to hear people call Thanksgiving "turkey day". There is much to be thankful for and God is good every day! This year I will be able to spend the day with three of my grandchildren and my son and his wife. As the famous Thanksgiving hymn says: Let all things now living, give praise and thanksgiving' - a hymn I played on the psaltery this morning for our church music program.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your blog, Mrs. White.

Thank you for your lovely post! I cooked dinner with all the trimmings for 13 people, then had to transport all the food to a family member's house to eat it because my son became sick at home. The bonus was I could just concentrate on cooking and not on tidying up the house!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much to everyone who entered this giveaway. I loved reading about all the things you are thankful for and your plans for Thanksgiving!
