Family Feasts for $75 a Week - Book Giveaway

Book - Family Feasts for $75 a Week by Mary Ostyn

Mary Ostyn is the mother of 10 children and blogs at Owlhaven.net. Her book is packed with 200 recipes and helpful tips. The book is described as "A Penny-wise Mom shares her recipe for Cutting Hundreds from your Monthly food bill."

The first part of the book includes information on:

1. Giving you a dream - What would you do with an extra $100 a month. Mary explains that when we have a goal, or plan, with that saved money, we will work harder to be frugal.

2. We get to "go shopping" with her. She takes us through her method and shows us what it's like on her shopping trips.

3. "Guerrilla Shopping" - Getting the best prices and using a price book.

4. "Efficient Cooking, Good Eating" is where Mary goes into the details of meal planning.

You'll also find tips, charts, cartoon-type illustrations, action points and thoughts. There is even a fun quiz in chapter one!

The recipe section includes:

1. Breakfast and Lunch
2. Casseroles and Oven Meals
3. Stir Fries and Skillet Meals
4. Perfect Pasta
5. Soups, Stews and Chilis
6. Sides and Salads
7. Breads, Muffins and Desserts

Extras

1. Entertaining on a Budget
2. The Homemade Pantry
3. Metric Charts
4. Index

Mary has 10 children ranging in age from 3 to 20. She knows what it's like to feed a large family on a small budget. Yet, she also knows how to make it enjoyable and not feel like deprivation.

I am always looking for ways to cut our grocery budget!

I always shop sales with as many coupons as I can. But I also shop the clearance. Yes, the items have to be used up quickly, but the prices can't be beat.

My favorite frugal shopping method is to stock up when our local grocery store runs everyday needed items on sale at the price of 10 for $10. Often they will have butter at that price and I can freeze it. Same with hot dogs, lunch meat and other items. I would love a copy of this book for the recipes! Reach me at becmom45@aol.com

If I get picked, pick someone else because I already own this book and I just want to say it is terrific, and has helped me save lots of $$. For those who don't win the book, it would be worth saving some grocery budget money to buy it; you would recoup your investment by putting Mrs. Ostyn's strategies into practice.

We buy rice and anything else we are able to in bulk or by the case.

For me, planning is key. Just hosted my parents' 50th anniversary. I planned the menu months ago and have been watching for sales of items I would need. I buy things we use frequently when on sale. My next essential is to not waste anything. This is harder for me, but I'm working on being sure to find a way to use any leftovers. Sounds like an awesome book!

I like to use my calendar, have the family tell me what they'd like for supper, then arrange it in our schedule, make a list, an only buy the ingredients for that list. We use leftovers for lunch, soups, oatmeal. :)

I shop for all but fresh produce and milk once a month - save me lots!

Entry:

I keep a list, with a running tally of what I've put in my cart. I have a strict budget, so adding up as I go keeps me from going over.

I shop in the bulk food section for things like spices, flours, sugars, beans, pastas.

I stopped buying cereal and started cooking breakfast. I'm saving a ton on snack foods, which I no longer buy.

There's more, but I'd develop carpal tunnel if I typed it all out. ;-)

Thanks for this giveaway, Mrs. White!

I plan on reading through all these comments! Our way of doing it has been to start relying on Costco more. We've been picking up the things we go through all the time (granola bars, fruit snacks, eggs) at Costco. Saves me from running to the more expensive/more convenient store as often. It's a work in progress but so far it's been working.

Hi Mrs. White, thanks for the fun contest/giveaway!

I try to shop with a list, and stick to it. Also, I like to plan a meal that becomes a second and third meal, like if I find a good price on a roast, the leftovers can become part of a casserole, or soup. Potatoes, cheese, and green veggies/carrots/mushrooms/etc. can make a little bit of beef go an awfully long way!

OK, that's my basic, single entry...on to the next!
Blessings,
IllinoisLori

I don't use coupons. We have a list on an index card at all times in the kitchen that I take with me shopping. I love index cards. I don't bake in the summer and I read Jordan Rubin's health/nutrition books.

Hi! My favorite frugal homemaking tip (I have so many favorites it is hard to choose!) must be weekly menu planning...everything from all 3 meals and snacks...it really helps me use what is in my pantries and freezers, and make sure our diets are balanced and healthy. Thanks for this giveaway! I can be reached at proverbs31momx4@msn.com Have a blessed Christmas! ~Sue~

We take advantage of sales and coupons, and I use the website www.southernsavers.com to prepare my grocery store lists (and to print coupons). I know what is truly cheaper to purchase at our local Sam's Club and supplement our grocery store purchases with Sam's.

We eat simpler meals, highlighting healthier food options.
