Warning to Cars: Horse and Buggy on this Vermont Road. |
I was out for a ride, this weekend, with my daughter Amy and her children. We had a lovely time enjoying the scenery of our rural countryside. Nestled in a charming mountain road, there is a new Amish settlement not far from our Estate, here in Vermont. Each Saturday, they have a bake sale.
Bake Sale Sign at Amish Vermont Residence |
The wooden sign looks very sturdy. There are boards on both sides. They are painted white. It looks like the words are painted on, neatly, with black. From what I understand, they have a bake sale all season long, each Saturday, through October.
The sale area is in their front yard. They have a large table set up with all the items for sale. Above this is a simple canopy tent. Here you can find a delicious selection of baked goods, including: bread, rolls, peanut butter cookies, and the most delicious, fresh, large donuts you could ever find! They also have mason jars with apple butter, which tastes like apples and cinnamon and is wonderful for spreading on fresh bread or toast.
On the center of the table was a piece of notebook paper. On this was handwritten (in pen) all the baked goods available with a price beside each listing. It was humbly done and very sweet.
A small jar of Amish apple butter. |
I love how simple and plain the jar of apple butter is. There is a handwritten note, taped over the top of the jar. It says, "Apple butter $2.50."
On this particular day, as I was standing at the table, I noticed several young children playing nearby. They were so sweet and adorable. Their clothing appeared to be "Old Order Amish." There was also an 11 - month old baby sitting on the grass, being cared for by an older child. They all looked so happy and content.
I complimented them on their delicious donuts. I was told they are made by "grandmother." The landscape of the property and the outside of the home was lovely and pleasant. It was very well loved and cared for. Vising there made me want to go home, get out my cookbooks and start baking and cleaning!
As we drove away, I was able to get a discreet photograph of the canopy tent (the sale area) from a distance.

We will visit again!

We have a Amish community (and Mennonite) not far from us and they supply homemade/baked goods to the local stores, including Wegmans and Walmart. Thank you for sharing, Mrs. White, have a joyful day.
It sounds lovely. Thank-you for sharing it with us as well!
I would love to have visited the bake sale.
Mrs. White,
I have visited Vermont many, many times and didn't realize there was an Amish community there.
Growing up in New Jersey, I was very familiar with the Pennsylvania Dutch and always loved visiting that area and the simplicity of their lives.
Thank you for sharing the blessing of your visit to the Amish bake stand. It sounded absolutley lovely!
We too live very close to amish. Daily we see buggys and often barter and buy from them! It is always a blessing. My husband has given them rides to the hardware and I ask him to tell me every word they said to eachother so I can imagine what thier life is really like.(Smiles)
Such good prices on things too. Atleast where we are in Ohio!
P.S We have a few amish men working on a homestead two houses from us. We live in the country. I was hanging clothes on the line and I heard this booming male voice singing at the top of his lungs to discover it was the amish. For some reason this just made me laugh;) I couldn't make outthe tune!

Sounds lovely!
Greetings, I think many of us long for the calm and peaceful life they live. And they do seem so content. I can always just imagine what their meals consist of on any given day. Everything about them seems sturdy and like it will last. I loved reading this!
Love, Roxy
Lovely! I'll bet the baked goods were all delicious! Thanks for sharing.
Sounds tasty. I love homemade apple butter!
I love bake sales and the Amish always have such delicious baked goods. It all sounds yummy.

Oh this looks so sweet! I would love to learn more aboout Amish culture. I really should, there are many Amish communities near me here in Ontario!
P.S. Apple butter. YUM :O
I was just thinking about what a whirl of changes there is in our lives with the internet, cell phones, Facebook, etc. While it can be a blessing, I have to discipline myself to Turn Them Off!! Peace and quiet, without machines . . . the Amish know something about that. Blessings, Deborah
Dear Mrs. White,
A very nice outing you have had. The mention of apple butter makes me hungry and I will have to go to town tomorrow to purchase some for I am completely out.
Blessings,
d
Thanks so much for stopping by my new blog!!
We have an Amish Farmer who sets up several stands of produce, jams and baked goods every Friday in the Summer at the Mini Mart down the street. The banana bread that he sells is to die for!!!
Hugs,
Debbie
I am always a bit envious of the Amish and their ability to live slower, more old-fashioned lives. I'm quite sure their baked goods and canned goods are delicious.
Thank you for visiting my new blog and for commenting about my great-grandmother.
Blessings,
