I wanted to put together a book that would encourage the beauty of a peaceful home-life. It was to be about simple and frugal living. There was to be a sense of old-fashioned charm while remembering the blessing of being a precious child of God.
After a great deal of work and planning, the book is now ready!

There needs to be a place where one may go to find rest and comfort. It should be a retreat from the troubles of the world. It should be loved, well-kept, peaceful and welcoming. This is the place where a Christian homemaker can do noble work.
At the same time, this way of life is nothing new. It is an old-fashioned way of life that is commonly called, ordinary. Yet, how wonderful it can be to live simply in an ordinary way!
In this book you will find encouraging essays about life as a New England housewife. There are 33 articles, essays, and diary entries which have been compiled from the last year of this blog.
Some of the chapter topics include:
Preparing for winter, managing money on a limited income, making the grocery money last, mending and sewing, courtesy and kindness, gardening, taking care of children, enjoying the beauty of nature around us, leaning on the Lord with gratefulness, and daily life at home (from a housewife of 38 years).
Throughout the book you will find 15 devotional quotes from 1912. These were gleaned from the book, "The Home Beautiful" by J.R. Miller. I call these portions, "advice from a minister." Each one is full of practical wisdom about marriage, the beauty of our surroundings, and the precious care of children.

There are several (black-and-white) historic photographs in the book. These are of home and family life during the 1920's - 1940's.

"An Ordinary Housewife" is designed to give you a sense of rest and encouragement.
The cover photograph was taken some years ago, when I visited the historic Lincoln mansion in Manchester, Vermont. It is the corner view of a bedroom which was designed for the Lincoln grandchildren. The image exudes a quiet sense of peace and rest, in a home where love and security are offered to the family.
As you read the devotional quotes by the minister (J. R. Miller) about pleasant amusements for the home, getting along in marriage, being a good housekeeper, and much more, I hope you are greatly encouraged and blessed!
The historic photographs add a touch of warmth and inspiration.
