Summer Heat in Rural Vermont

The Back grounds of Mrs. White's property here in Vermont.

The summer heat has been very difficult this year.  We live in the beautiful mountains of northern Vermont. But we still have some very warm days.  It has frequently been in the 80's.  I don't think I could handle living in Florida or in Texas where, I am told, the heat gets to be in the 90's and 100's. We recently had some missionaries come to speak at our church. They live in Texas and told us the work they are doing there.  They briefly described the heat and told us it is much cooler here in Vermont!  It gave me a grateful perspective.

To keep cool here at home, I close the blinds in certain rooms throughout the house. This blocks the heat of the sun.  Our upstairs parlour has burgundy, sheer, curtains.  The sun comes gently through this to give us natural light.  But the strong heat of the sun is lessened. It also makes the room look extra peaceful and comfortable.

When we walk towards the river (bordering our back property) there is a coolness in the air that is refreshing.  We also have many shade trees.  But I can only take so much time outdoors during hot days.

I love having box - fans in our old windows.  This brings much fresh, cool mountain air into our home.  It keeps us comfortable.

It usually cools off in the evenings and when there is an occasional rain.  There is nothing like the beauty of rain glistening on the trees and lush green landscape here in Vermont.   The beauty keeps us grateful.

I know that our bitterly cold winters will arrive very quickly.  We start preparing for the cold season in spring and work diligently throughout the summer months.   The Old Farmer's Almanac tells us our first frost date is in September.  There is often a bit of a chill as early as August, here in the northeast.  This is why I am enjoying the hot summer days as much as I can!

Blessings
Mrs. White

Hello!
Always happy to see a post from you.
We are enjoying a lovely summer here in the mountains of Pennsylvania, although this weekend is going to be very warm. I do not enjoy those high temperatures, and try to stay inside as much as possible! We are having a thunderstorm right now, and are all cozy inside. Have a lovely evening!

In my part of Pennsylvania, it will be feeling like 105 today...and tomorrow too, I think. I am grateful for air conditioning...but this heat pretty much keeps me house-bound..which I do NOT like.

Your Vermont summers sound very much like our northern Minnesota summers. We, too, live in a mostly cool climate, so when the temperatures do get into the 80's and 90's we are all very uncomfortable! We don't have air conditioning either and we also use ceiling fans and box (floor) fans to cool things off. But we know that these temperature extremes only last for a couple weeks for us! After all, it IS summer, and soon we will be looking at snowfall again. We must enjoy what the Lord gives to us. Meanwhile I am enjoying the start of canning season again.

We had a heat index of 108 here yesterday in Michigan. Other than going to the grocery store, I stayed in all day. I, too, keep the blinds and curtains closed when it's this hot as most of our windows are on the west side of the house. A cool breeze off your river sounds lovely.xo

Hello Mrs. White~ I enjoyed your post today. If I may share an old time tip that has helped me many years living in Ohio (before we moved to Colorado). When we lived in Ohio I needed to find ways to cut costs since the air conditioner was so expensive to run. After much reading and digging through old homemaking books I found these tips:

* As a homemaker, they would take down their curtains before bed and dip them in a tub of water. Wring out the excess just so it doesn't drip then re-hang. Open your windows and the breeze evaporates the water and your room is MUCH cooler because of this. I would also take a squirt bottle of water and spray the curtains well so I didn't have to take down the curtains as women of the past had done.

*Also with a squirt bottle, spray your top sheet just before bed. The coolness is lovely and the water evaporates through the night. Some nights I would keep they bottle by the bed to squirt our sheet again.

Just some ideas I had learned from the past.

Have a lovely weekend.

Wishing you God's peace,
Mrs. Dee Peterson

Oh my, this sounds heavenly having some cooler air coming from the river. Our heat index today has hit 111 degrees. I went to the store to get some vegetables and no longer than I was in the heat I was dripping with sweat. Not a pretty sight! ha. If we get a frost in September that will make for a very long Autumn/Winter so I had best enjoy the heat as well. I always enjoy visiting your place in blogland.
Blessings to you,
d

Your mountain area sounds refreshing compared to our SC heat and humidity. Whenever I feel like complaining about the heat I think of our oldest daughter's family who are missionaries living in a big city in Europe in a third floor apartment without air conditioning. It is very hot in their apartment most days. Thankfully this summer they were able to purchase a fan. Last summer they could not find one in the stores.

I've always wanted to visit Vermont. I live in the Deep South, and it has been in the high nineties lately. So ready for fall!

Bless you lovely lady, I hope you stay cool. Here in Texas, we have been blessed so far this summer, no triple digit days. I love the heat, but my beloved Redneck is the type to start looking for the air conditioning if the temperature rises above 60 degrees. I confess, when it looked like we were going to move to New Hampshire last year, I was dreading going through one of your winters. The only type of weather that gets to me is when it just keeps raining, and I can't get outside to do anything. I enjoy a nice rainstorm occasionally, because then it's a break from working outdoors and feels cozy. But six days straight of rain and thunderstorms just gets old after a while! God bless you, stay well.

Billie Jo,
I hope you are able to stay cool. It is lovely to stay indoors and stay cozy during thunderstorms.

Lynn, It sounds very hot there. I am happy to hear you have air conditioning. I hope it gets cooler soon so you can go out and about.

Patty, I often thought (from reading your blog) that our weather in summer and winter are very similar to yours. Box fans are so helpful. I hope your canning is going well.

Deborah, your heat sounds very difficult! I hope it cools off soon. Yes, the cool air from the river is a blessing!

Mrs. Dee Peterson, I enjoyed reading your old time homemaking tips very much. Those are good ideas!

Deanna, It sounds unbearably hot there! I hope you are staying cool and that your health is very well.

Lana, your description of your daughter's apartment in Europe makes me extra grateful for our fans. Thank you! I hope her fan is keeping her cooler now.

My Cozy Book Blog, I love the southern culture. I hope you are staying cool. Vermont is a beautiful place. Fall will be so pretty here.

Evelyn, It seems to be staying hot here, longer than usual. It has been difficult. I cannot imagine the Texas heat, but good to hear that it is not too bad for you. The New Hampshire winters would have been an enormous change for you. Very pretty, but very cold! I know what you mean about not being able to go outside and how hard that can be. I feel that way in the middle of winter here! God bless you!

"Serving the Lord," I had to translate your message into English and am so grateful to hear from you! We do not normally get a lot of heat here in Vermont. There are usually many cool days. But yes, it is freezing in winter! I hope you are enjoying your winter season there in your country.
