One of the historic houses in Plymouth Notch, Dec. 2024. (Aldrich House) |
There is an idyllic village, hidden away, in a rural town in Vermont. This is a place I have seen in the summer but always wondered what it looked like at Christmas-time in winter.
A few days ago, there had been a snowstorm during a necessary trip. On my way home, I realized we were only a few miles away from Plymouth Notch, Vermont. This is the location of a historically preserved village from the 19th century. There are houses, barns, and a country store, as well as a one-room schoolhouse in a scenic location. It is surrounded by hundreds of acres of land. The site is a museum that is currently closed for the season. However, the streets are open and one can drive or walk around as one likes. Will you walk along with me?
The road to enter the village. |
I parked the car in a safe location and went out into the cold winter air. I knew my way around since I had already been here a few times.
Beautiful winter scene as we wander up to the village. |
As we enter the small village, we see a large barn. (It holds a stagecoach and sleigh, among other necessary items.)
The barn is part of the museum and is closed for the season. |
Across the road we see the old country store. This was owned by the father of Calvin Coolidge during the 1800's.
The old country store is part of the museum. |
Directly across from the store is the Aldrich house (see the photo at the top of this post). The family used to operate a tea-room in their home to meet the needs of tourists who came to see the Calvin Coolidge homestead.
Side view of the Aldrich house, with attached barn and sheds. |
The Aldrich house is part of the museum and is closed for the season. Just a short walk down the road will bring us to the Calvin Coolidge homestead.
Distant view of the side of the Coolidge homestead. |
Across the street from the Coolidge home is the village church. It is beautiful to see in all seasons, but especially surrounded by snow in this charming Vermont village.
Scenery from the street as we get closer to the church. |
The village church remained open for services for many years. It is now a museum and is being carefully preserved and maintained.

As I walked around the peaceful village, I was surprised to see the buildings decorated for the Christmas season. It is clear that the museum staff takes excellent care of the village throughout the entire year. The snow adds to the charm of this quiet place as we remember days before automobiles. This was when families were more likely to stay home in the winter months. This was a time of thrift and simplicity and a love for old time values.
If you would like to see some of the rooms inside the homestead, and the other buildings during the summer months, I have several pictures and details of family life in my recent book, "Seeking a Thrifty and Simple Life." (You will find this in the field trip section of the book.)
I had such a restful time walking around this beautiful village. It is one of my favorite places, here in Vermont. I hope you enjoyed visiting with me. Be sure to sign the guest book (by leaving a comment) to let me know you visited. (Your comment will enter you in the giveaway!)

What a beautiful village! So exciting to see all the snow! Have a wonderful Christmas season!❤️
Thank you for the beautiful snowy pictures in Vermont. I live in central NC and we have not had snow in years.
I love your blog and your books, they have both been such a true blessing to my life. Have a beautiful lovely and blessed week.
I love the quiet hush of these pictures. I live in Michigan and it's beginning to snow again now. We are suppose to get snow, cold and blowing the next few days. I'm glad I get to stay indoors and watch it where it's warm. Have a Merry Christmas.
It was such a blessing to read Mrs. White's book. I couldn't put it down! Please, everyone, share about this lovely book. :)
Mrs. White, I am already subscribed to your blog and was happy to share this blog post on X (Twitter) and Facebook. May God bless you and your family richly.
I wish life were like this again. It’s time to get back to basics. I bet lots of people would agree! Wishing you and family a Peaceful and Glorious season. Best, Liz
Thank you for sharing this beautiful village in the snow. They remind me of the little Christmas village building collections. Hope you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas season.
I love these pictures! It makes me want to take a walk with you and see that village. My husband, son and myself are away from home ( also dealing with medical issues for our son) and feel like we're missing all the Christmas things we are used to. This post reminded me ,even in another state away from our family and home we can find joy in the season by focusing on HIM!

