Taking Care of Our Medical Patient

Late summer view of the lake at one of the parks near our home in Vermont.

This has been such a busy year for hospital and doctor visits.  We reached a crisis in the early months with our medical patient (one of our grown sons).  Trips to the hospital and to see specialists were happening nearly every week. A new treatment plan was put into place and things began to stabilize. Now we have a little more news to share.

We had been taking him to a local facility for his ongoing treatment. The patient was feeling much better than he has in a long time.  We had a few hospital trips in the next state during the end of summer.  When we take these trips we have to stay at a hotel near the hospital. The journey is too long for the patient to endure as a day trip.  During our recent trips, I asked if he felt well enough to stop at a few scenic stops along the way.  It was very difficult for him, but we packed food from home and made sure there were places to stop and rest.

We went on walks in parks and at museum sites. We took a little detour and saw covered bridges. We even walked through one and just enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

We walked through this covered bridge here in Vermont.

We enjoyed a scenic rest on each of our trips.  On one of them we took a brief hike at one of the visitor's centers to see the scenery.  The fresh air and the beauty of the day brought cheer for him. It gave him such a boost! He had a more positive outlook.  He wanted to try to do more things.

Recently he started to have difficulties with his health. There were moments (for me) of panic and fear. He was exhausted and losing weight. It has been a struggle for him to keep weight on since he became ill (during the end of the year in 2020). This was frightening.  We kept in touch with his nurses and doctors and he continues to see them regularly. We know all will be okay. The Lord is walking through this right along with us. We will remain strong and trust our Heavenly Father.

There have been a few new medical trips scheduled for him, including a difficult procedure. Our first trip is coming up next week. These are not fun!  It will be very hard for him to get through these necessary procedures. I try to do what I can to make these trips cheerful while filling the time (when we are not at the hospital) with happy things.

On one of our recent trips I got a picture of him in the elevator of our hotel. He is standing beside our luggage cart. He gave me permission to share this with you.

Our medical patient (one of our sons).

On this upcoming trip (in a different state) a specialist is going to work with him on helping to stabilize his weight. A few weeks after that, we will head back to the hospital for a painful procedure. It will take him some time to recover. Then a short time later, we will go back to the hospital to see his main doctor again.

We would greatly appreciate your prayers for peace, healing, rest, and provision to meet the cost of these trips. We are grateful for your help!

I have great compassion for the season you are in right now. Our family has been on many of these long time, healing journeys. Some have been pretty scary! All have required our faith and trust in Jesus, and all the strength and wisdom He provides. I pray that when all is done, that your very handsome son is well and whole again.

What a frightening time you have had. Your son looks such a nice young man and it's hard to think that he is going through so much pain. I'm glad he enjoyed some of the trips.
Mrs White, may I ask if you are going to put a Just fund me site to help with the cost of the trips?

Mrs. White, thank you for sharing the picture of your son and the beautiful scenery you were able to enjoy together. I will be praying for him and God's peace and presence over him for this next season of appointments. I pray that God will provide for all of your needs and that on each trip you will find something joyful to add to your trip.

Thank you for your update on your son, Mrs. White. It helps us to know how to pray - for safety for all your trips, for improved health for him, and for wisdom for the doctors.

While Mrs. White has set up a campaign, let's do what we can to support her as an author as well. Winter is a time of extra expenses in homes. Here are some ideas:
1. Ask for her books for Christmas/birthday presents if you do not have them yet.
2. Give her books as gifts to others. The Elizabeth Prentiss books which she has republished would make excellent gifts for anyone, not just homemakers.
3. Share her blog posts and books on social media!
