Coming Home to Roost by Dorcas Smucker - Book Review

I was very interested in reading a new book by Dorcas Smucker. It is called, "Coming Home to Roost" and is published by Muddy Creek Press.  It is a collection of essays about her life and family.

Dorcas grew up in an Amish home. She is married to a retired Mennonite pastor and has six grown children. She is also a writer and speaker who lives in a farmhouse in Oregon.

The book contains insights on mothering adult children and brings readers a sense of relief when they see that we all go through similar worries and struggles.  Her essays are like letters from her life. Some of what you will find in this book include:
 

- Her experiences in writing and traveling.

- She shares about being poor at times in her life. 

- Her relationship with her parents, husband, and children.  Her understanding of communicating and being there are very helpful.

- Some of the differences she's observed of the Amish and Mennonite ways of living. 

- The different paths and interests of her children. It was like hearing from an old friend catching up on all the family news.

- Her love of Church and Ministry is wonderful to read about.

 

  The book is paperback with 166 pages, and available from Muddy Creek Press.
