Flooding in Vermont

View of the flooded playground on our property in Vermont.

We have had excessive rain and flood warnings in our state. There have been a couple of days when we were warned not to travel because of possible flash flooding of roads.

The other day, when I did my grocery shopping, the stores were running out of bread. I realized I already had flour, yeast, and other ingredients so I could make bread at home if necessary.

We are up North in Vermont so this area was not as heavily affected as other parts of the state, particularly our state capitol. But we did have some roads closed and even had government buildings close down and cancel appointments, one day last week, during the worst of the flooding.

Today it is affecting our property. It is raining heavily today and  is expected to continue into the night. Our playground is flooded. Our basement is flooding.

I was thinking about how I would normally be reading a book or enjoying the day in some sort of recreation. But instead, we are watching the property, digging trenches around the house, and finding solutions to keep the water from rising in the basement.  In the nearly 20 years we have lived here, this has never happened.

We walked down to the river to see if it was rising. It is high, but not nearly as high as it has been each spring when all the snow is melting.

The river bordering our property. It is higher than normal.

The flooding we are experiencing is from the excessive amounts of rainfall in a short period of time. It is affecting the grounds and our house.  We will continue to work hard at taking care of our humble estate. We will get through this difficult trial.

Yesterday I finished reading the book, "Pollyanna," by Eleanor H. Porter. The book was originally published in 1913.  The main character is a cheerful young girl who finds the bright side in all things. In every hardship she encounters, she finds something to be glad about.  Today, I am thankful that we still have a lovely view of the scenic landscape all around us. I am thankful for the quiet calmness of the rural village in which we live.

Most of all, I am thankful that no matter what we are going through, the dear Lord is walking with me.

Blessings

Mrs. White

Mrs. White,
Praying for your serenity, safety and for the mantle of the Blessed Mother to wrap your home and estate. Being in Louisiana, I have experienced flooding and the many feelings that come with being completely reliant on the Lord. May the Angels of God surround you.

I am so sorry about all the flooding in your state. It’s heartbreaking. I always loved Vermont and thought of it as a safe state weather-wise. I am in Florida and have to deal with the threat of hurricanes each year. My heart goes out to all of you. You are in my prayers today. Please continue to keep us updated.

That must be very worrying for you Mrs White. It is rare in Englad to find houses with basements, so we dont really have that problem, but I can imagine it must be difficult. I'm afraid this climate change is affecting the whole world. I do hope the water levels start to sink soon.
Pollyanna was a great favourite of mine as a child and I still have a set of four of the first books. They are delightful stories.

I thought of you first thing when I heard about all the flooding in the Northeast. Especially Vermont. I was happy to hear you says that the river was not overflowing. The ground gets so wet it just can't hold any more. I understand. I am in Florida and my "estate"out here in the country still has low spots from 5 years ago with Hurricane Michael. Our low spots are here to stay. Can't afford several loads of dirt nor the manpower to move the dirt to fill the low areas. We just have to be careful.
Stay safe, you are in my prayers.

Dear Mrs. White,

My heart goes out to everyone affected by this flooding. Where I live in Ohio, we have been blessed with all the bad weather going around us.

The last sentence of your post caught my eye and heart. Yes, no matter what we may be going through...our Lord is always right there with us. Amen to that!

Oh Mrs. White, I so know how you feel. We have had flooding problems in the past, having water in our home in the living area downstairs. It's horrible. I will lift you and your family up in prayers, this is not easy and many do not understand the trauma.

Yes, the dear Lord is with you! That is a beautiful reminder for us all.

Praying for you and I look forward to a good report in the situation soon.

Love, ~Amelia

Dear Mrs. White- we live in Connecticut and had the same storm as you had, which left us with 5 inches of water in our basement! We worked hard much of the morning to move things-our yard also was underwater. We now have fans and a dehumidifer running, and the basement is drying out nicely; it is a quiet and peaceful evening in our small town.
Thank you for the blessings of peace and contentment you share on your blog; I truly look forward to reading your posts! "The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy." Ps 147:11

We had severe flooding due to prolonged rainfall in winter last year in Australia, and it was devastating to much of the East Coast. I do understand how you are feeling. I will also be praying that the basement flooding stays where it is and stops rising and that you remain safe at home. God is with us always and is in utter control. He is our refuge, even when we do not understand what we are going through. Hello and I send my best wishes, Cate

How awful about the basement flooding! Please let us all know how you are faring and the eventual cleanup goes. I wondered if the flooding on the news had affected you and I'm sorry it has.

Praying for you during this time. I pray that the flooding will stop and the waters will go down. I pray that God will sustain you and give you the strength as you clean things up.

Mrs. White, praying for the safety of your estate and family. We have lived through flooding and you can't relax until it's finally over and then the work can begin. I hope you have minimal damage, and that the river stays calm and low. Stay safe and at peace.
