View of a rainbow from the balcony of my daughter's apartment, here in Vermont. |
Things are very quiet in our rural mountain village. The grounds of our property have dried out from recent flooding. The scenery is beautiful and peaceful. Yet, as I slowly drive down the driveway to do errands, I notice the large trench on the front grounds. I see the damage to the top of our driveway. There is a large hole where it joins with the street. I see all these little bits of damage, but the beauty around it comforts me with a sense that all is well. Repairs will happen as time and strength allow.
I have been busy indoors baking and cooking and enjoying visits from some of our grandchildren. I have been watching sermons on DVD and listening to the quiet sounds of hymns and gospel music from a CD player. My heart is nourished and quieted by the precious goodness of the dear Lord.
While there have been many trials, sometimes several a day, I am reminded of the example of my parents. Through all the difficulties they had to endure, they enjoyed each day. Their faith and strength came from the Lord. Mother would be talking on the phone, hearing about some upsetting problem regarding a grown child, and then she would give it to the Lord and go about her day. She and Dad enjoyed reading the Bible, going to church, and saying precious, old-time prayers. They would take rides in the country, go out for breakfast, and enjoy their lovely home. Through massive health difficulties or trials within the family, they were the kindest, sweetest people you could ever know. Their faith and trust in the Lord made them that way.
I love what Dr. Charles Stanley said in one of his sermons: "We don't look around. We look up." In moments of crisis, I must remember these words of wisdom.
I have two open Bibles in my room. One is open to the passage in Isaiah 26:3, which says, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." When I am about to panic over some trouble, or when I am filled with fear or dread, I go and read this verse directly from the Bible that I love so dearly. It is a promise that I claim. It soothes all my fears and worries. It is medicine to my ailing soul.
There is joy in our days when we have a quiet, grateful heart. We have to keep seeking joy as we seek peace and pursue it. We do this by focusing on that which is good and lovely. We focus on the Lord. We do not allow ourselves to dwell on the bad. That will take away our joy. When we walk towards the light, the light of goodness and holiness, the darkness goes away.
Today will be a glorious day of happiness. I will consider the positive things and enjoy the blessings. There is a sense of quiet and calm in my heart, just like this summer day in our rural Vermont village. Our humble estate is like a lighthouse of hope and help. To the best of my ability, I will serve the family and bring cheer to those around me.
Blessings
Mrs. White

It is always so uplifting to read your letters. I feel like we are personal friends. You are so encouraging no matter what you have gone through or are going through. Surely faith in God is a precious gift. Your parents sound wonderful. Such a blessing we have to have had Godly upbringing.
Thank you especially for sharing the Isaiah 26 scripture. Today I have had much worry on my mind, and it was a timely reminder of where my trust rests.
A lovely writing today, thank you.
Dear Mrs. White ~ This post with your uplifting scripture verse really encouraged me today. Dealing with some house issue of my own. Loved the rainbow picture. It is always a joy and makes me smile when I see a rainbow for real. A wonderful promise from God.
God's continued blessings on you ~ FlowerLady
It must be such a relief to see your property gradually returning to 'normal' though I'm sure it will take a while after such floods.
'A sense of quiet calm'.....such lovely words. Thank you.
I can feel the peace, just reading your words. I'm so thankful your land is drying up. I hope it continues to stay dry and that the repairs will come easier than expected. Have a beautiful week!
I am glad your floods have subsided and that though there is damage, it is at least "manageable." Your perspective from a place of peace and calm in the soul is encouraging. My morning message (as I call them) this morning was that God is in control. It was such a worthy reminder. May you be blessed 💕
I love your thoughts here, I do understand your mixed feelings but thankfulness too. I loved reading about your parents, that is so sweet, them living out a simple gospel. Very inspiring, God is so faithful, we need to always remember that. What a Friend we have in Jesus...What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.
The rainbow is a beautiful reminder, thank you for sharing today.
Love, Amelia
This blog post was lovely and uplifting, I often come to your blog several times a week; if there are no new posts, I happily read through older ones. It’s a break for me, and helps lift my mind and heart to what is good, true and lovely. I enjoyed hearing about your parents and took inspiration from how you are handling your own hard times. Thank you for taking the time to put your thoughts out into the world-they are a great help to me and I’m sure many others. I just want to you to know how much “visiting” here with you has made a positive impact on so many areas of my life throughout the years. We may have never met but I see you as a kind of mentor to me in homemaking and mothering, and I am very grateful.
What a beautiful, inspiring post, and such a lovely tribute to your parents. That kind of legacy is the kind I want to leave to my children and grandchildren. Vermont is one of the few states I have never visited. Your lovely photos make me wish I had.
Blessings to you!!
Hello Mrs. White. Thank you for sharing the scripture. I read and reread it and know I will return to it often. I am always thankful for your thoughts on life, faith, family, and homemaking. I am so glad your land is drying up, and pray it stays that way.
Reading your post this morning was a balm for my soul, Mrs. White. Thank you. I'm so happy to hear that things are drying out on your property! Hearing about your mother and father was beautiful. Thank you for sharing about their faith and yours.
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
Thank you for this scripture- my mind is not at peace right now so I will try to focus on this promise.
Catching up after our trip to Tucson, AZ. God was so gracious to let us take the trip and my dearest was strong enough to travel. I took keep special verses in my "Treasure Chest" verses on 3x5 cards that I refer to often each day. Only God's Word is the comfort and direction we need each day though those daily trials.
Love your post, love your love for the Lord and your sharing that with us.
I never fail to feel stronger when I read your posts. I can do what God has called me to do... serve my husband and my adult children when they need me, and pray for them all. This week, I'll add another calling... grandmother!
God bless you dearie! Hoping you have a lovely summer!