What lovely pictures! God doesn't just give us the water, He makes it beautiful to look at too. I personally prefer a simple life, but the world around us tries to make me think I should be frantically doing something else. I love reading your blog; it helps me to remember that the simple things are not just something to tolerate when we are down on our luck, they are actually a good thing.
We are just starting to get regular snow in my part of the upper Midwest. What beautiful pictures these are:). Tonight, I am testing a potato and leek casserole made with cream of celery soup. If it turns out, I think we’ll have it for Christmas:). Potatoes here are .99 for five pounds, so I can make a good sized dish for not much money:). Hope this post finds you and your family well!
Definitely a window into the past saved for the present so we can all breathe deeply and understand the value of simpler ways. Blessings, Mrs. White!
What a beautiful place! Thank you so much for sharing.
So pretty! That's what winter should look like!
Hugs

What a lovely place! I'd love to visit there someday. Thank you for the tour!
I was planning to leave a comment regardless of an incentive!😊
I must first make mention of your snowfall...God did not put me in an area of great snowfall, yet I do love snow.
The aesthetics of white on white in your photos is a wonderful sight to behold. Those pops of color from the windows and doors give rich definition also.
May you have know His blessings daily. I know you are going through some difficult times.
What beautiful photos! It must be such a lovely place to visit...any time of the year. We just got a dusting of snow here in Ohio. It made us a Winter Wonderland. But it won't last for long, we have warmer temperatures coming. We have medical problems going on in our family, too and this has made our Christmas season a bit different this year. Life is nothing but change, isn't it? But I know Our Lord never changes, what a comfort that is! My best wishes to all~
Dear Mrs. White,, I enjoyed your historic walk thru the beautiful village.. I have your books and I so enjoy your gently homemaking. Prayers for your son 's healing. Merry Christmas to all of you.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures! Your posts are always such an encouragement! And I love your books😊 roseyjayne@gmail.com
This is very lovely! It is very nice to see these in addition to the ones in the book. I loved reading it and this part was a real treasure!
What a lovely place! Thank you for the tour. A new post from you always brightens my day. It hasn't snowed yet in north Idaho, which is unusual. But I have been enjoying the fog and rain. Our Christmas plans are simple-time at church and with family-and I am so looking forward to a few peaceful weeks at home. Thank you for reminding us of the joys of simplicity, frugality, and a life lived by faith. Merry Christmas!
I agree, I wish we were in the times you spoke of, today. Thank you, for taking us a long. The photos are beautiful!

Awwww..... Mrs. White. Like walking through a Christmas card. I'm like a little girl when it comes to doing things like this, I too love the pops of red on white. ...Just beautiful. And I too was going to leave a comment regardless, I've been away from blogger lately as you know... I will put my name in the hat, the book sounds so nice not only for me but for our daughters as well.
God bless you Mrs. White, praying for you. I appreciate you very much. ~Amelia

I have a birthday this month as well as Christmas. We are going out to eat with my dad for that. I wish we got more snow down here in Arkansas. Especially for Christmas. That would be lovely.

This looks like a lovely little village to wander around --- thank you for taking us with you! I wonder if we will get some snow in NW Arkansas this year? Some years it's wonderful and some years it's meh, but this year has been so cold already that I've got high hopes! Much love to you, Mrs. White. Hope you enjoy a beautiful and restful Christmas

Calvin Coolidge is one of my most admired presidents. The story about how they had to find him in this very village to swear him in as President upon the death of President Warren Harding is very moving.
Thank you for these beautiful photos . They help me imagine that time.
I am subscribed here because of Luba and am so happy to read your entries of faith and joy in simple and eternal things.

Oh the memories those buildings must hold! What a sweet little village.
Your blog has been my favorite to visit for several years now. I have one of your books, and have wanted to purchase more. You are a blessing and encouragement to so many of us!

The village is so picturesque. I especially love the church. Thank you for sharing this beautiful place with us and for the giveaway! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and holiday coming up. I will be enjoying a new grand baby and my mom coming to visit for the first time in a year. Lots to be thankful for! Blessings to you and your family, Mrs. White!
I love looking at pictures of old places. Even ones that have not been kept up. There are a lot of old half fallen down houses and barns in Arkansas. Not always wise to get too close but lots of people like to go visit and take pictures. These days the pictures are easier for me.
And I just realized that if you have your profile set up, people can just click on that to get your email.
So pretty! We don't receive much snow where I live (the rainy Pacific NW). It's always a delight to me to get snow tho, but no one knows how to drive in it where I live. I always relished my children having snow days, then we started homeschooling and when it snowed, I still gave them a snow day (or at least a snow morning), but all that fluffy white stuff called to them and they could never concentrate on their school work. I sure miss those days of homeschooling. Wishing you a blessed Christmas celebration!
