The Virtue of Silence

Painting by Adriana van Ravenswaay,1872.

The world is full of gossipers, people who talk about others and don't keep to their own affairs.

The world is full of reality. There is no discretion.

The world is laden with careless, thoughtless discussions which bring nothing but idle pain.

The world is full of arguing and always wanting to be right or to win.

The world is full of people who are not loyal to friends and family and share things they ought not.

Yet there is virtue in silence.

Blessed are the meek. Blessed are the peacemakers.

There is virtue in silence.

The art of dignity and privacy are virtues we need to cultivate.

Blessings,
Mrs. White

I LOVE today's post. This is one of life's greatest lessons in my opinion, because NOT being silent in so many situations can bring so much trouble. It's better to remain silent than to later regret having said anything.

As I really try to consciously be that silent, meek, praying instead of talking person, I find that God, more and more, quiets my tongue (or, more often, my typing fingers). WHEN I obey and be still/silent, I'm SO glad that I did! :) This post reminds me of your one on Mother's Rose-Colored Glasses. I think of that often... :)

My homemaking link-up weekend is going on now and I'd love to have you participate!

Have a great weekend!

This is such an encouragement to me today. Many times, I find that my tongue feels literally tied up and later I realize the impropriety of what I had wanted to say. I, too, believe the Spirit helps in this area when we seek Him.

We often, though, think we have to speak - to fill the silence - because people tend to either feel uncomfortable or think you're a weirdo for keeping silent. Oh well, guess I'd rather be a weirdo than live with regret from careless words. :)

Thank you for sharing!
