A Full Time Grandmother

A comforting painting in one of our rooms.

The grandchildren have been actively busy outside this winter. There are also cozy days indoors, and stormy days when they must stay inside. These are the hours of hot chocolate, home-baked treats, art projects, and reading lots of books.  On sunny days, they are ice staking, skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. There is always some adventure happening that gives them cheer and builds wonderful memories of their childhoods.

When they visit me, I offer them puzzles, drawing paper, books, and games. I have maps, history books, Bibles, and Hymn books. We enjoy studying it all and have a lovely time talking about history and the blessing of being God's children. We often set up the card table so we can gather around for boggle, monopoly, or bingo. A highchair is pulled up to the table so the littlest child can join in our fun.

The children help me with housework. We go along a common routine of the day, times for snacks, meals, and cleaning. Someone does the sweeping. Another will set the table.  One will pour the milk and help serve the food. . . And always, there is someone chosen to ring the little dinner bell, so everyone knows to come running to the table.

I want to always be here for this. I do not want to miss a single minute, hour, or day of being a mother and grandmother.  Many years ago, the name of housewife started to change to being a full-time mother or a stay-at-home mother. This seemed to imply that it would not last. As if it was a temporary plan until the children were older. It doesn't have to be this way. One can choose to remain a housewife or a full-time mother. Eventually this will turn into the title of being a beloved full-time grandmother, one who is always here for the children, grandchildren, and family.

There will always be some call or opportunity to do other things, to get a job or to join clubs and organizations. There will always be some opening outside the home for mothers and grandmothers. As for me, all I have ever aspired to be is simply a housewife, a housewife for life. May it always be so.

Blessings

Mrs. White

I love being a mom and a grandmother, Mrs. White. I just wish my daughter and SIL didn't live so far away. We're hoping to see them the last week in May or in early June. Blessings and enjoy your grandchildren!

You are very fortunate to have your family nearby. Four of my 5 grandchildren are 5 1/2 hours away and one is in southern Georgia, which is very far from Minnesota! They are all in their teens and 20's now and grandma doesn't play much of a big role in their life at this point. But fortunately modern technology allows me to video chat with them on my computer!

What a lovely tribute to us mothers and grandmothers! I am much like you in regards to being at home and available to my children and 13 grandchildren. They keep us on the move:) They are the joy of our lives, yes, LOTS of work, but its such a short window of time we can help build and support them before they're grown up. Blessings to you Mrs. White!

I LOVE being a full-time grandma and available to my grandchildren whenever they need me. I also love passing down my faith to them as you do. There’s nothing more important that we could be doing!

What lovely memories you are making with your grandchildren. I am starting to think that I may never get the chance to be a grandma. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't I am still blessed to be a mother.

You are choosing the very best things in life. I have been blessed to be a stay at home mama for my sixteen kids, now there are only two left at home, but we have 19 grandchildren...the oldest of them is 12, the rest are all 8 years old and under! 18 grandkids 8 and under...it's crazy! But amazing, I'm so glad I don't work! They come visit me often!

I’m so glad you have time to enjoy with your children. I know you already know this from raising your own children but childhood goes so fast! It can be hard but it’s the best time ever ❤️

It is such a special time with grandchildren I hope the years I have spent with mine will linger in their memories. My Grandma was a very lovely lady who meant so much to me, as I'm sure you do to your grandchildren.

Mrs. White, this is where my heart has always been, as well. It hurt me to go to work after 33 years at home. I'm so thankful I got to come back home and resume my title as a housewife, full-time. God is providing, as he always has. Being available for my kids and grandkids is the best job ever.
