There have been times I wanted to rest all day and do
nothing. Those days leave me feeling guilty, bored and ill. There is a reason we need to work. We need to
deserve our rest. We need to earn it.
Imagine treating homemaking as a beautiful art project. We are busy for most of the day, creating a delightful, inviting home. Perhaps we are outdoors hanging clothes on the line and then we work in the garden. We may gather fresh fruit and freshly cut flowers and bring these into the home to brighten and cheer our families.
Perhaps we are busy repainting an old chair on the front porch. Maybe we sweep and dust and polish the bedrooms. Next, we may open windows to let in all the fresh air. And maybe this was all done just after sun-up!
Now we have an entire day to enjoy! We deserve a break! It is time to sit in the parlour and sip on lemonade. It is time to enjoy a book or a little hand embroidery while visiting with family and guests.
After this time of refreshment, we are back to our project -
the making and keeping of home. We are content and happy with our work. We begin preparing a special lunch. Our mood is calm. We are not in a state of hurry or stress. We have paced ourselves and accomplished lovely things. But we also indulged in a peaceful time of rest!
Next, the family gathers at home with all their news and excitement of the day. We have a wonderful supper ready. We have spent time reading the Bible and listening to gospel music while we worked. We are ready for the
night hour. This is a peaceful time. We tidy the kitchen by candlelight and listen to soothing classical music. We are dressed in our finest apron and present ourselves as a vision of meekness and beauty.
The Home is clean. The family is rested. It is time to for family prayers and thanksgiving. It is time to shut off the lights, close the curtains and enjoy the coziness of a happy home.
May it be so.
Blessings
