LOC: Howard family moving into their home in 1937, Alabama, |
We are facing uncertain times. With an election looming over us all, many are worried or on edge. There are so many unknowns. There is division among neighbors and friends. It is not an easy time. In the midst of all that is happening, we need to keep home a safe and restful place.
There is an art to keeping house. It is something we need to practice every day. There are home duties that keep our minds occupied. They bring a calmness to the heart.
Do not let the troubles of the world distract you. There are dishes to wash, dinners to cook, laundry to do, and floors to sweep. While we are working to maintain a pretty and clean home, the family is blessed by our efforts. They will think to themselves that, regardless of what is happening on the outside, home is another world! It is their refuge where they draw strength to face each day.
While the world seems to be falling apart, Mother is creating a beautiful place to be. It is a valuable and much needed work!
Home is where we can rest and enjoy the comfort of nourishing food. It is a place to pray and meditate on Scripture. It is a place where old hymns are cherished. This is where the family finds care and love.
When one of the family walks down the lane, at the end of the workday, there is a light in the window, showing that someone is home. There is a glow of warmth from the lamp. It soothes the mind to see a vision of home. At the end of a hard day, battling the ways and worries of the world, home is a welcome retreat. It is the place for weary souls to find peace.
Let us not worry about all the troubles around us. Stay on the task at hand. The work before us will be the same every day of our lives, regardless of a corrupt world surrounding us. Build up the family every moment of every day. Keep the home a calm and restful place.
We do our part, and then we must remember that the Lord reigns over all. It is not for us to worry. Do not let fear overcome you. Rest in the Lord. Keep your mind and eyes on Him. Let every step be near Him. All will be well. The Lord is good all the time.
Blessings

A very timely and beautifully written post! I agree wholeheartedly! Truly the only thing a Christian homemaker can do in these discouraging times is to make the home a haven of safety, peace, happiness and order. I simply cannot listen to or read any news media now because it is so horrible. The values spewed out by the media and by politicians does not align at all with my biblical values. I fear very much for next week after the election, hoping that violence will not be all we see. I know that the Lord is in charge of all. I know that I am where He would have me to be. This is all I can do - just try to keep a happy well ordered home, taking care of my husband and family and being a good example of a Christian homemaker. Proverbs 31 and Titus 2 outline how a Godly woman should strive to live. The world may be crazy and our nation completely divided beyond repair, but our home should reflect God's word and His commandments.
Yes, Mrs. White, our homes should be havens for calm and refuge each and every day, because the outside world is doing its best to tear families apart and to bring worries upon us when we should trust in God instead. May we provide that peace for our loved ones with God's help.
Blessings always!
This is a comforting and timely read! When we keep our minds and our hearts on our homes and families, we are blessed because of our obedience to God. No matter what’s going on around us, when we continue on in our daily routines and chores, that’s a beautiful example of how our Heavenly Father continues daily watching over us and keeping us. Thank you so much Mrs. White.
Amen. Wonderful encouragement for this time. xx
Wise words. During the worst times of the pandemic I often felt that our home was a lifeboat afloat on very stormy waters and that feeling has never completely gone away. The election is frightening and not just for folk in the US. The whole world is watching with baited breath.
You echo my thoughts completely on the importance of home, Mrs. White.

Oh it is really important to keep home private. I worked full time outside the home and coming home to my own sanctuary was so important. When the grandchildren come, we can have meaningful conversations. and giggles. People also like to gossip. I hate that and just stay away from it all.
It makes me so happy when I read your words. Thank you taking time to write:). Fall is such an exciting time in our house. My sourdough starter has bounced back to life for the 5th year, bringing us a new addition of pumpernickel bread! Wonderful trying new things mixed with old stand bys. At my annual, I was worried about the doctors usual question about outdoor activity and exercise, lol, because I don’t go out too much, but I prattled off a list of all my home projects of applesauce making and bread baking and she deemed me very healthy indeed:). It was nice to have someone in “the world” appreciate the time, energy and care this life takes. I hope this note finds you rested and your patient getting well!
That's exactly how I feel about my home, even though there is only me living in it now. It is still a place that I want to make welcoming to friends and family. As a child I remember the happiness of seeing my home lit up and my mother waiting.
