An Ordinary Christmas Dinner

Christmas painting by Charles Green, 1896. LOC

One of the most difficult things to accomplish in the home is not the cleaning, the cooking, the shopping or even managing the finances. The most difficult thing we must do is to make sure our homes are happy.

A major undertaking is to understand relationships, manners, dealing with moods and trials and how to remain graceful and kind through it all.  Part of this work involves the planning and organizing of birthdays and holidays. These are such special times and can be filled with such warmth and joy. There is effort and work that must be done, with patience and flexibility.  We need to be able to manage the day, knowing (and expecting) there to be distractions and annoyances. If we seek a calm heart focused on the Lord, it is very possible we can cheerfully accomplish the goal without troubled or stormy seas. The goal, of course, is happiness and peace despite any difficultly. This can only come from the source of all peace and that is from the dear Lord.

Christmas is in just a few more days. Some will be travelling. Others are expecting guests. Many will be home alone or with just one or two others. In each case, we can plan to make it pleasant and a special day!  In our house, I am serving an ordinary Christmas dinner. There will be mashed potatoes, peas, rolls, and chicken.  The beauty will be in the way the table is set and how nice the candles will look during the meal.  I will make the day special with little touches of service with an understanding of the need for comfort and rest for those in this household. There will be Christmas music in the background. Later I will play the piano for just a little while, in the downstairs living room. I do not think we will have anyone visiting but I expect to see grown children and grandchildren during the coming week.  I am grateful.

May this wonderful season of home and family be a peaceful time of good memories. May it provide us with a sense of thankfulness for all the Lord does for us this Christmas day and always.

Blessings

  1. It is very good to be reminded of this. It has been a very busy season for myself and my family. Sometimes, I worry that it will be gone before I know it, and I will not have been able to savor the season. Your post will help me to keep this in mind. I am working on my cleaning today and will assess if there is any last minute food items that I need to pick up tomorrow. I will start some food prep on Tuesday. I know my parents are coming Christmas Eve and maybe a couple of other family members.. not sure. I plan on making some roast beef, carrots, mashed potatoes, rolls, and a cheese cake. I probably will not be making any cookies or Christmas candy this year. There is usually more food around than we can eat and I don't want this year to be one of waste. With that being said, I am now getting my self in the mind set to help bring forth a Christmas of joy.

  4. Thank you so much for this reminder, Mrs. White. I don’t often comment but I am always excited to see a new post (and often revisit old posts or reread the books I have of yours when I need to refocus and regain peace when things get chaotic). This Christmas I just wanted you to know what an inspiration you are to me; I look up to you and have learned so much in the decade or so since I stumbled on your blog. I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas!

  7. Our Christmas here on the farm will also be simple and quiet. Up here in northern Minnesota traveling during December can be very iffy due to the weather. Most years my family gets together at Thanksgiving and that is usually our "Christmas". Travel at that time is still mostly good. When a person has Jesus in daily life, every day seems like Christmas. I truly enjoy the message, the peace, and the music of Christmas. It matters not what we eat when it is shared with loved ones.
May you and everyone have a joyous and blessed Christmas.

  9. God bless you and your loved ones as we rejoice in the gift of Christ our Saviour. We're having breakfast with a daughter and her family, then the rest of the day will just be hubby and I. It will be a lovely day all round...though we are forecast to have a monsoon (flooding rains here in the Tropics) and the chance of a cyclone forming. How blessed we are to have a home, and supplies in the pantry - God is good!!
    Merry and Blessed Christ-mas. xx

  10. Christmas Greetings, Mrs. White and everyone:). My husband and I will also be “we two”, our daughter away with her fiancés family in NY. I’ve planned a similar meal to yours but with a pork roast from my freezer. We’ve been listening to our local oldies radio station non-stop since they started playing all Christmas music. We’ve got book piles ready, as well as the backgammon board. I’ll read my Bible, Dickens, Louisa May Alcott and Washington Irving, which I do every year. I love celebrating Jesus’ coming and how much light He brings to my life every day. Blessings to all:).

  11. Merry Christmas to you and your family Mrs. White. Over the weekend we had two loved ones pass away within days of each other. I'm trying to keep my focus on Christ amidst the sadness. I always enjoy your godly wisdom.

  14. Merry Christmas to the White Family! Your ordinary meal and atmosphere is not so "ordinary" at all! Where love abides, the presence of Jesus is welcome and overflows.
